From Seth MacFarlane and Director Jon Favreau comes the all-new FOX series, THE ORVILLE.

Premiers September 10th.

I really want to like this, but the jokes in the trailer seem kind of lazy and phoned in McFarlane schtick.

Worse it's another high concept show on Fox. I'll give Fox credit for coming up with these shows every year but they never go well and usually join the pile of other weird sitcom ideas in the cancelation bucket.

Seth is a big Star Trek fan. I bet we get some good cheeky references. Plus I bet there will be a few Cameos too. I'd be surprised if Patrick Stewart doesn't make an appearance or two. All in all, this looks better than the new Star Trek Discovery.

It's to be expected, since he's already voicing Avery Bullock on "American Dad" for MacFarlane.

I usually am not fond of MacFarlane "in the flesh" for reasons I've not been able to pin down. I'm not getting the same vibe here though. Looking forward to it. Big fan of Adrianne Palicki, and Favreau being on board is a good sign.

Since I'm only going to see one episode of ST: Discovery and have no intention of giving CBS another dime for their streaming, steaming money-sucking scheme, this will have to do for me. Besides, I kinda' like Seth. Don't hate me.

I'm in!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this... Star Trek Discovery? Not so much... Also, Orville is going to be on a channel I can actually watch without having to subscribe to yet another service!

I want to like this....I will give it a shot....but I was disappointed that I did not laugh a single time watching the trailer(s).

Loved Galaxy Quest....hoping they can capture some of its magic.

I've watched the first three episodes (no, you won't find them on the internet, at least your aren't supposed to) and Patrick Stewart isn't in the first three. No cameos that I spotted either. Oh wait, Penny Johnson Jerald was on DS9. I placed her on Castle. But, 10 Forward makes a look-alike appearance. The bridge has a familiar look as well. I've not seen the trailers.

Brannon Braga is part of the production and directs.

Before I watched, I really wasn't expecting much. I'm not a real Seth M. fan. But, I actually liked the show and even laughed several times. That said, they are really heavy handed with the 3rd episode. I will not give any spoilers.

I hadn't seen the posted Con trailer- looks better all the time.

By your 3rd episode description, it sounds like they are trying for a Galaxy Quest/MASH vibe- a Trek-homage dramedy, which Quest pulled off perfectly.

I did not laugh much in Galaxy Quest, as it was the best Trek homage to date and obviously based on humor but not a "comedy" per se. A tribute more than a parody, with a comedic core, and takes itself seriously otherwise- a challenge to pull off by most directors/actors.

It appears The Orville (and QC before it) will be majority Trouble With Tribbles/I Mudd territory, with a serious situations/plots/concepts thrown in. Again, think MASH in Trek clothing.

My hopes for this dropped dramatically when I found out the show was trying to fill an hour. At thirty minutes a Trek parody would struggle to maintain the gimmick and the television trash can is full of high-concept gimmick shows that couldn't sustain a thirty minute slot further than the pilot.

Of the three episodes that I've seen, there is no way this show could be done as a weekly 1/2 hr (OK, ~23 min) series. It really works at 43 min.

Were you part of a local test/focus group audience?

How were you selected?

Looking more and more like Orville is a straight up TNG clone, coupled with the hour format (TNG's ~43 minutes)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/danidip...comfort/print/

with Spock/McCoy and Tribbles/I Mudd humor perhaps at a higher ratio than normal Trek.

He won a trivia contest where he correctly answered whether each and every Star Trek episode was "taped" or "filmed."

That would have been easy, since no ST episode was ever "taped."

I taped plenty of episodes. Not all of them though because they took up a lot of shelf space.

I had to save some space for the DVD films.

I thought that at least the FX elements of TNG/DS9/VOY were shot on video, which is why they had to re-do the FX from scratch or a TNG BluRay release.

TNG clone too close for comfort?
http://ew.com/tv/2017/08/08/star-trek-orville/

Gotta love dat CEO-speak:

Quote:
So a critic asked Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden: Aren’t you worried about being sued? Especially since CBS Television Studios, which owns the TV rights to Trek, is about to launch its own Star Trek revival this fall, Star Trek: Discovery.

At first, Walden made a joke about wishing somebody else on the panel (like Fox entertainment president David Madden) would answer the question on her behalf, but he didn’t. So she plowed ahead: “We’re not really concerned,” she said. “We obviously have a big legal team. We vet things, so it’s not like we’re just flying by the seat of our pants out here. Seth’s intention is to do something that clearly pays homage to Star Trek, that clearly was inspired a lot by Star Trek.
Of course, when a CEO (or $President/Trump) makes affirmative statements, it usually means the OPPOSITE is the case.

Translation:

Yes, FOX is worried about getting sued, they ARE concerned, the FOX legal team is not big enough and/or funded well enough, they didn't vet Orville well enough beforehand, they ARE flying by the seat of their pants on this one, and Orville is a TNG ripoff/IP theft vs a parody/homage

Principle photography was film. Editing was done via computer editing bays (film transfered to 720x480i video). FX was done via computer, no shooting involved. And before you say anything, the shots of the Enterprise and any models were done on film.

Because they had to redo all of the FX for ST:TNG and because not enough people bought the Blu-rays, it was not cost effective to do STS9 or ST:VOY. No real ROI. Unfortunate.
