I just got back from my local Sears store on Long Island. I too was disappointed. First off there were only about 4 channels we were able to access. When we selected several different movie channels, the programming went back to the same demo channel. This happened for about 10 other channels we selected. The salesguy said there was a problem with the dish installation but I indicated this appears to be a more than an isolated problem.

PQ appeared very good on the two demo channels (mostly studio feeds) we were able to tune. However, there was a soccer game that was very poor and loaded with artifacts. These didn't appear to be typical motion artifacts that we've grown accustomed to with MPEG2, but rather something different.

The other issue I noticed was VERY slow tuning. The picture would appear slowly almost as if being displayed via a slow dial-up modem. OUCH! This happened repeatedly. So we've got quite a few problems that need to be sorted out before any final judgement can be made. However, thus far, it doesn't appear that Dish or D* need to run for cover. Time will tell.

Has anyone tried the VOOM angle on a credit for a new HD receiver? My HD300 will be arriving soon and I want to properly prepare my chops before I call D* and remind them what I loyal customer I have been since my original Memorex:cool: SD box back in the dark beginning.

TIA

The VOOM system is more expensive than the HD300! Little bargaining power available on this one!

All I can say is make sure you go SEE voom before you make that decision. If I was E* or DirecTV (Man I hate the D* thing) I would laugh right now if someone was threatening to leave them for voom.

Thats exactly what I was talking about in my post yesterday. I dont' know what it is, but it looked kind of like EE. Thats the best way I could describe it. IT wasn't directly on the players (at least it didn't appear to be), but all around them.

The website appears to have a self install option (order over internet).
Anyone tried that ?

I called to ask about a self-install and the rep said no - it must be "professionally installed." Where did you see that on the site?

FWIW, I am running a coax from the dish location to the area behind my HDTV before the installer comes so all he has to do is mount the dish (maybe he'll let me do it while he watches so he doesn't screw up my house).

Do we know which bird VOOM is on so I can determine the best mounting location?

Has it occurred to anyone that the Sears STB's might have a special software to prevent certain channels from being selected in the stores? And maybe that's why it's so buggy?

It strikes me as nothing less than ludicrous to read all these brilliant comments, when no one has actually had one of these in their home to see how it really works.

On Thursday, I checked out the display in the St. Petersburg, Florida store. The receiver was connected to a Mitsubishi monitor that needed convergence badly. Anyway, the receiver was set to output 480p. The red RESET button fixed that. There were only 7 channels enabled. There are bugs. The box locked-up several times. No program audio is output. Sometimes, I had to cycle power to get it to display program video.

I discovered the hidden "System Configuration" menu that contains manual tuning, AV testing, etc. From the System Settings menu, select #8 "Installation Settings", then enter 988. To get to the System Settings menu, hit the big VOOM button, then the green button, then select it from the "Options & Settings" menu.

Guess I'll wait until they work out the bugs. The receiver in the store had a satellite received signal strength of 26 out of 100.

Have fun.

Humor me - how did you "discover" this? It isn't exactly a pattern that one would randomly try!

Tell me, have you ever played a video game, HofstraJet? You can discover all kinds of things through a systematic pushing of buttons. It was there before, but the advent of Mortal Kombat really accellerated the trend towards secret button presses. At least as far as I know it. Anyways, all kinds of electronics, especially relatively powerful consumer electronics that requires an OS and capable of doing things that the seller doesn't want it to do have these leeeetle games where you press buttons to reach some secret inner game. ?;~). DVD players are the most notorious cases, and tivos also have hacks involving pressing buttons.

I also stopped at 2 Sears stores yesterday to preview the service (NW plaza and Chesterfield mall in the St. Louis area), and the results were much like others have reported here. Very few actual channels would come in. The thing that bothers me the most, though, is that none of the local channels came in at either store. Did the installer forget the OTA antenna, or was something just set up wrong? I hope this is not an indication of standard installation practice.

In my opinion, the broadcast channels will help Sears actually sell some HD televisions (and Voom service). Put up CSI or ER on the big screen, with the standard (cropped) feed of the same show on that wall of small sets they have, and Joe consumer can really see the benefit of HDTV.

As usual, I knew more about the Voom service than the 2 dweebs at the local Sears. They at least had a display up but no service. The box locked up trying to navigate the menus that were showing!. The dweebs said that they tried to contact Voom themselves for an install but got hung up on by Voom!!!!

Get this, the demo showing was from a DVD run through a Samsung HD931 DVD player! At least these guys knew it could upconvert to 720p via DVI.
The dweebs even admitted that what they know about Voom was from the DVD demo loop AND a 10 MINUTE IN SERVICE!

The remote looked like it came from a Clown branded TV! Lots of perty colors!

So far a waste of time. It does have potential. The brochure available stated that the 28 channels are available but the web site states only 23 incl. the 21 Voom channels & DiscoveryHD & an Intro Voom are available now. The rest later (after 2/1/04).

Thus there are NO add on packages now.

I am still tempted to sign up for the 23 channels. However, once I get a Dish 921, I would not need any addon channels with Voom due to the Dish HD pack & HD DVR!! It would be worth it IF the 21 exclusive had decent content.

I would sign up today IF they had a way to credit all of us who bothered to get OTA antennas installed. Where I live, it is tricky (65 miles from towers) . I would be glad to recoup ~$300 already spent. I certainly do not want them screwing it up!! I think that I will just be patient to see how real installs go for forum readers.

Any thoughts on if the Dolan/Cablevision connection might mean HD Islanders/Rangers hockey on Voom? That in and of itself would be worth the plunge for me...

Darius,

I understand your point. The sequence you provide just seems a tad more complex than Tivo-2 and not something one would try within a short time at an in-store display. I think it's great that you found it - don't get me wrong, I just find it amusing. That's all. :)

VOOM's website has now updated their Plus-Pack section to include the Starz and Showtime packages (added to original offering offerings of the Tennis Channel and DiscoveryHD), and their cable favorite's section now includes 34 channels.

HofstraJet,

Actually, I can't take credit for discovering it. While the salesman was on the phone with VOOM tech support, I jotted a few notes in my PDA after he entered the hidden menu.

The dialogs have the same appearance as my 4DTV c-band digital receiver and there are hidden menus on the 4DTV that are well-known.

VOOM is pretty cool. I hope the work the bugs out soon. Looks like they rushed it to market.

Not sure I follow you. Unless I have had more to drink that I realize, the difference between the two is around $100. To me that is the same difference and it should be to them also if I am considering changing trains.

OK, my hopes are remain high, but why waste precios bandwidth on Showtime East SD. In an HD focused service, the redundancy is unnecessary, unlike East & West HD feeds which DO make sense until PVR options are available.

I think most of the comments stem from the fact that this is mass market master Sears we're dealing with - along with clueless people who know nothing about the new product they're selling. Whether that's Sears' fault or (more likely) Voom not getting the correct info out and giving the people at Sears at least a little training/background... it's worth commenting on.

In other words, would you expect consumers (especially this group) to buy a seemingly crappy system just on the off chance it might be OK in your home?

part of the install includes a local antenna so as long as you are within range of the OTA towers you are good.
