If the signal is originating in NY, then WHY IS WWOR-DT SHOWING ENTERPRISE IN CRAPPY MPEG-1 looking SD? Dammit. This is one of the networks we actually get in NY.....
DaveFi's Avatar DaveFi 06:16 PM 10-15-2003
Enterprise looks awesome in HD, but I wish it made the writing better...

Uh- wait I take that back- Is it an upconvert? Could be...

NOT FAIR :(

Anyone in Chicago getting it in HD? I'm not. Same image as usual. I missed the first few minutes, so I didn't see if they had a Zenith logo anywhere.

Detroit UPN is HD & DD 2.0. Looks very good.

Finally a clean picture of Star Trek, but my signal from UPN 50 is the weakest of all the stations in Detroit and breaks up constantly. Is it my reception problem or are others in the Detroit getting a weak signal from UPN 50?
balazer's Avatar balazer 06:26 PM 10-15-2003
WKBD-DT has always been kind of weak for me, but I get it with near zero errors.

klang.... All is A-OK in Houston tonight, way cool stuff.......

mmost.... ODD the CGI stuff looks good and the real film parts seems soft? who knows? I was just really pleased to see the HDTV banner come up as the picture snapped to 16X9.

Take care.... watch....record.... and mostly enjoy some HDTV tonight of YOUR choice as there is really almost too much to try and watch these days, maybe a third firewire receiver / 30k is in order..... ROFLOL ;-)

P.S. A big tip of the "HDNet CAP" to the fellow in Dallas who broke the NEWS about UPN starting tonight!

HD in south Florida (Plam Beach). Not the greatest picture, but I'm not complaining. MUCH better the before. :D

I actually composed this post in response to a Detroit problem report in the other thread but it was closed before I hit Submit ....

The reception has been perfect for me so far here in Ferndale. The picture looks good though sometimes it has sort of a very slight matte finish over it that does not move with the image.

But I am extremely pleased with all this so far.

It looks very soft- it could be a 480p upconvert to 1080i.
Ken H's Avatar Ken H 06:43 PM 10-15-2003
UPN in Detroit always is my strongest station, I'm Southwest of the tower about 20 miles. I can even pick it up when my antenna is oriented to the South for Toledo.

Agreed. The space/CGI shots look good. Even the UPN logo seems to clear up during them. The live shots still look soft.
trbarry's Avatar trbarry 06:47 PM 10-15-2003
The CGI shots look good but have a little bit of aliasing typical of upscaling with some algorithm. You can see it wiggle a bit along the edges.

Source signal from network is 1920 x 1080. Possible some stations are not set up properly or whatever.. maybe downconversion.

Not sure if the network itself is upconverting the source material to 1080i though.

Looks great here. I'm interested to see how it will look from local LA affil (KCOP-DT) later.
sunnycrest's Avatar sunnycrest 06:58 PM 10-15-2003
Ken, thanks for the signal report on WKBD-DT. I'm northeast of the tower. Guess it's my problem so I have to return to the antenna orientation issues I thought I had cured. If Comcast adds WKBD digital, I may pop to HD cable. Without CBS, it didn't seem worth it.

I am a happy camper. :)

But it was so much like Beauty & the Beast that I kept expecting singing tea cups.

Until the leaves are offf the trees I will have constant breakups of the picture on UPN-57 in Philly. They are at fairly low power. When I could see it, the picture looked soft. Two more weeks and I will have a better view of the picture. Did look much better than the cable picture though.

I didn't see a New England post, so had to add that WSBK-DT 38-1 in Boston came through in high def. "Enterprise" looked like 480p on my Pioneer Elite 710 and Samsung HD receiver, but I appreciated the widescreen picture.

We usually DirecTiVo the episode and my wife and I watch it together when she gets home. She's gonna be peeved when I tell her I watched it in high def! Nobody tell her, OK?

KBHK San Francisco back on the air along with all the other digital channels on Sutro, but as of now it's still SD. Here's hoping that will change at 8pm. At least I've found a place for my antenna that gives me a solid lock (first time I've felt motivated to find one :)).

I saw the beginning of the show and yes, they did broadcast the Zenith logo at the beginning. (It looked identical to the one CBS uses to announce their HD programming.) I guess I'm not too surprised that Fox, here in Chicago, who now owns WPWR, isn't ready yet to broadcast native HD programming. I wonder if their plant is even capable of passing 1080i signals?
