It was an upconvert unless they got an HD transfer, which seems unlikely. Check out their schedule:

Spotted "Contact" in OAR on HBO yesterday while flipping around between playoff games.
That's the second one I've seen on HBO this weekend. First one was "Oceans Twelve".
Could they finally be getting the message? I'm trying not to get my hopes too high.

Weird thing about Contact was, TitanTV didn't have it as HD but HBO's program guide said TrueHD...After seeing the Bridge Jones up-convert, I can no longer say for sure which movies aren't HD....Contact did look pretty damn good though...much better than the DVD

I don't have the DVD, but if you thought the pq was much better than the DVD, then it was "TrueHD".

Not to question what you saw, but I saw the same transfer and found it to be extremely soft and not even close to being a good upconvert.

Contact (1997) is no surprise cuz it is pre-1999 HBO cropping policy but isn't this really big news about Oceans 12 showing OAR? Is this the first non-Lions Gate 2:35 film to be shown OAR on HBO since 1999?

For Richer or Poorer(Tim Allen) movie is showing 2.35 OAR right now on Uni-HD.

So far Uni-Hd has been VERY consistent with their OAR this year(minus TV shows of course).

Anyone know why Ocean's Twelve is OAR on HBO-HD?

I'm incredibly grateful (it actually made me watch what IMHO is otherwise a horrible piece of cr*p), but it's also obviously not an old "pre-crop" transfer.

Do the filmmakers just have enough clout on this one to insist it be shown OAR on HBO (sort of like how back in the day before letterboxing was prevalent Woody Allen was able to insist his new films be released on video only in letterbox format?)

because It debuted on cinemax 3 months ago OAR, and since Max/HBO are the same company they *almost* allways get the same movies.

... and 5.1 to boot.

Overall a pretty decent transfer. There is more grain than you see with a recent release and the blacks are a little murky, but a huge improvement over the soft, butchered pan & scan version show previously on Showtime.

This film makes a compelling case for why OAR is preferable.

too bad it's not listed as playing again in the next month or so...did they wait until the last time they were going to air it to fix the problem?

Miss Congeniality 2 on HBOHD is cropped and zoomed but when the credits roll at the end it went OAR.

Let's make a deal.

Opening and Closing Credits in OAR does not make a movie OAR for this section.....it must be OAR for the ENTIRE movie, however, if you care to start an Opening and Closing Credits in OAR thread.......

Just making a point how stupid it was for HBO to do that.

It happens. I guess the producers want to make sure their names don't get cut off. Daredevil had credits OAR and then swithed to open matte.

That's typical -- most cropped movies have their end credits shown OAR, and many also have their opening credits in OAR as well -- to make sure none of the names get cut off!
