Question about OAR movies. Since I have a 16:9 screen, if an HD movie is shown as OAR, do I notice a difference compared to a a standard HD program, since both will fill my screen?

It depends on what the OAR is. Typical aspect ratios are 4:3 (standard television, films made before the 50's), 1.66:1 (European matted widescreen), 1.85:1 (American matted widescreen), 2.2:1 (70mm) and 2.35:1 (anamorphic widescreen, Super35 widescreen). 1.85:1 and probably 1.66:1 (can't say I've ever seen an example of this) would be slightly cropped to fill the 16:9 screen (16:9 translates to 1.78:1). This cropping is pretty minimal and wouldn't bother most people. Wider formats would need to have black bars on the tops and bottoms to be presented in it's OAR, and narrower formats would need to have black bars on the sides to be shown in it's OAR.

If you want to know what the OAR of a film is, check out the technical specs on IMDB.com.

I looked it up in IMDB. Cabin Fever is a "new release" (2002). Lions Gate is the U.S. distributor.

Yo, FanAtic, I'll echo Darrin... which channel?

If Cinemax, that would be very interesting, because both times previously that it aired on HBO, it was 1.78. Unfortunately, I see only a single airing left, Saturday morning at 9:30am.

Odd, because Cabin Fever has been on HBO before Cropped.

I think this is the first occurance where a movie has showed up cropped on HBO first, then Cinemax OAR later. Ususally it's the other way around.

XBOX Live: Wagmman

BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.

Thanks. Those shots did look very clean.

P.S. Dave, no, not MAX, though it is airing there this month too (and coming around again in March on HBO). It was MC-HD, presumably on BEV.

Since it has an ABC-HD logo on on the bottom of the webpage you posted, what do you think?

Typiclally either Womble MPEG-VCR as a .bmp and then convert it to .png or .jpg with Photoshop or just a straight VLC capture.

Even if they crop it, shouldn't be that big of a big deal, since Castaway was shot in 1.85:1. You'd lose... .07 of the width. It's a 52px crop on the width of a 720p picture (I know that calculation doesn't really make sense). Now, Forrest Gump the Saturday after is a different story if it gets cropped.

1.85:1 films just have the mattes moved out a bit to fit 1.78:1, which means no cropping. Just a tad extra info.

Correct.

Concerning Forrest Gump, ABC HAS shown it OAR at least twice before. I doubt they will obtain a new cropped transfer.

Yes, but unfortunately, it's widescreen SD, same as the last time it aired. And the 5.1 is not "real" -- it's derived from 2-channel Pro-Logic. Oh, and it's time-compressed as well ...
