Got some straight forward answers on D* HD/ED. At least what they hope to do:

With the new sat in March (Service start April/May):

Starz HD (W/Starz sub) - By year end 2003.
Cinemax HD (W/Cinemax sub)
A&E HD (Basic HD Pack)
Bravo HD (Basic HD Pack)
Fox Sports HD (Basic HD)

Four (4) others: Sports Subscription/Special Events (Olympics/NFL ST/MLB/NHL)-PPV when not in use.

Addition of Fox Digital Sports East, West, Central in 480p (WS) - In conjunction with Baseball Season.

HD TiVo from Samsung and Hughes March 1. Samsung $899, Hughes $699 (Lower recording limits).

Other info:

1. Recent reports of picture quality improvements are a result of channel re-allocation and testing of new equipment.
2. As many as 160 local channels to be re-assigned when new sat goes up improving PQ substantially.
3. D* has more new equipment coming in (some being tested) that offers improved PQ using current compression methods.
4. Ref item 3 - Your STB has been updated to support new equipment at D*.

Got this from D* after ripping their ass on my SIR-T160 locking up after not being used for 4 months due to a move. It wouldn't do crap for me. Works fine now and my locals never looked so good. They were crap when I suspended service in August.

interesting information. I just went with Cable after years of D* because it was no upfront cost. The main reason I did that is to wait for the HD material to get out there more and see what service I want to use. I have all ideas I will go back w/ D* in the next year or so if what they say holds true. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info. I am dying for this channel. I just hope Directv gets it soon. I might have to switch to Dish to get this channel if Directv doesnt get it soon.

A&E HD (I didn't know it even exsisted) would be awesome. It would worth the price of the HD tier alone. I wish Brovo HD would mirror the cool poker show like the real bravo.

Thanks for the update.

Except for the "picture format" control, it looks exactly the the SD DirecTiVo. That'll be confusing if you have two in the rack and less knowledgable users.

You mean end of 2004? End of 2003 is 15 days away.

So DirecTv is going to once again be a full year behind the competition. That is amazing. Or is it?

No, he means end of 2003. I've already heard about Starz being available at the end of 2003.

Let's face it, Directv understands the competitive pressures and is responding big time. This is huge news. If they come through with this, they will be atop the heap, yet again.

This is a great report if all true.

The HD package would be more compelling by far with those additional channels. An HD Tivo that is only $700 is great news.

I hope it's all true!

Mark

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working. (Oh, and plasma didn't die because of logistics problems, nor does OLED ship in big boxes because it comes from Korea.)

WOW! skyboss, you got somebody at D* with an awful lot of info that probably is not yet meant for public distribution. Great job, always nice having a mole at our service! But then again maybe this is a trial balloon.;)

I think I heard 90 days.

Are directivos "upgradable" (i.e. can you replace the harddrive with a larger one or add a second to the first)? If so, is there any speculation that the HD versions will be?

What about the comments about reallocating bandwith on the Direcway satts for HD? This was a big rumor that then seem confirmed, but now seems silent. Apparently, the pitch was that Direcway satts were not competitive with other high speed internet options, so D* was going to reallocate significant bandwith on those satts (already in orbit) for more channels (HD & Locals). Apparently, a representive of D* implied that there was so much bandwith with these satts that local HD channels could be carried as well.

Since these satts are already in orbit, what's the holdup? When do they get reallocated? The proposition if true seems to imply the capability to out-capacity Voom. This does not seem like it has to wait until late spring. Who knows anything reasonably concrete about this? I hear Voom calling louder and louder.

That would be great news, if in fact true. I had also heard rumors from other forums that Direct TV is going to offer HD locals off a single national feed. No idea when this would happen.

I agree with the INHD1 and 2 comment. I have seen these channels have enjoyed them. D* needs to add these as well.

I thought that these channels were owned by the cable companies...or something to that effect. What are the odds that an agreement could be worked out in that case

They are owned by cable companies but D* could still add them for a price and I actually was told a few months back that they were looking at them.

And the new Sat doesn't go up until March. I don't see this happening until next year. I'll be happy to eat crow on this, but I just don't see it.

If the StarzHD thing is true for this month, it sure would be a great early Christmas present if it was online by Friday, since this weekend is a LOTR Weekend on Starz with the extended version of Fellowship (and rumors of it being "letterboxed" on the SD channel, maybe it might be OAR???) Ok enough wishing I guess, am sure it wont happen (be on air for us or in OAR).

Looking at the current channel layout, it appears 1 HD channel could still go to 110. And I wouldnt be surprised if they can fit another at 119 or 101. (albeit probably sacrificing some SD quality)
