First of all, it's an upconverted SD graphics generator. Also, the camera is going through the graphics generator, which doesn't filter live video very well...not a great combination!

Here in Youngstown Ohio, those video breakups locked up my NBC receiver. I had to reboot the thing with 13 laps to go. ARRRRRGGGGHHH!

Yeah, had a LOT of break-ups/drop-outs here in L.A., but it looks like they kept the HD feed. At least the "HD" indicator on my STB stayed on the whole time.
And to whoever said they hope Fox goes bankrupt....Be nice, Rupert just bought my employer!

Somebody explain how the above is possible? If the problems reported were at the source (Natl NBC) and even affiliates were experiencing it and bailing then how was someone nearly immune?

Is there more than one satellite feed or landlines feeding some affiliates?

All affiliates have the same HD satellite receiver. There is an east coast/west coast feed. I had breakups incoming that were bad enough to apparently lock mine up with about 15 laps to go.

Welcome to NASCAR!:D Try to catch the Bristol Race on March 28 and you will see LOTS of bumping, banging, rubbing and tempers flaring. Man I love this sport.

PS - Glad Gordon didn't win!:p

Like Whitllam said he learned it from his daddy. His dad never hesitated to bump, wreck, or just plain beat the heck out of whoever was in front of him to win a race. Dirty driving is the Earnhardt way.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the restrictor plate on the 8 car didn't have just a tiny bit larger opening in it. You know Nascar hands out restrictor plates to the teams. So, if they had a particular team they would like to see win, it would be very easy for them to stack the deck in thier favor. Since nascar is the one who hands out, collects, and inspects restrictor plates, no one but them and the team themselves would ever have to know. A very small difference in the size of the opening makes a large difference in performance and ever since his fathers death at Daytona, the 8 car has been extremely fast at restrictor plate tracks. Coincidence?

As for the broadcast, perhaps it was just my local station, but I noticed a fair bit of pixellation and graininess. Perhaps those who argue that 720p would be better for fast paced sports are correct. I also had breakups as others have mentioned and some of them were pretty bad, but to be honest, I wasn't sure whether those were form the original feed or simply reception problems on my end. The weather has been bad the last few days here and it seems to have affected my reception somewhat.

It will be interesting to see FOX broadcast the races when they are up and running with their HD as I believe they will go with 720p which as been established by guys like Joe Kane of DVE as THE format for fast motion video.

Only if you ignore the fact that he was also fast there before his father's death.

That doesn't mean that Nascar does or does not give 'The Call' but your conspiracy evidence is a little off.

Also, #8 didn't seem to be faster than the #20 car. They seemed pretty equal.

Interesting. Maybe, maybe not. What about the fact that his sponsor is Budweiser, a company that spends a fortune of sports advertising? Maybe bud is simply spending a lot more money than others on the car and R&D. Or is there a spending cap imposed by NASCAR?

Fact is the 8 was the best car all week outside of qual. I watched every practice and it was obvious. The plates are handed out every morning and I doubt their is a FIX.

Also I am as far as you can get away from being a DEI fan.

What the DEI bunch knows about plate motors still has not been figured out by the rest. If its a gray intrepretation of the rules.

Thats Racing.

Don't know if this might have had something to do with it, but Just checked the Solar weather info, and a geomagentic storm is being reported at 22:48 UTC(probably earlier too) ...

Although the surround sound (with the engines audio in my rear speakers and the announcers in the center speaker) made me feel like I was in the stands.

Not once has any announcer even mentioned that the race is being produced in HD. The only people who know are the ones who already own HDTV. Given that, there are some engineers working their butts off to make this first race happen, basically just for us. I know...I was doing it last year on the first Grammys (this year also, but that's another story). Believe me, they will be taking notes, reading this forum and improving with each race.
If that isn't enough, every time you see the aerial shot, remember that's how ALL the cameras used to look. :)
why don't the networks have a small icon next to their own that says HD or something? i have wondered this more than once

Using a SR-T151 Samsung OTA HD tuner, I swapped back and forth
between 1080i and 480P and saw only slight difference between them.

This was with a XGA front projector on a matte white 60" wide screen.
Given the real-time nature of sports, I could see that 720P could be
better. 1080i may well be more suited to offline productions where they
can get the presentation polished for it.

BTW.. I thought the Ford GT was an older Ferrari during the ad, but
couldn't figure out why the V8 sound. What a shock when they said it was a new Ford.

In the pre-race posts over the last couple of weeks it was stated that one of the production trucks used in the Super Bowl was going to Daytona. While the crew was undoubtedly different, the cameras it contained were the same ones as in the Super Bowl.

What I saw IMHO (and experience) was different video "quality" due to the venue. That's a big track. Plus it was outside meaning cameras shot from a much greater distance. Any type of haze, smoke, or pollution in the air is going to be visible with tightly zoomed in shots. Not to mention motion on closeups due to the winds there today. They do make stabilized long lenses, but there's no guarantee they were on the truck hired by NBC. If you remember most of the third quarter of the Super Bowl was shot through the fog of the pyrotechnics smoke at halftime which took a lot of the detail and crispness out of the long shots. Many people also posted what they saw as graininess in the cameras at the Super Bowl, mainly due to compression artifacts IMO. All this said, I thought it was a pretty decent broadcast. The wide shot of the cars entering the pits was especially nice and showed a lot more scratch detail in the cars. I could still see individual heads in the crowd in the far corner looking down one of the long stretches, impossible to see in SD. And yes, there were SD cameras besides in the cars, and yes we'll have to live with them until more HD capable production trucks are built and putfitted with a complete set of HD cameras.

Which explains the lack of difference between EDTV & HDTV.
