WorldSport has started showing live soccer events in February 2004. One or two matches are shown live each week throughout the season. In addition, taped soccer matches in HD are shown every day.

Warning: Zap2it and on-screen program guide are not always up-to-date about these live events, so keep an eye on changing schedules. I will be updating the above list from time to time to keep it accurate. You can also check www.worldsportsoccer.com for the latest news and updates.

Edit: This thread was originally started back in February during the previous soccer season. I have updated the first page to reflect the latest schedules of the 2004-2005 season.

Is the source HD?

I did not know Europe went HD for some events such as the UEFA.

Any more info on other HD programs?

I'm now officially jealous of any and all who have Voom. Not only do you get the World All-Stars (aka Real Madrid) live but UEFA cup matches. I've got to start working on a suitable story to explain to my wife why we need two satellite services - and the spanish language package (so I can get all the Champions League matches on ESPN Deportes).

Oh, yes! Everything on WorldSport is pure HD! I haven't seen a single upconvert. These HD broadcasts are exclusive to WorldSport channel, according to the announcers. I don't believe Europe has HD, although Japan might be watching HD soccer too.
And I can tell you it is a completely different soccer experience! They use much wider shots, so you can see half of the field at once without loosing the details. Something that can only be done in HD!

I do not know if Japan is watching these games but from what I understand Rainbow Sports Networks has hired two companies in Spain to do both the graphic and the production of the these games in HD. Media Pro does all the production. They have their own truck and have their own uplink facility to send the HD signal to the U.S. I contacted WTvision for a schedule of the games and the guy was nice enough to send them to me.

If you want links to these companies that are producing these events in HD for VOOM go here:

Who provides VOOM with the HD signal for Soccer Games?

The list of games I posted here: Exclusive: Schedule of Next Soccer Games to be broadcasted LIVE in WorldSport-HD

There will be more HD games coming after March since the soccer season ends at the end or early June.

If I had a good line of sight to 61.5 and VOOM carried HDNet, these soccer games and the new hardware deals would make getting VOOM a no-brainer. (I would keep my Comcast HD but reduce it to Basic + Digital Classic tier.)

Unless Zap2it updates its listing before the game, the only way I know of is to check the websites of UEFA or of the club itself. They post schedules for upcoming matches. For example, tomorrow's game is scheduled to begin at 3PM EST (21:00 local). Zap2it.com is currently showing 12PM through 6PM reserved for this game. This might change by tomorrow.

I will be updating the first posting in this thread as we get close to each game.

I hope, someone will get a chance to watch it. Please post your impressions!

Couldn't resist... got home early...
The game looks fantastic! As good as it gets in HD! So far, haven't noticed any compression artifacts, even in fast motion shots. A couple of dropouts, but nothing unusual. Everything seems to be in HD, including all close-ups and replays: several different angles! And sound is in 5.1 DD: gives you a feeling of being there...

Good game. Italians are ahead 1:0 after the first half...
Update: 1:1 in the second half. French crowd is excited!
And by the time i wrote this ... it is 2:1! It took Inter less than a minute to regain the lead! It only gets better...

Yes, looks like they lost the French feed for a moment: WorldSport switched to a La Liga game for a few seconds. Now it's back on!
The score is still 2:1 (or rather 1:2 if you start with the home team).

Nice touch importing the teams' logos.

I am curious how the announcer(s) were. Did they use the same guys who do the La Liga games? Understandable English (accents)? Insightful or inane comments?

Did they pull off the 5.1 well? Good mix of crowd noise? Could you hear anything from the field besides the whistle?

How does the PQ and sound compare to the MLS games shown last year by HDNet (if you were able to watch any of the HDNet games)?

Yes, I think I've heard the same announcers before (La liga or Spanish Cup). Some accent, but not annoying, IMHO. Comments were good, but it seems to me they are less familiar with these teams, than they are with Spanish clubs.
5.1 was good: I could hear surrounding noise and stadium announcements. Not sure about "field" sounds. I don't think they used directional mics, though I didn't pay much attention to it. I don't have HDNet, so can't comment on MLS. May be Sean can?

I did not watch too much Soccer on HDnet last year. I think I saw one game and there was not much excitment and decided it was not for me. The stadium was more than half empty and so on.

In comparing the HD quality. I have to give HDnet the edge but VOOM is not too far behind. There are more angles shot on VOOM than HDnet from the one game I saw on HDnet. I do not remember how the graphics of the scoreboard and stats of the game were in HDnet but on VOOM, they are superb!

I think another big difference is the sound. On HDnet it is also 5.1 but there is hardly anyone there. On the UEFA and La Liga matches the stadiums are packed and you can sense the excitment of the fan. Heck there was a woman last sunday that showed her nude breast and the HD camera caught that. I had wished I had a PVR for this moment. She looked good too. There is more excitment in these games and the PQ is not too far from HDnet and it still excellent.

is this a trend for Voom to keep showing soccer in HD, or is it a one-time experiment?

i's like to hook me up with one of these, but am afraid they'll pull the plug.

are these games being shown live?

where is the best place to get the hardware from?

thanks.
