I guess the title says it all. I hope Bob Ross can tell us that WCBS-DT will be multicasting the early rounds of the NCAA tournament. After reading reports of other stations doing it around the country, it would be a shame if CBS' flagship digital station wasn't on the cutting edge on this one. Whaddyasay Bob?

I guess the obvious question would be:

Why not?

Bob,

Given that my local CBS (KPIX) is also missing fromt the list, I'd like to get some more detail also. Is there equipment issues, some people just don't want to do the work, what?

Mike

Hi All,

There are both technical and political issues -

First is the NCAA, these 5 stations have a special "deal" as much as a experiment. It would be a different story if we tried it for the entire network.

Second - we do not have the technical equipment to do multiple channels anywhere but KTVT.

I will say IMHO we will be doing more of this kind of programming in the future. It is great - thanks to digital - multiple Digital NTSC games for part of the time and then full 1080i HDTV for the finals. Flexibility for the digital future.

Bob

So why is it that KTVT isn't going to multicast the early rounds? Also what types of plans do they have since they are the only ones to have this equipment? All I have notice is the Doppler weather channel on 19-2. I asked a similar question here: http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum20/HTML/001712.html

I would only add that it would be nice that any simulcasts would at least be 16x9/480p and NOT be NTSC up-converts. To be more specific, digital through the entire pipe and not NTSC camara to digital to ultra-low Mpeg-2 bitrate Sat Feed to 480i digital to NTSC to 480p digital, etc. Just straight Digital Camara to final transmitted Mpeg-2 bitrate to sat. feed to simulcast transmission.

I know that flies in the face of maximizing the bandwidth of distribution channels (ala satellite), but bigger TV's mean I can see all those artifacts my 27" didn't show (well, at least without looking real hard).

One can dream, eh?

Rick

KOIN will switch from our normal 11 MB HD/4 MB SD multicast mode to 5 MB SD/5 MB SD/5 MB SD multicast tomorrow morning and back to HD/SD for Saturday evening then back to SD/SD/SD for Sunday daytime and back to HD/SD Sunday night. Since this is all done by manually reprogramming the encoders (a MAJOR pain) it means I'll be putting a lot of miles on the car this weekend going back and forth to keep the quality up. The picture quality does not have to look ugly if managed correctly.

Bob Ross,

This hadn't occurred to me before (guess I'm slow), but couldn't the networks/stations really pick up some audience for sporting events by commonly simulcasting. For instance, CBS carries a bunch of NFL games every Sunday (during the season). With simulcast, each station could broadcast multiple games like a mini Sunday Ticket. Could this be fitted in without running afoul of contract issues with local affiliates and the NFL?
