Only a handful (a very small handful) of stations have their splicer online. The vast majority will not go online until 8/30 - at the earliest. What you saw tonight in San Diego doesn't at all reflect the actual HD feed that will be coming through in a couple of weeks. There may be problems, but not necessarily anything to do with the problems you saw tonight.

Some guy on DBSTalk.com who says he talked to someone from D* in the know that says Sept 21st for both FOX and NBC. No confirmation from D* directly though. Now you know as much as those on DBSTalk.com.

Bottom line is no one in any official capacity has said yet but the rumor mill is running hot on all kinds of things from the start day of NBC and FOX, to which new HD channels and when and here is a doosy, that by October D* will own V*. Place your bets on the truth and good luck!

I read your local thread quite often because early on WDAF was having some of the same problems we were having.

Other than the people you have been talking to at WDAF, I am really in no position to espouse what WDAF might do or might not do or when it might or might not happen because I don't work there and every station has their own set of priorities. I have no doubt that WDAF and FOX are aware of the situation and there is a plan of some type. Beyond that, I am not at liberty to say, either in public or in private, anything else about it. Sorry.

I believe a minor miracle has happened.
After being off the air for at least 24hrs,Fox 17-1 in Nashville, has suddenly reappeared this evening in stretch mode.
My Sony 300 has the HD box lit up just like the other HD OTA channels do.
Could this mean that they have done the upgrade and have had the splicer installed?
My God,it's full of stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So why is this in stretch mode?
Oh Hell,at least they've done something different.
Hi,

I receive the Nashville Fox station via OTA and I watched the Redskins vs. Rams game last night. I have a MYHD card in my PC that I watch OTA channels with to my projector. The signal clearly showed up as 1280x720p through the MYHD card. It was only a 4:3 upconvert but they were clearly sending out a 720p unpconverted signal as it looked much better than what they usually have been sending out which was a 480i digital signal. So, Nashville clearly has their equipment installed!!!!

Nashville needs to be put on the splicer installed list.

I'm seeing the same thing from WZTV in Nashville....stretched picture and the HD indicator on my STB, meaning 720p or 1080i coming from the antenna. Whoooooooo!
Yep, WZTV Fox out of Nashville is now sending out a 720p unpconverted signal so they need to have the splicer installed. My MYHD card reports a 1280x720p signal being received from 17-1 Fox.

Alright!!! Bring on the HD-Football,
Mike

There's no confirmation that they have had their splicer installed yet. Keep in mind, before the affiliate can get the splicer installed, they must be 720p HD-Ready (have a 720p upconverter and an HD capable encoder installed.) What you're seeing is the result of that and doesn't necessarily mean that the splicer is installed.

However it appears that pretty much all stations that are 720p will get the splicer before 9/12, and they are still urging stations that will be 720p by 9/12 to get on the schedule ASAP - which seems to indicate that there are more installation slots available than affiliates ready or willing to upgrade.

As Ken has urged many times - relax and let it all play out. Nobody is getting HD yet, and outside a few possible exceptions over the next 2 weeks - there's nothing to get until 9/12. The 2 biggest hurddles are:
1) Station ponying up the cash to upgrade to 720p capable.
2) FOX getting the splicer system to work right so they can get HD sent out over the distribution network.

#2 was completed yesterday, and apparently Nashville has taken care of #1 so don't worry, be happy :)

Thanks for the info CPanther95. I see what you are saying now. I thought since they were upconverting the signal to 720p that they were ready but I now see that it doesn't mean they have the splicer installed yet. Hopefully soon.

Thanks,
Mike

I think it a previous thread it was already determined that shows like Arrested Development, Tru Calling, etc, would be in HD this fall. My question is, for example, once we are getting HD from FOX, would a S1 repeat of Arrested Development be in HD, or will it be in "high resolution" while S2 episodes will be HD?

Unknown at this point, but if widescreen is any indication, if it is shown in HD first time, it should be HD on the repeat.

I don't know if this infomation is telling or not about the splicer, but Nashville's Fox is multicasting: 720p on sub-1 and 480i simulcast on sub-2.

It means there's a real good chance that Nashville will be getting HD on 9/12.

I thought I read in another thread that the engineer at WZTV said they would have the splicer installed and ready to go by Sept 12th. I might have seen that in the local thread, I don't remember. Wish I did so I could go look it up.

WHBQ-DT still can't be received here in Memphis. They may be HDTV ready, but the only people watching it will be the engineers. I live like 3 miles from them and can't pick it up.

Ugh.

Thanks foxeng, but I think you misunderstood me :). What I mean is...FOX is going HD a couple of months before the new FOX season begins. So between now and November, there will be repeats of widescreen shows like Arrested Development, Malcolm in the Middle, etc. My question is will those repeats from previous seasons only be in high res widescreen, or will they be in HD? So for example, will the Arrested repeat on 9/12 be in high resolution or in true HD?

Well the "new FOX season" started in June. FOX went to a year round season this year.

It is still unknown (they haven't told us) how they will handle shows that are HD that were/are shown before Sept 12th. My WAG would be if it has air in ED, then it will be ED, but any new episodes that air after Sept 12th would be HD, but again, I don't know what FOX is planning on doing. They haven't told us much yet about many issues on the HD side.

I think it's fair to say there are a number of AVS members who also feel the way you do.

Based on my understanding of the technology, and what I have been told by others who understand these issues better than I do, I have very high hopes.

I agree with the information that Foxend and CPanther has provided I am looking for big things out of Fox and I think we all need to be patient in the beginning to let them get some of the bugs out. HDTV sure has come along way as last proved here in Boston you had 2 football games and the Red Six available in HD and to think where we were a year ago.

To my knowledge, my FOX affiliate is still not broadcasting in 720p, however, my Hughes HTL-HD receiver lists "The Casino" as being in broadcast in HD tonight. I'm assuming that nobody will be getting "The Casino" in HD, and that this was just a mistake?!

There are a lot of guides listing FOX WS shows as HD recently - no FOX shows have been HD yet.

If they decided to slip one through tonight, only a very small handful of stations who are currently online would be able to pass it in HD.

We will not know until it hits air, but my guess is no, it will not be in HD, just widescreen. And the number of stations who could air it in HD tonight if it FOX did air it in HD, you could probably count on one hand. Starting tomorrow night will be a different story.

Thank you very much CPanther95 for the information. Your Panthers look like their taking up right where they left off last season.

Despite all of the complaints and impatience I read in many threads on the forum sometimes, this is truly a most exciting time for hd viewers. I'm excited about the upcoming television year! High definitions offerings are getting better and better each year!

So far FOX is on schedule, and we're finally very close to 9/12 so it's not too difficult to wait just a couple more weeks..

But that doesn't mean I'm not going to be tuning into Arrested Development and The Casino tonight...just in case ;)

Malcolm in the Middle was in Fox Widescreen in Washington, DC.

I only saw the end credits to Oliver Beene (new episode, btw). It was the same credits as SD, so I am taking that as it was in Fox Widescreen because CBS/ABC air different credits for HD.

I assume we can say goodbye to the Fox Widescreen logo. Why didn't they start tonight? 4 possible shows (OB, MITM, AD, The Casino [series finale too, so its last chance to be in HD])
