I seem to remember the first HDTV in this country was analog
and sometime in the late 70's.

HBO started in Jan 99' if I'm not mistaken.(No I think that
was Showtime that started Jan 00')

Here is an excellent general history that should answer your question: http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/tcom/hdtvhistory.html

From this it would appear that the first "digital" over-the-air HDTV broadcast in the United States was a test transmission from WETA in Washington, D. C. in March, 1992, followed by a public demonstration of same in May, 1992. The digital transmission system has been altered since then.

I suspect that the first "fully ATSC-compliant" over-the-air HDTV transmission has yet to be broadcast.http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

The Japanese started development of the analog 1125/60 system in the 70s, first private demonstrations in the early 80s (in the States) and public demonstrations started in the mid-80s.

The first public demonstration of HDTV was 20 years ago this past April. It was sponsored by CBS and NHK.

Before the development of ATSC there were several demonstrations by NBC of the Sarnoff/RCA/NBC (semi) compatible augmentation HDTV proposals via WRC-TV in Washington, DC. (I believe it was a 'Meet the Press' program.)

For a more complete history read 'Defining Vision' by Joel Brinkley of the NY Times.

The US is not the first. Japan is. Try NHK. Or better yet Muse. No that is not a curse word.
