It was just announced on drudgereport.com that Scott spent time at Neverland in the early 90's, and also that he was actually the one who was driving when Paula hit that car on the freeway.

The producers said they aren't going to drop him though, and he's scheduled to sing Cake's "No Phone" on the next show.

Right, if you voted off who you wanted to go, the winner will be the person people disliked the least. The record companies and Fox would much rather see it be the person who is liked the most.

A contestant in a judges car during the competition? That seems really odd to me. Do the two groups mix throughout the competition?

Not exactly.

The point of AI is to sell, certainly. But what is AI trying to sell? In order, that would be:

(1) American Idol itself. (Tune in next week...)

(2) Other FOX programming.

(3) Sponsor's products (as the highest-rated TV show).

(4) Simon (as a bankable producer).

The eventual sale of CDs is a distant fifth, way behind the cash involved with the other products. I can even imagine teeshirts and lunchboxes vying with CD sales for fifth.

And bunkers: You're spot-on about Nashville Star. Cute how that show is on immediately before Idol.
But it wasn't a misdemeanor, it was a felony I believe.

He was originally charged with a felony, but it was pleaded down to a misdemeanor. Anyway, I've read that he informed the producers of this prior to the competiton and, thus, it seems unlikely that anything will come of it.

Much as I can't stand Scott and his "serial killer/white gangsta" act, if he's going to get voted off the show, it should be because of his performances, not due to a run-in with the law TPTB seem to have been fine with. Whether they should have been fine with it is another matter, but they were.

Ironically, he has one of the best voices out of the men; it's too bad he has such a negative stage presense.

I wonder what category they'll be singing from next week. The vastness of the prior categories (whole decades, etc.) suggests they're going to run out of fresh options soon. "Hm, what's on for next week? The 70s? The 80s? Um...songs that were #2 on the charts? Songs in 3/3 time?"

Has anyone figured out what's up with the audio? Someone is clearly dialing down the volume during the performances, and bringing it back up when they're finished.

Felony? Oh, pleeze.

The women involved initially told the cops to back off. The next day, after they slept on it, they decided to sic the law on him.

So the cops went for it. After all, who was this guy anyway? They probably thought that they were finally taking Eminem to the Graybar Hotel.

Johnny Carson got away with a lot worse (and joked about it), and he didn't even have kids as an excuse.

I was wondering if you are listening in 5.1 or stereo mixdown.

While 5.1 has been around for some time for movies, it's use for a live music oriented show is still quite new. A big challenge is to have the mix sound good in both 5.1 and 2 channel mixdown. I know alot of work went into dealing with these issues, and I think the changes have resulted in a much improved presentation. It seems most of the complaints about the audio mix have dissipated.

I think everyone agrees the picture quality has been really good. Fox specified that the show was to be shot natively in 720p, and the latest camera technology was used to accommodate that.

After a rough start, FOX mastered mixing 5.1 "on-the fly" for NFL games. AI probably has a similar learning curve and has been steadily improving.

We're listening in 5.1. The audio doesn't sound bad -- and never has -- but it's definitely not as good. There's just "less" of it, for want of a better term. It's like someone took the sliders on an equalizer and put them all in the middle during the performances, then restored them when the performers were finished.

Any conspiracy buffs out there? Here goes...

What is American Idol's nearest competition? It's Nashville Star.

Who is Nashville Star's Master of Ceremonies? It's Leann Rhimes.

Remember a few weeks ago when ABC clipped Boston Legal's wings and wouldn't let James Spader mention the Fox Network by name, as it would be "advertising a competitor"?

Under these circumstances, why would someone on AI be dim enough to choose a Leann Rhimes song without expecting some consequences?

Paula is the shows weak link and Im sure she knows it. It be nice if they replaced her with someone like sharon Osbourne who would at least give a more honest assestment of someones performance.

Although Sharon Osbourne is a lovely person and appears to be quite good with the business aspect of the entertainment business I don't think she would be that great in any part of talent scout position. But I could be wrong. :)

I agree though that Paula needs to go. All she does 95% of the time is rephrase and repeat Randy's opinion. LOL I guess she's to layed back (medically) to form any personal opinion. :D

That's another problem I worry about with peoples voting. I'm willing to bet atleast between 1/3 to 1/2 of the viewers that are voting are too wasted during the performances to distinquish between the better performances and poorer performances and the consistances of the performers. Then end up calling in just basicly voting on the person their physically infatuated with. :(

Well apparently ~80% of the Scott voters aren't the wasted ones. Their just out of the other 2/3 to 1/2 that are either slightly tipsy but coherant or competely on the wagon. ;)

Actually we should consider that a small portion of the voters might be tone deaf aswell and that what their hearing and considers as wonderful sounding may not actually sound as wonderful as they think. ;)

I've also wondered if Randy is tone deaf. After hearing his comments of Mikalah's voice. Sure she had a nice raspy Janice Joplin type of sound but most of the time she was singing flat.

For over two weeks the live 5.1 audio has been bad. Thin, lifeless, with generous amounts of cheap sounding digital reverb smeared over everything. The lead vocals are weak in the mix, often drowned out. Even my wife complained, and she usually never cares about audio quality.

I switched my audio source to an analog stereo signal, keeping the HD picture. The audio improvement was DRAMATIC, much better focus, clear, well balanced, "meaty". Even though the stereo sound was not in sync with the HD video, the improvement was so significant we both didn't want to switch back. It was like watching a different broadcast, with different contestants...
