This sounds great but I cannot see a satellite below 88 degrees. Are E*s
HD feeds above that? If they are, I'm a new customer.

Great news. I am glad I waited before going the Comcast route. What about HDDVR does Dish lease their HDDVR like Comcast?

Why would E* change from the 1440 x 1080 resolution? All they have to do is look at the VOOM threads on this forum and other forums to see that the old VOOM customers swore that the PQ on VOOM was the best in the industry.

On another note, I guess I'd better sneak out and put up my old 61.5 dish before my wife gets home. This is what I'd hoped for. For once I get to keep my hardware and get more programming!

Marcus, I'm afraid that Comcast will never see that many HD channels, even if they do get rid of analog channels. They are just not interested. Of course, in 5 years that may change, as they do add 1 channel a year, and if in a few months D* joins E* with some VOOM channels competition may be a factor.

But with so many of us wanting the 4 nationals still not on (ESPN2HD, UHD, HDNET/Movies) or a subset of them, I just can't conceive of Comcast adding so many specialty channels.

One thing I think would be nice is the news channel since we don't get HDNET and have no news in HD.

Of course, my pessimism might be wrong.

I'd rather have those four non-VOOM nationals anyway, along with HD versions of other channels I have (FX, for example).

And they actually added a whopping THREE channels in Baltimore last year, and two already this year. I figure they'll add one more before they call it a year.:D

That is sad. I guess the more north you are the harder it is to see. But I'm in San Francisco and no trouble with VOOM. And, I know there qre people in Seattle watching VOOM. So perhaps it's a-just- in-your-neighborhood problem?

She did confirm that the new channels will be from 61.5, but did not know which satellite would be transmitting the HD-10. However, the old 61.5 sat is also Ka, so only the one LNB will be needed.

Ah, well.
I'd put more faith in what Scott has heard indirectly from the key players than what has made its way to the E* CSRs. Not that she is necessarily wrong, just that without official word backing up her statements, I'd lean towards the accuracy of Scott's info at this point.

What direction does a satellite dish need to face to receive a signal from 61.5?

Ah, well.
Presumably, some planning went into this. Now, what could have happened in just the few hours between the press release and this new announcement that would have completely changed Dish's plans for the Voom channels?

The terrain is the problem, hills and lots of redwood trees in the way. I would have purchased Voom months ago but for this problem.

I heard from a local dealer who got an email from DISH that said that DISH would be adding 14 channels on April 30th. Too much info going around.

I hope you're right about the CSR being in error. But she wouldn't even take an order, which I find REALLY strange.

I'm sure we'll learn more over the next few days, and I might revisit the issue in another month or so, after folks are actually receiving the new HD. I have 3 sat boxes- one of which is a 721, using 2 cable feeds. So I'll need 1 or 2 more cables to hook up a 942, which means the installer must put in a switch or such, and I'll need to run more coax thru my house.

Honestly as a soon to be ex-Voomer, I'll miss the HD movie channels (Cinemax and Starz, yes Starz) more. But I am very happy E* is adding these as I was noticing this past week that the movie selection was getting better.

Did anyone else read that StarzHD was one of the MPEG-4 test channels running at the summit. It looks like E* has more up it's sleeve.

This is just awesome news.

I have to agree Voom’s demise looks like it might wind up being the best thing for the moment for HD.

This really should start an arms race between DISH and DirecTV and even the typical slow cable folks cant sit behind for too long if the 2 satellite companies are slugging it out.

Couple of thoughts-

DISH might just be adding 14 channels but only 10 are from VOOM- maybe they are getting some of the other things they are missing?

Keep in mind that RAINBOW-1 still has TONS of room left. DISH could easily add every HD channel in existence and still have room for like one or 200 hundred more international channels. Who knows what the spot beam capabilities of the thing are- Dish could use it to provide LIL HD for probably a third of the US population by hitting just the larger eastern markets. Maybe they could give SD locals to everyone who doesn’t have them now? There’s really a lot of possibilities there- it will be interesting to see what they do. They could really put a hurting on DirecTV- recent bits and pieces look like DirecTV has no intention of using the CONUS KA capability of Directv-8 for end user services, and who can figure out if the spaceway birds can provide large quantities of HD conus- its just totally unclear.

One thing is for sure-

I’m not committing to any provider for any length of time until this all shakes out!

Whereas I appreciate the nice compositing job they do, I found it ridiculous if they'll keep LAB alive but kill (even if temporary only) say, Worldcinema, Divine or Filmfest - LAB doesn't make any sense for somebody else than us, working in 3D/2.5D-video-anim/post field.

Against my better judgement (because in the vast majority of cases, it's a complete waste of time to call a CSR for information under these circumstances) and just out of curiosity, I called Dish. The CSR had absolutely no information about Voom channels.

I really don't think one can take anything at face value anymore until it actually happens. Just look at what's happened today. First, a PR that 10 channels start on May 1. Then a CSR that says nothing will be happening for months. Then an email from someone somewhere saying it will be 14 channels starting April 30. Does Dish really know what's happening? I have no idea. Does anyone else really know? It certainly doesn't seem like it.

If x number of Voom channels appears in my guide this weekend, fine. If not, that's also fine. I certainly wouldn't do anything based upon what might or might not happen with Dish's HD programming until it actually happens.
