Another excellent CSI! I really enjoyed the behind the stage scenes with the mechanics of all that machinery, truely amazing what goes on back there! And the Circ vertical show, that would be neat to see in person. Does anybody know if that was part of a real show or only for CSI?

Of course he assumes she's stepping out on him and immediately calls her up on her cell. He proceeds to rant her out about it and then she tells him she's there arranging a surprise birthday party for him.... as you might imagine, she was pretty pissed about it so I think we are supposed to assume that she split with him over it maybe?

CSI
By Rich Heldenfels in his Akron Beacon Journal TV blog

I caught up to ''CSI'' this morning and right off the bat it reminded me of something that had struck me during ''Grey's Anatomy'': the perils of improved TV technology. I watch shows on my HD set for the most part, and last night's ''Grey's'' was absolutely brutal about Ellen Pompeo's skin. ''CSI'' reminded me of that because it was visually dazzling (the sound's pretty great, too) in that Cirque du Soleil opening and beyond. The attention to lighting, the sharpness of the picture -- I kept having to pull myself back into the story because I would be admiring the visuals.

Beyond that, it was clear at a ''CSI'' press conference this summer that the show was ready to rumble with ''Grey's,'' and it sure did tonight. The Cirque stuff. John Mayer. The Danny Bonaduce stunt. Setting up two more storylines for continuation. How good Marg Helgenberger was in that last series of scenes. Brass's tattoo.

And, for everyone still amazed at the end of last season, the show is gleefully playing with the audience regarding Sara and Grissom. Nothing explicit said by either but they're sure hitting the notes, not only in the meal business but in that ''bye'' scene. It's not exactly sexual tension -- since we know they've crossed that bridge -- but it sure is tension, and great fun to watch.

Just a few random thoughts.

I still like CSI Vegas the best, but is it just me that thinks the amount of incidents that happen to the cast (on Miami as well) is a little over the top?

Never being in law enforcement, I can only guess that their lives are not near as exciting as whats portrayed on TV, at least to the amount of "Perps" that seem to have it out for them, then again, I guess thats the whole reason we watch, is for that excitement factor, that most of us are missing in our lives?

Also, I guess the saying "never mix business and pleasure" is something they have heard in their lives?

Kind of like "Greys anatomy" which I have zero interest in, but doesn't the premise seem like ER meets "girls gone wild"? as in, I surely don't want to believe that medical professionals can make sick cash and constantly get some action while on their breaks?

Watched my recording of CSI last night, and thought it was a terrific season opener. This show continues to be the "reference" for HD picture quality, lighting, sound, and generally adult-level intelligent writing and entertainment. It is just gorgeous to look at and listen to.

The backstage-at-Cirque views were really excellent, as was the bar scene and unexpected intimacy with Catherine and Nick dancing... followed by the "I think I know her" second blond and Nick dancing post-script to the scene. Then the very subtle Gil/Sara hints and clues that now are apparently going to be present, well I find these very entertaining and well done. And the whole next morning self-administered SA kit scene by Catherine, well that was just brilliantly invented and implemented.

Just great, all around. Kudos to the whole ensemble cast, including "background players" like Hodges (William Langham).

What was that HD/DD5.1 promo in the lower-left corner at the opening of last night's show? It appeared during the highlights from last week's Part 1, right after Catherine was taking a shower to clean herself off after her rape.

I'm sure it was an "HD" promotion, and it started off as just that... an HD. Then it magnified and grew diagonally into the entire lower-left corner, ending up as some large rectangular something that had "HD DD5.1" in the upper line of text. But the lower part of the rectangle was totally the wrong size, being MUCH TOO LARGE for where it was placed.

I was only able to read what looked like the top right half of what might have been the large letters "DEFINITION", so that what was actually visible seemed to be the top part of "INITION" which I took to be the end of "DEFINITION". I don't know where "HIGH" was supposed to be.

This was certainly bizarre, and totally perplexing to me as an HD viewer. We're not talking misplaced 4:3 framing... we're talking completely misplaced 16:9 framing! Very strange.

In contrast, the CBS eye bug in the lower-right corner of the screen was perfectly placed. This makes the strange size and placement, and half-missing content, of that lower-left HD promo rectangle even odder.

I went back and replayed it a second and third time, trying to figure out what they might have intended, but it just seems like a real screwup by whatever graphics designer made that one up.

On another note, I thought the whole show was another terrific one. Thoroughly gorgeous to look at, complex but understandable story... no loose ends. Except for that very final scene. Can someone please tell me what Grissom saw on the back of that micro-photo of Izzy and the baby? Was it a closeup of a doll's eye? Or something else? And what was the significance of it?

That HD promo bug in the lower left is something new this year with CBS HD programs, ugly as hell, looks like something you'd see on TNT, or one of the other cablenets, it looks cheap IMO, the CBS revolving HD bug in the lower right is much nicer.

Regarding the last scene, you saw the same thing I did, a partial pic of a doll's eye. I suspect that this will be a running plotline throughout the season.

I have to agree. Lovely PQ and sound was phenomenal!

Plot-wize, I think that Linday being kidnapped and a perp found all in 20 minutes, was a bit stupid. I realize the writers anted to work allot of stuff in, but it could have stretched to another episode?

Can someone tell me what the significance of the very small pic of the doll face was at the end? Grissom looked like he had an idea. Sorry, I didn't catch it.

so is the story of Danny Bonadeuce's killing going to be a season-long story ? the preview for next week looks like it's about 4 people killed, so a different story. Oh, and about the face of the doll on the back of the picture, I can't seem to remember a previous story that brought this up (the wife and I usually watch the CSI repeats on Spike at night)

Saw it coming ... As soon as Catherine started looking over her shoulder and talking to the kid (instead of watching the road) you knew a crash was imminent ...

(From Marc Berman's Friday, September 29, 2006, Programming Insider column at Mediaweek.com )

At 9 p.m., the winning ratings ball was shared between ABC's Grey's Anatomy and old CBS faithful CSI. Grey's Anatomy scored a 16.1/24 in the overnights (#1), 23.31 million viewers (#2) and a 9.4/22 among adults 18-49 (#1). CSI averaged a 15.3/22 in the overnights (#2), 23.49 million viewers (#1) and a 7.9/19 among adults 18-49 (#2). Although the lead-in support from Survivor decreased last night, CSI is back in action..

I was watching the 09/28/06 session of CSI after recording it on my DVR.

I could not hear any of the characters talking until about a third of the way through the show. However, the music was still audible during that time.

Did anyone else experience the same problem or should I complain to my local CBS station?

All I know is I had my hand on my remote most of the time. I had to turn it down for commercials.

It's not your local station. CBS has been having problems with their DD5.1 soundtracks for some time now. I usually get the center channel dialog repeated through the right surround; sometimes no center dialog at all, as you mentioned. It's been going on so long that it's inexcusable, and frankly astonishing, that nobody at CBS has noticed or done anything about it.

Yeah, that one was telegraphed. The best one I can remember was on Third Watch, I think it was the last season, you didn't see it coming and it was spectacular, although I'm hazy on the details, I remember it caught me completely by surprise.

Great broadcast last night, i jumped as well when the car crash happened.

If anyone still has it on their DVR, I thought I noticed the dead guy blink right when he's in the foreground and they slowly zoom up to Gill inspecting the model. It was like the 3rd or 4th minute of the show, right after the initial commercial break after the opening credits. I replayed it like 3 times, sure looked like he blinked to me!

They're using live people to play dead people. Tough role to play there

I thought I noticed that as well and I was watching it in SD. I was too lazy to go upstairs and fire up the theater...

For having as many viewers as CSI does, it's interesting that it gets so little discussion on AVS. What did everyone think of tonight's episode? I thought the ending was just fascinating. Grissom kind of laying it out, almost taking a shot at Vegas and the lack of morality and the potential effect it has on the future of society.

Did anyone find it interesting that at the beginning the woman who was assaulted mentioned the whole "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" in looking for a cheap thrill, and then at the very end as Grissom is talking he mentions how a morality built around "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" makes the place such a one as wehere its hard to develop a moral compass for young adults.

Thoughts anyone?

I thought it was ridiculous and over the top. I don't think the Grissom character would ever say that. That entire scene with them talking at the end seemed tacked on for some political purpose which has nothing to do with the show. Did the person who wrote the script for "fannysmackin" ever read (the CSI scripts) or watch CSI?

Thought Grissom's 'speech' at the end of this week's episode was a bit much, too. Sounded phony. Liked their slap at the Vegas it-stays-here ad, though. Have watched all three CSI's for a long time and it seems they're all going over the top with the blood and gore. Wish the producers would review last week's "Wire in the Blood" on BBCA on how to create suspense without excessive surgical zoom-ins highlighting mayhem--even though this Wire episode was horrific. The episode was about a police officer controlling serial killers, and had more effective writing, filming, editing, music, etc. IMO; plus, of course, two hours for the episode.

The trend to 'super heroism' on the CSI's is getting out of hand...the slow motion walks of CSIs or teams, with intrusive rock music cutting in is getting comical. Wish they'd show, just for laughs, rock bands playing away on the side--with singers as needed--as the teams go into their slow-motion walks. Guess they should also show the bands in the labs when they go into their overdone computer-graphics 'zooms' into bodies or whatever. -- John

Excellent points. When you see stuff like "Wire in the Blood", "Waking the Dead" and "Messiah", all great UK cop shows, you really get a measure of how silly and Americanized stuff like the CSI's can be, as if they're playing to a much less intelligent audience. I like watching the CSI's for the great photography, but the stories combined with the pretty much wooden dialog are a big step down from the excellent stuff available across the pond. The biggest problem with the UK stuff is that there is not enough of it, I have alerts set at Amazon-UK for new series issues of the above and other shows. I've got "Wire in the Blood" Series 3 on it's way to me right now.

On a technical note, since the UK has been using a 16x9 TV format for many years most all of at least the last 6-10 years of these shows are in 16x9 DVD format.

I thought it was an interesting show last night. I can't get over the whole "Fannysmackin" concept and how they depicted the kids doing it as if it was a party and how there was nothing else to do. They are in Vegas, which is one very large city which I assume would have plenty of things to do, even for kids.
