I've received an unsolicited email from the NBC station engineer in Minneapolis indicating that Notre Dame football will be available in HD this year. Sorry, I can't provide any other confirmation at this time.

As a Purdue grad, all I can say is yippee - skippee

wdcoy 08-04-2005 04:52 AM

Boy do I hope this is true. It would be great seeing the Fighting Irish in HD.

Don

George Thompson 08-04-2005 06:52 AM

OK, I guess I can confirm that report. I happen to be working on the Avid HD edit suite that will be doing the games.

Sweet. Nothing like seeing the Irish get there butt's kicked on a regular basis. Kidding aside should be very interesting to see what Charlie Weis is able to do with that team this year. That and whatever complaining folks like to do about ND they always have a decent schedule.

brewer4 08-04-2005 07:09 AM

Cool. Too bad they have not been a very good football team for a long while. Still good to see College football games in HD.

Reagan 08-04-2005 07:42 AM

Very nice. And thanks for the confirmation, George. Looks like it's going to be good season for HD.

Will NBC Sports have DD5.1 too?

dg28 08-04-2005 11:10 AM

Great news

irish4hd 08-04-2005 11:26 AM

Excellent news - certainly justifies the use of my screen name!

AFH 08-04-2005 11:33 AM

Oh, no! Say it ain't so. NBC is beating ABC to the punch when it comes to doing regular season cfb in hd? Man, what a stunner. Good news though.

DB2 08-04-2005 12:43 PM

I know it's a long shot but what are the chances the games will be framed for 16x9 like Conan?

DrDon 08-04-2005 12:50 PM

Thanks for the story, Marty, and thanks to George for the confirmation.

Not really fair to compare, since ND games are national broadcasts, and ABC games (with few exceptions) are regional. None of ND's away games are on NBC, so its not too hard to setup at the same stadium over and over, in fact they have 5 games in a row at home.

DrCrawn 08-04-2005 02:01 PM

I'm so sick of seeing ND football on every week on NBC, but at least it will be in HD now. Who is their wind dummy coach this year?

DeanS 08-04-2005 02:13 PM

Another opportunity to watch the Trojans smash the Irish - only this time in HD!!

Rick_R 08-04-2005 02:52 PM

I'm with you DeanS. Since USC is playing Notre Dame in South Bend this year I am glad I will be watching in HD.

I guess you have been a fan for only 3 years. Do yourself a favor and look up the all time series results. I remember when SC fans were afraid they would never win another game after they went 20 years without success against ND. All great programs go thru tough times, right now ND PSU NEB AL are down as were USC OK recently. They recovered as I'm sure the Irish will. Seriously this is great news for all CF fans - hope ABC joins NBC CBS and ESPN in HDTV!

Sweet, but why do you need an edit suite for live football? Are you going to be editing the games so the Irish actually win? :D

George Thompson 08-04-2005 02:58 PM

Sports Graphics and inserts for edit room at 30 Rock...

bgall 08-04-2005 03:01 PM

Oh ok. Then the suite you're working on would go on the truck?

I guess I wasn't thinking outside of the box with the word "edit"

Joseph S 08-04-2005 03:39 PM

All the more reason to up the alumni contribution this year. :D Great news!

Great News. Thanks for the schedule Fredfa

Rack 08-04-2005 06:01 PM

I wonder if that's real EST or just Eastern Daylight or Standard Time depending on the time of year. You never know since South Bend is still on EST right now. :)

Whereas Chicago is on CDT and NY is on EDT at the moment.

varkus 08-04-2005 07:02 PM

Sweet - National Championship time! :)

Man, that's a tough set of games...... I doubt that the Irish win more than 2 of them.

Wise has his hands full for sure. He seems to be a good guy..... I wish him the best of luck.

fredfa 08-04-2005 08:00 PM

And to confuse us even more, daylight time ends three weeks later this year, Rack, under provisions of the energy bill passed last week.

(I just passed along what is on the Notre Dame sports website.)
