Give me Surface's good old-fashioned Bug Eyed Monsters any day over the "they're everywhere, and they look just like us" plot of Threshold. That worked for Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but it's been a copout and a cliche ever since. At least Invasion combines both themes.

I'm still watching all three shows, ranking them in order:

1.) Surface
2.) Invasion
3.) Threshold

Doesn't matter whether I rate them by plot potential or eye candy, that's how they stack up on my scorecard. I'm willing to suspend disbelief, ignore some logical lapses and forgive uneven acting as long as the show doesn't get too predictable or overtly insult my intelligence.

Surface is getting better and I hope that Invasion will too. I think that Supernatural and Threshold are the 2 best new scifi's at this point.

Just my 2 c.

Surface is hokey, and has a B-movie feel to it. But at least it's delivering. My problem with Threshold and Invasion is they are relying on being a more complex and intellegent story, but they are coming up way short and there's not much there.

yet. (hopefully that will change)

It seemed like there were plenty of dark scenes, i.e. underwater and the midnight unauthorized visit to the beach. This was definitely a very good test of the ANSI contrast of your display device. I was watching in a totally dark environment on a CRT (F38310) and it seems like the light sources, especially the bug, were blinding white on the dark background. A show like this is not for an older low contrast LCD.

decent episode tonight though i cringed when the sister was acting, she look really weird, like her eyes were sunken in her head, but the lava scene was interesting. this show has some promise. by the way someone posted a screen cap of the lead lady, she does have a head shaped like a pumpkin but i was suprised at how well she keep her body, can we say butter face. lol

I'll keep watching this one, for a while anyway. Doesn't try to be too intellectual (without the writing to back it up) - just monster movie type entertainment.

The "Old Faithful" scene was absolutely pathetic; the volcano eruption special effects looked like something out of a seventies-era Japanese monster movie. The backdrop for the park ranger looked way too much like a projection.

Guess I've been spoiled by HDTV!

Some of the stuff is hilarious like a creature living in "liquid hot magma" and matching DNA to a fossil. Bad science seems to be more acceptable in BEM SF for some reason though.

Puppet Master story lines, on the other hand, require spending the money saved on FX to be spent on better writers.

Pat

While I may link to and mention products as examples, I don't recommend specific products.

My wife loved this scene; thought it was really cool. I didn't comment because this is one of her favorite new shows. I have read over at fredfa's thread this show is in ratings trouble. I am hoping I can delete the season pass soon.

I actually like this show, believe it or not. And not because Lake Bell has a very nice body. The daughter has a nice body as well. ;)

I DVR'ed it again last night. Master control at our local NBC affiliate forgot to flip the HD switch, so I got to watch it in bogus SD for the first 20 minutes or so.

I can't say I really like it, but it has its moments. Invasion seems to be on the same level, but that show seems a bit more interesting for some reason.

This show reminds me more and more of Godzilla being made as a TV series.

If the show lasts long enough, we may see the monster trash Los Angeles along about February or May sweeps. NY and Tokyo have already been done.

Sounds good to me. Network TV needs a check-your-brain-at-the-door monster movie type series. I like Surface in that you can watch it without having to think too hard, or decipher numbers/clues/symbols/etc. I hope they keep it simple and stupid, very easy TV to watch before MNF each week. :p

Last night's rating ticked up slightly in the 18-49 demographic, but "Surface" continued to slip even more in overall viewership.

The numbers so far:

Week / Rating/Share
One 7.9/11
Two 6.9/10
Three 6.2/10

A show about a kid and his freaky-looking iguana and a guy who's afraid of raindrops. I give it two more episodes and I'm a sci-fi fan.

There were two scenes in the last episode that made me roll my eyes. Of course, the pathetic attempt of the Yosemite eruption. And the part where the lightening struck the shed where the kid kept his iguana.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when that happened didn't everyone run out and look at it. Then they turn around and run away! I mean...don't you want to put out the fire before it completely burns down and possibly spread to your home! Did I miss something there?

All in all, I think this series sucks big time. Some cool effects though, like the giant toilet bowl flush in the middle of the lake.

Wasn't it the father that suggested the playhouse was hit by lightning? I believe kid brother (and I) think the little sea monster set it on fire with his electric eel abilities.

hmmmmm I want to like this show. 43 to 44 miles to get the the Earths' core?? Creatures oozing slime that is indestrucitable (anyone remember 'unobtanium' from that movie, THE CORE?)???, Nobody else noticed the ELF's waves (we already know that Blue & Sperm waves can 'sing' for thousands of miles this way).

They are really pusing the hokey sci-fi. Even the most inplausible science fiction can be believable if presented with some kind of real world foundation (within the context of the story being presented) Is Nimmy gonna protect that kid or eat him? & I really hate the 'my brother is alive' story line.

I want to like this show, but damn why don't they at least get like freshman biology/physics majors to point out the most glaring trouble spots.

carry on with your HD-Lite Directv loving banter! <--Comedy Gold

Hmmm, actually I kinda do. This one gets to ride a bit longer for me. Invasion, on the other hand, has too little substance to be so slow. I mean, hurricane, then nothing...

I think the next time that kid sees Nimrod - he'll be much larger and will likely protect him from another beast.
