Sure, but there's no guarantee the next build coming at the end of this month will be the final build, in which case that's hollow comfort.

You know, we give Verizon a hard time about their update process, but I at least have to give them something for trying.

If I were go to back to Comcast, i would be using the same UI as they've had for over 5 years.

The benchmark should be DTV or Dish. I am a recent FIOS convert coming from (actually still have DTV on one set) DTV and while the HD may have slowed the last year or so the innovation did not. Both of these sat companies seem to rollout added value far more than the comcast/FIOS duo. I see that now from FIOS so I am willing to cut them some slack. 1.9 is and should be breakthrough. Anytime your shoooting for a difference maker of that magnitude it comes with some setbacks but the message on when to expect needs to be a little more transparent (something like target Q1). If its not they risk losing some potential loyal customers.

In search of video bliss...

You do realize that Verizon is little better? The Q6416 DVR has been around for almost 6yrs now. What I don't understand about Verizon is why they go out of their way to do a big PR for stuff like the 1.9 update, when it's not even close to ready (we're talking 6mos+).

They are a TON better. There have been numerous enhancements to the guide in just the 2 1/2 years I've had FIOS and before I had FIOS there was a big change when they went to the current guide.

Comcast's guide software has remained completely untouched for over 5 years and if I had them I would STILL have a DCT6412 DVR (with its 120gb of hard drive glory) which is even older than the QIP6416. I know they look similar, but the QIP6416 actually has much newer internals in it which makes it more comparable to the DCH6416.

I had Comcast for quite a few years (we're talking over a decade). There are a few differences, but in different ways - The main ones being the internet and the lack of compression of HD channels. I know I'm not going to win posting in a FIOS thread, but I know the differences from experience. If I thought Comcast was better I would still have them.

That said, I'm glad we're finally getting the updated box stuff, just not so much that I'm being nickled and dimed to death.

How do I swap for the 7 DVR? I called the verizon wireless store near me, spoke to a fios rep who told me to call verizon to order it. I called verizon and they told me I needed to go to the web to order it. This looks like I have to do it via the mail and it'll cost me $40.

What I did is call the Verizon Plus store and ask if they had any 7232's in stock. When he said they did I then mentioned that my old DVR was starting to act funny, and before I could go into more detail the guy said he would call into Verizon customer service to create a ticket for me and the box would be ready when I came in with the ticket number "HE" created for me.

If they don't offer to create a ticket, I would find out if they have any in stock first and if they do, then just go to store with your old box and ask if you can exchange it. I know my Verizon store has phone lines directly connected to their customer service so a customer can call in directly to make a ticket and then they should swap it out, without costing your anything.

I made the mistake of ordering an additional box around Christmas online and then called the store after the fact to see if they had any HD boxes in stock. A long story short, I should have called the store first and not even mess with ordering anything on their website. They even told me that in the store.

TLDR: Just go to the store and ask to swap it out and they or you can create a ticket on site. (if they have them in stock at the store)

+1. Exactly what I did and got excellent help in the store. They *might* try to tell you that *you* have to call Verizon to create the work ticket but that's only because they are being lazy. They definitely CAN do it in store. It can take a few minutes to do it (depending on Verizon's server load and response) but they can do it there. Calling ahead tho is best and what worked easily for me.

I had no problem at all exchaning my old box for the new one; just went down to the retail store in the E. Liberty section of Pittsburgh (the only place you can do this), in the Old Nabisco building at Bakery Square, and swapped them for free. The word from the guys there is that 1.9 has been delayed to late April.

I live in SOCAL Indio, switched from Time Warner to FiosTV in Dec. and was very impressed with the picture.

Then the SOCAL carrier for PBS switched stations to KOCE and guess what??? FIOSTV does not carry it in our area so no Lehrer News Hour, BBC Masterpiece Theater etc. Complaining did not help and so had to go back to TW, they switched to KOCE on Jan 1st!

Wonder what they are smoking at Verizon, to have app 500.000 customers w/o PBS !! No PBS in the Coachella Valley !!

It looks like VHOs 2, 7, and 8 rolled out TruTV HD as planned today. Tomorrow should be VHOs 4, 9, and 9a.

That and if you add a new SD/HD channel everyone benefits. If you add a new 3D channel only about 1% benefit.

Someone who just switched to FIOS mentioned in a local forum that Verizon doesn't want to add new HD channels if it requires additional recompression for more bandwidth. He switched from NYC TWC, which I'm also on, that has ~165 HDs versus just over 100, AIUI, for FIOS.

But switched-digital wide (SDV) also results in too many audio/video dropouts or "not currently available" messages here, plus reduced PQ, presumably, from rate shaping and reduced SD format resolution. Planning a switch to FIOS, too, as it reportedly enters my neighborhood--finally.

Read that FIOS is gearing up for IPTV delivery for channel expansion. Anyone know what's technically preventing just adding another light wavelength to expand bandwidth for more channels? -- John

Correct me if I'm wrong, but once Verizon starts getting rid of the multitude of SD channels (especially the ones which have HD doubles) there should be more room to add some HD channels. But according to "Twitter Joe" this is something they don't want to do.

Fiber is not the issue. The rest of the infrastructure is. Here is something to read...
