On the BBR report they talk about the channels being added by ratings in the next rollout of HDs. BET simply has better ratings than the others they are negotiating with.

Verizon carries every other HD channel Viacom has a hand in, so I would wager that there's a contract provision that is forcing them to carry BET HD. Verizon is still missing multiple channels from Turner (CN, TCM, until last week, TruTV), Discovery (OWN, BBC America), and Comcast (G4, E!, Style), so perhaps the contracts on those aren't package deals.

First off, do you have an unobstructed view to the se/sw? (I always forget where the DTV satellites are). You may not even be able to get satellite because of some obstruction.

And if you went satellite you'd have to deal with the numerous weather related outages that don't seem to affect FiOS. Is that something that's acceptable to you or not?

I can't speak directly to DTV's picture quality or service because I've never had them but I did switch to FiOS from Dish. And the only reason I made the switch was because Dish refused to carry MASN. They've since picked it up but still don't carry the HD feed.

The PQ of satellite was a dramatic improvement over Cox cable and I was perfectly content with Dish and their 4 channel HD package (at that time) until MASN became an issue. I thought Dish's PQ was the same as what I'm getting now with FiOS but the only time FiOS has gone out was when we lost electricity.

One thing that is unrivaled is FiOS internet. It rocks!

Agree completely!

Really, that's the main thing that's causing me to stay with FIOS. While I'm sure that FIOS has better picture quality than Dish (which I also have), I cannot tell the difference. I'd much rather have the HD channels that FIOS doesn't have but Dish (and others) do; e.g. Style, E!, BBCA, FSC, HLN, TCM. But I need that Internet.

People thinking of switching have to look at what HD channels each provider carries and then evaluate the perceived difference, if any, in quality. Just don't fall for the promises, made by any provider, of new HD channels "just around the corner". Unless it's an official announcement (as TWC does), forget it until it's up-and-running.

Well,
Multichannel reports ESPN 3D will be added by 4/5...

Wasn't expecting this one so soon - but just another kick in the balls for us FSC HD fans...

Get it?? Kick in the balls?? (Trying to maintain an upbeat mind with FSC)

Of course to receive ESPN 3D you have to either have the HD "Ultimate" tier or pay an additional $9.99/month?!?!? What a joke! D* offers it for no additional fee.

Has anyone ever noticed this? Not sure if this problem is indicative of the latest Moto 7232 box, but when you start playback of a recorded show, if you should hit stop during playback it'll revert back to that same root channel being recorded, even if you had been on a totally different channel when you hit play. This means it can essentially give you a spoiler, should you start watching it b4 it completes the recording.

If they don't charge for it, then D* spreads the cost of the channel out for all customers to pay for it. While I think this is a good thing for Verizon to carry, I personally don't think everyone should have to pay for a channel that only a few have any use for. Maybe as more people are using 3D, they can include 3D channels with more packages. Remember that sports channels are are never "free", and just about always come at a substantial cost.

Very true, good post. Regardless of how a multichannel provider packages their channels, a customer needs to look at the total cost of the channels they view rather than paying a huge sum and thinking that channels are "free". ESPN charges cable companies something like $6 per month per customer compared to channels like VH1 in the 20cent range.

I've got the 7216 and it does the same thing.

It's no different than any other channel. many people don't have use for other channels, yet they have no choice but to pay for it since it's included in their package. This is how I feel about all the ESPN channels. If I had my way I would strip all the ESPN channels out of my package and save all that money since they are very expensive per subscriber. But that's not the way things are. The same goes for those .TV channels too and several others.

But I'll certainly get more use from BET-HD than any of the ESPN or .TV channels.

Yeah, my 6416 did the same before I swapped it out. It's an issue with 1.8, not an issue of the hardware.

I'm with you on this one. In 17 years of subscribing to cable and now 2 months of FIOS I don't think I've ever once tuned to any of the ESPN channels. That's a lot of money I've paid to them for something I don't use!

17 years and you haven't watched a football game or baseball game on ESPN? How unAmerican!

Everybody has channels that they never watch or use. I wouldn't go without ESPN but I could name a few that I could care less about too. Can't make everyone happy, but at least in my area, FiOS is beating out the competition in either offerings, picture quality, or both.

While some here are complaining about this or that channel, I saw a Verizon FiOS banner ad for a free MR-DVR for life. That's a $20 a month option only available to new customers.

The banner ad said "free multi room DVR for life". I didn't click on it to see what the fine print said but the banner was pretty clear. It even had a pic of a snazzy looking 6416/7216 next to it.
