These rat bastards! I resent the content providers owning channels. This is the type of bull$hit that happens. I must be passionate, because I almost never watch OLN, and I couldn't care less about hockey, so I'm just expressing my feelings on the issue in general. Yeah, but what do I know... I'll leave it up to the experts to debate. (Oh Yeah.)

More info from today's NY Post article by Larry Brooks. It seems the way the contract is written that the NHL could stop all this B******* if it wanted to.

SMK

....Not only did the Rangers' Cablevision ownership sign off on the NHL deal with Comcast/OLN, they did so after receiving assurances that blackouts of their fans would never become an issue as per the language in that contract, sources have told Slap Shots.

Sixth Avenue continues to misrepresent the issue. The league is not an innocent bystander here. By refusing to exercise the authority granted by the contract itself to direct Comcast/OLN to make the games available to any and all cable and satellite systems, the league has chosen to align itself with Comcast's Flyers ownership — against the Rangers and against the fans.

Headline: Bullies Team Up With Bullies.

One more time, the contract language that first appeared in this space nearly two months ago: "Unless the NHL otherwise approves, the right to exhibit OLN [hockey games] . . . may not be granted on a going-forward basis...[to systems that have OLN on a subscription tier.]"

Interestingly, when an OLN representative agreed to share the blackout paragraph language with us, the individual chose to omit the first five words of the sentence.

How ironic. How appropriate. The Mickey Mouse NHL leaves Disney's ESPN only to wind up on the biggest Mickey Mouse network of them all.

So I've been lurking on this board for a bit and haven't felt the need to give my two cents until this. I don't understand why this happened and more importantly, I don't know what to do.

Basically, Comcast was demanding Dish move OLN to a tier more people receive (and Dish pays for).

Of course, then Comcast would demand payment for each of those subscribers. An addition, it seems clear that Comcast will be raising the price for OLN in the near future to pay for the NHL rights it purchased.

Dish decided that it didn't want to pay 30 cents a subscriber a month for a service (so far according to early NHL ratings on OLN) that about one in five hundred cable/satellite subs watch. But it was willing to continue to pay that for the three million or so subs who were already receiving OLN.

Comcast said no, you must provide it to at least 40% of your subscribers (about 150,000 more).

So, faced with having Comcast pull the NHL games from the OLN customers it did servce, Dish just disconnected OLN entirely.

You could complain to Dish, to Comcast, or to the NHL.

Ugh why doesn't Directv yank OLN already, maybe we WOULD see CSN-Philadelphia after 10 years waiting?

Umm that's a pretty stupid comment becuase D* has no reason to yank OLN. They were not affected by OLNs demands because they were already satisifed prior to the NHL starting

As much as I do love the NHL, I have to be honest about what I'm most upset about. The Bull Riding Finals (tell me i am not alone) are on in 2 weeks and OLN was showing it. I really HAVE to watch them. So either I fly out to Vegas and see it live, or I switch cable providers. Why did this have to happen right now.

You are obviously not alone, Goosh: the PBR provided far higher ratings for OLN last spring than the NHL has so far.

Cablevision has agreed to move OLN to its digital basic tier and will now be able to carry the NHL games.

I agree. I have yet to watch any games on OLN. I have D*, NHL Center ICE and HD programming. HD games take preference over everything, then CI games. I know it is a mute point, but OLN sucks in comparison to ESPNHD which at least some games were in HD on D*. I guess if you didn't have CI or HD it would have some value but for me it is a dead channel and a waste.

In retrospect, anyone else think Comcast put a little extra pressure for on Cablevision by putting 8 Rangers games on OLN, knowing there would be a dispute

Glad they finally came around :)

DVD's are about movies & people watch them in living rooms, how many people actually use their computer drives to sit and watch movies- Bluray's Andy Parsons

Wonderful--- then I suppose I will not be the only one switching over to Cablevision in time for the Finals. Thanks to whoever found that out-- hopefully I can do the switchover in time.

Boy what a year for ESPN to give up hockey, I have already been screwed out of 2 Red Wings games this year by Dish( or is that Comcast ), my bill that comes every month that says 165$ should not allow this kind of stuff to happen, I am very very upset with everyone over this, the least being Dish

my Wings will be completing a 3 game sweep of the Crackhawks tomorrow night and I will be sitting with my thumb up my ass and paying for the Center Ice Package

I have said it before and I will say it again, when will the NHL get the picture that no one cares about national broadcast NHL games?? I just do not get it

The egos in the NHL Board Room will never allow that, Gary.
Gary Bettman and the owners will continue to insist they represent a major national sport, even though the WNBA gets basically the same national ratings.

(Local NHL ratings, of course, are a far different matter as you well know.)

Too bad you don't have Bell...TSN is showing the Hawks@Wings game tonight (In SD), and in the next few weeks in HD: Nov. 9 LA @ Detroit ; Nov. 16 Detroit @ Calgary....

my God I wonder how quick I could get BEV installed here :)

is the Detroit at Calgary in HD from TSN??, the schedule didn't show that a few weeks back

Buttman is the exact reason why this current NHL is in a pathetic shape, no one gives a flying you know what about national NHL coverage, all it has done for years is cost me and many others games just like tonight, who in fact pay 150$ a year for Center Ice

Tsn is picking up the feed from OLN tonight....the Wings/Flames game will probably be a TSN production 'cuz the Flames are a Canadian team....the Kings/Wings game will probably be TSN picking up the Fox Sports L.A. feed.....

Well, D* didn't take long to fire a salvo about OLN. On the way to work this morning I heard an advertisement on a sports radio station from D* saying now was a great time to switch from E* since D* has exciting events like Pro Rodeo and NHL on OLN.

I don't get it-- how can they be advertising this when they flat out dropped OLN-- they shouldn't tease people like myself with that "we have the Pro Rodeo" when they clearly don't!

DirecTV has not dropped OLN has far as I know. It's Dish Network that dropped it.

The acronym for Dish Network on this forum is E*, for Echostar, the parent company of Dish Network. :)

Ugh... And Supercross is on OLN this year too, right? Goddamn hockey. Ruins itself, and now they're trying to take everything else down with it. I want VOOM back.

And then...

Supercross is *not* on OLN. Outdoors (US Motocross) was on OLN though

Supercross will still be on ESPN2.

Not sure if this is completely benign, simple product placement, or a jab at E* from D* via FOX - but last week's Killer Instinct had an OLN coffee mug prominently displayed on the police captain's desk. TIFWIW.

Add a Canadian service to your Dish. Now that both BEV and *C have CBC HD (Hockey Night in Canada) and TSN HD, there are plenty of games on. I've seen your Red Wings several times already.

How do you add a Canadian service to a US based Dish CO?

In case you didn't know, I am a Colorado Avalanche fan!
