Not sure if it has been noted elsewhere, but Dish has added Universal-HD as of Friday, 2/10 in MPEG2 on channel 9426.

"Women's Ice Hockey
Finland vs. Germany, 7am"........

Odd to see hockey @ 6 AM CST, let alone women's hockey. Looks OK on UHD via D*.

It is "WOW" TV!

Yes, a brief look shows good HD images, via Comcast in Detroit.

No blocking, but not a vibrant HD picture. Looks soft compared to HDNET and INHD broadcast hockey.

And we believe the HD picture to be very good to excellent on NBC and Universal. Also, SD on USA network is good. Opening cerimonies was great!

Why don't they just put the 100% opaque timer/score bug right in the middle of the screen???

The upper left placement of that fully opaque brightly colored graphics bug is apparently simulcast for SD and HD and therefore positioned to be 4:3 safe, not a separate graphic specifically for 16:9. Couple this with the very very large and wide and brightly colored UHD logo, and I find the onscreen graphics too bright and offensive to me in that it really obstructs too much primary screen real estate.

Do you think they could make the UHD/olympic ring logo any bigger and wider???

Too bad they can't have separate HD graphics placement (much wider apart) framed for the 16:9 HD feed going out to the HD CHANNEL THEY'RE BROADCASTING ON, so that it is not right in the middle of your HD field of view!!! Really would be nice to have the primary HD field take the center 97% of the screen.

Otherwise, looks good. No motion blocking that I can see.

P.S. - same comment about NBC's full-colored logo in the upper right, again not really placed way off to the right for 16:9 frame. Why can't they just be "humble" like is done with CBS's eye, and make it mostly transparent and colorless and placed inobtrusively, to let the viewer see the action rather than being distracted by the NBC logo placement/advertisement?

P.P.S. - I'm not crazy about the "terra cotta and yellow" Torino 2006 color scheme around the boards of the hockey rink. Not bright and vibrant. Not terribly TV-friendly, which is a surprise to me.

Anyone watching the UHD broadcast have any commets on the audio? Any phasing issues? If so, how are you listening? 2/0 downimx from your set top box or 5.1 through a receiver?

If they would letterbox the SD feed, then the graphics could go in the corner and the image could be framed for 16:9 and not restricted to the 4:3 safe area. But, we probably won't see that for another few years. :(

I agree that the UHD bug is too wide, the rings are completely unnecessary, and it would be nice if the score bug were placed for 16:9. But the net result is still preferable to the FOX NFL scorebar.

They also remove the score bug when the clock isn't running.

Via Comcast in Detroit on UHD -

PQ:
--The shots from the broadcast center are real nice.
--The women's hockey (blech!) game looks very good. Brilliant, sharp colors and the ice looks clean.

Audio:
--2.0 and it sounds good in PLII.

Opening ceremonies were for the most part great. Primary cameras were HD but many of the floor-level cameras were SD. I liked that NBC presented it all in widescreen and no 4:3 shots.

Edit - re: the UHD logo and rings...what's the problem with them? For me they are in the upper-right corner of the 16:9 screen and not in the primary viewing area.

Most of us don't want our displays carved into "primary" and "secondary" viewing areas. But I do agree that it could be much worse.

And neither do I, but it appears that this logo complaint is much ado about nothing. That logo is in the upper-right corner of nearly all the camera angles...so it'snot as if you're viewing the game through that as you would be with Fox or even MNF on ABC.

And now I am seeing the score box...yep, I can see that it's 4:3 safe location and it sucks! The camera angles prior to that third goal for Sweden totally obscured the goalie.

Okay, I'm done watching this BS women's hockey crap.

You must have an enormous overscan, thus losing lots of perimiter real estate where there is much content. Hence why it appears to you to be in the corners. When overscan is very low, the score bug and UHD logo is NOT in the corner of 16:9.

On my set (with about 1% overscan) the score bug in the upper left is really far in from the left, within the 4:3 frame. It's also down fairly far from the top edge of the The UHD logo in the upper right is obviously for UHD channel only (16:9) and is indeed "reasonably" positioned toward the upper right corner. But because it is very very wide (added to which are Olympic rings) its left end intrudes quite far into the center area of the screen.

I was actually more bothered by what ABC did for the Superbowl, draping the bottom of the screen with a fully opaque score bar, under which was a second dark opaque "drape" that served no purpose other than to obscure another 5% of the playing field from clear view.

Why didn't they just move the score bar to the bottom and forget the second drape? That way only the score bar obscures the playing field at the extreme bottom edge of the screen, but nothing else is lost for no purpose.

What would really help, for UHD logo as well as NBC logo, is if they would delete the colors and make them either very light gray or more preferably lightly translucent (close to transparent)... like the CBS eye during high profile sporting events.

\\

There's so much overscan on my HDTV that I did not even know they had a 2nd drape!

Movies must be OAR, sports and movies must also have 5.1 audio, No EE or NO SALE!

Probably the precise reason ABC did what they did... to not offend the majority of viewers who don't have 0-1% overscan (or "dot by dot"). If they really did position the true score bar at the very bottom of the screen, most viewers would have 1/2 or more of it cut off.

Hmmm...

They have to keep it safe for varying overscan adjustments, so there will always be dead space above (FOX) or below (ABC) the scorebar. IMO, ABC's is almost as bad as FOX, but the difference is ABC allows for less overscan so it's less obtrusive. The darkening (even if blacked out) doesn't bother me as much since IMO, anything on the other side of the scorebar is wasted space anyway. I find it much more difficult to process that 2 inch sliver of content and mentally connect it to the rest of the picture.

NFL on FOX makes me feel like the first time I sat on a Mazda Miata with the top down. I can scrunch down and look out the windshield, or clinch my butt cheeks and look over the windshield. But in normal position, I have a bar cutting right across my view.

US women's hockey (vs Switzerland) not on UHD, but on USA? Bill Clement on UHD said to change over to USA for this game. Comcast's guide has it on UHD. HDTV Sports Guide has it on UHD.

???

Apparently Clement was wrong. On UHD. So glad that Kenny Albert is not doing this game.

I think that comment was for the SD viewers, the first game was on CNBC and the second on was on USA.

5.1 mix sounds like fine. Although I don't like the dialog in the main l/r channels.
