Need a cable box for another room. Will a used VIP1200 from ebay work with my existing setup (VIP1216 and 2 VIP1200) instead of renting a box from AT&T?

Each STB needs to be provisioned to your account. I suppose Uverse can provision it, but I'm not sure they will allow it. Since its coming from a 3rd party. Too risky for me, you don't know if the box has issues.

Because any box you find on eBay, is considered a stolen/non-returned leased device. You have to lease a box directly from ATT. Same with the Gateways, unless you just want U-Verse Internet. Then you end up owning the Gateway that is used for Internet only service.

Just get a Slingbox M1, about $125 to purchase, and you can watch DVR shows anywhere you have a good Internet Connection. Plus all of your subscribed channels. The Slingbox just mirrors whatever is on your home screen and uses a virtual remote control.

Hi JackRyan900, good point but still doesn't explain why it wouldn't work.

There are three differences that I noticed. The Pace responds faster to the remote commands, you can change the Closed Caption Display profile, and the picture is somewhat better than the Cisco 7500.

I would doubt it.

I re-upped with Comcast last month but I checked U-Verse prices. Could have saved a bit but was skeptical of their Internet and the boxes they use for TV.

Even at that point, right after their merger, they were starting to promote D* and UVerse Internet bundles, which were not attractive price-wise.

Or at least what they offered me ended up being more than what I signed up with Comcast.

Supposedly, long term, AT&T is going to get rid of Uverse TV now that they have D*?

I've had U-Verse for over two years, and I am very happy with the service and the picture quality. Internet service has been lost maybe twice in that time, and only briefly; with Time Warner, there were constant problems and the Internet throughput was much slower. As far as the box for TV goes, we have a wired receiver rather than the remote box, so I can't speak about the remote. But the picture quality is very good, the interface for scanning channels and programming the DVR to record things is very flexible, and you can easily program shows from the phone app even if you're out of the house. I might nitpick that the DVR does not allow you to output shows in their native resolution--you get three choices--480i, 720p, or 1080i. This is only going to bother someone who wants to use some other video processor to upscale signals.

Not perfect, just not enough to post about it. Had U-Verse for TV service for probably 2 years or so, in general happy with it. I did have to get to the point where I said I was cancelling to get any type of discount after my 1 year promos ran out, but I don't think that's uncommon with TV providers. Have 1 main DVR and 2 wired receivers (all of my receivers are in a rack in the basement).

I don't have to cancel to get a discount after the promos run out; I just have to call and tell them I'm THINKING of cancelling.

Looks like AT&T is indeed de-emphasizing U-verse TV in favor of DirecTV - http://adage.com/article/digital/t-t...irectv/302689/

I've ordered and cancelled prior to installation twice over the years (once when they repeatedly no-showed for appointments and another during aggressive negotiations with Comcast), looking at Comcast's unimpressive current deals I really thought this might be the year I switched. Not thrilled about losing the one terrestrial competitor in my area, Google Fiber isn't coming quite this far out from Atlanta at this point...

I switched from Time Warner Cable to U-Verse almost two years ago. It has been much more reliable--loss of service = never, whereas Time Warner had periodic outages for hours and hours. Internet speed is better. The U-Verse set top box is easier to use and program. The video is much less compressed ande blocky than TWC cable.

Tech support was here once to install the system, once to replace a broken DVR box.
