Examples:

A screen shot before any motion, still:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f2...cfootball1.jpg

After motion:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f2...cfootball2.jpg

It's almost like the encoder gets "confused" for a couple of seconds, then fixes itself.

But I'm seeing the picture fuzz up a LOT after fast moving full-screen motion or graphics. The "fuzz" kicks in about 2 seconds after the fast motion is over, then it clears up within about 2-3 seconds.

Anyone else seeing this?
That's a good way to describe it. The picture "fuzzes up". I'm getting it too.

Picture macroblocking during fast motion here in L.A. OTA and on the DirecTV feed. Way to present your first game NBC!... crap... Commercials look fine though.

I hope somebody from NBC corporate reads this. The PQ here in Birmingham, AL is downright horrible! The stupid subchannel needs to go or switch to 720p. This is a joke!

looks on par with the Notre Dame broadcasts last year...plenty of blocking in high motion and on the graphic transitions. some cameras look very soft, especially the booth cam.

Not having any "fuzzing" issues on WCMH in Columbus, OH via Time Warner. The PQ is very good, the scorebar fairly unobtrusive by today's standards, and the audio mix seems lively. WCMH is an O&O (ready to be sold, though) and installed some new equipment before the Winter Olympics that almost eliminated with the weather subchannel macroblocking, so maybe that's helping.

See the screen shots above.

I don't know what's causing it, though, if it's on the network level or here on WKYC-DT. I can't get WKYC OTA because it's on a low channel that is difficult to receive, so it's via Time Warner Cable (ex-Adelphia) out of Cleveland.

Guess my problem is the way WNBC is encoding their feed. Odd that NBC's #1 Market station would not have good PQ.

For those asking how I'm watching, an HD PCI tuner card for Win XP on a flat Screen 4:3 DVI monitor. I can view the OTA and cable feed of WNBC-DT.

I am noticing that KNTV San Francisco is presenting this game in Prologic II, not 5.1. I am reading that the game has lively sound in the rears from other areas. I sanyone getting 5.1?

On OTA in Indy seeing the out of focus and fuzziness that corrects itself after a few seconds. Reminds of the issues CBS was having during the NCAA basketball tournament.

In Tampa via OTA we have similar symptoms as described above. Great, sharp focus one minute, then soft the next; also the pic seems to be noisy at times, clean at others. Occasional breakups (could be atmospheric). Sound is great, better than I expected for NBC. Also have the macroblocking on some of the fast motion scenes. Hopefully this on-again/off-again pq will be corrected by regular season (one can only hope).

I'm seeing the same thing as Inundated OTA in Charlotte.

Oddly, I'm even seeing the scorebar (disappointing NBC decided to go with the same crappy positioning) go blur, clear, blur at times when the primary video remains constant.

5.1 in DC, ProLogic in Baltimore. Go figure.

I'm also getting a lot of jitter (same as during the NASCAR race this afternoon) on both stations.

UPDATE: the jitter was from the FIOS DVR box. After rebooting it, it was ok.

I have to agree with the comments on picture fuzziness. It's not just a camera issue either as the edges of the scoreboard at the bottom go blurry too. Macroblocking isn't too bad on KPNX except for the animations NBC is so fond of. The quick sample I checked showed an average bitrate over a full mbit higher than their normal HD programming (14.7 vs. 13.5) , so either their statmuxer finally decided to work properly (for the first time) or they just manually dropped the bitrate on Weather+.

Also the wire mesh pattern behind the score bar and other graphics causes very visible marcoblocking on the HD and SD feed.
What causes that specifically? I'm seeing it as well.

Also, what is this "weather subchannel" business? What are you guys talking about? Is it a second channel? How would you watch it?

Houston OTA. Pretty bad. Sub-channels on. It had better get better than this for the season. Had to flip over to the Super Bowl on the HDTivo to show my friend what it is supposed to look like.

If you're watching OTA on 12-1 (as an example), the Weather + channel would likely be on 12-2. It is an extra channel they squeeze in that robs the HD feed of its needed bandwidth for a quality picture. Here in Charlotte, WCNC's HD feed eeks by on a mere 14 mbps - and any motion causes severe PQ issues.

For me in Tampa, Brighthouse Networks NBC carries the standard HD programming on 608 but they run a weather sub-channel on 607 which steal some of the bandwidth from the HD channel.

Watching KSDK OTA in STL and having the exact same thing.

You would need an OTA tuner or your cable system would have to add the weather sub channel in order to watching.
