Moderators Note:

NBC aided by flexible schedule
By Ed Sherman, Chicago Tribune

Al Michaels and John Madden are together, James Brown remains host of an NFL pregame show, and "Monday Night Football" has an analyst whose fear of flying has him riding to games on a luxury bus.

So it is status quo for the new NFL season, right?

Not exactly.

New television contracts meant lineup shifts on all fronts. The biggest changes? ABC out on Monday nights after 36 years, and NBC returning to the NFL beat for the first time since 1998 with a new Sunday night package.

Here's what you need to know:

NBC

On the surface, it seems like ABC's old "Monday Night Football" is on Sunday night. Oh, and on NBC.

Michaels and Madden are changing networks and nights and will be joined by producer Fred Gaudelli and director Drew Esocoff, also formerly with the "MNF" crew.

NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol had an opportunity to reinvent the wheel but he, obviously, feels comfortable going with established brand names.

What is different is "Football Night in America," a one-hour pregame show that will review all of the action from Sunday's games. Bob Costas will anchor with what should be a lively cast that includes Cris Collinsworth, Jerome Bettis and Sterling Sharpe.

NBC did score the biggest plum: flexible scheduling for weeks 10 through 15 and again in 17. There's a complicated formula involved (Fox and CBS can protect their best games), but in the end, NBC should receive a solid matchup.

Just starting the thread for tonight's game...lets hope my NBC affiliate keeps that bit rate high!

Oh, and as an aside, go Fins!

Anyone getting pre-game in HD? Not here in the Twin Cities OTA on 11-1. Program guide says HDTV, but not sure if that's accurate.

They have corrected it. Now in HD.

The P Diddy set exposed the nasty macroblocking NBC is famous for. Looked just like the Elton John special they did like a year ago in HD. PUKE!

Not getting pregame in HD here WKYC-DT Cleveland OTA. It's the good old SD stretch-o-vision WKYC is famous for.

Bad macroblocking on this pregame concert. Might be my antenna as WKYC-DT is low-VHF channel 2 and hard to pick up.

Edit: They flipped the switch now it's HD. Picture looks great with the stadium lights turned off and the camera not moving much :D

No macroblocking or picture issues with the HD over KPRC channel 2.1 in Houston so far, so good.

F- on the pre-game content though, I kept switching back to the ESPN Boise/Oregon State game to wash to ghey away

WNBC-DT = S.O.S. :(

They should change the name to NMC, National Macroblocking Company.

I don't see how any exec at NBC watching this game on WNBC-DT can be happy with the PQ when compared to the amount of money NBC spent for Sunday Night Football.
The NFL should demand the sub channels of NBC stations be shut off our have their bandwith reduced during NFL broadcasts.

It looks good when the camera isnt panning or moving. What remains to be seen is it a bandwidth problem at NBC HQ, or is it because of that stupid weatherplus subchannel.

Heh, I thought the pre-game was pretty darn cool! I give props to Pittsburg and the NFL for it. Great fireworks all over (stadium, downtown, river, etc), dedicating past superbowls, the bus getting off the bus! ....and to think I'm a BENGALs fan!!......

HD quality seems pretty high here via OTA.

Not getting anything outta my surround speakers as of yet though.

Be back to see what others have to say at half-time..

I noticed in the pregame credits "Ricky Kirshner" - any relation to Don Kirschner of "Rock Concert" fame?

Yes, Pink is dreadful. Trying to copy ABC's H. Williams theme a bit.

Anyway, great PQ so far here on Charter HD cable.

The macroblocking is a LOCAL ISSUE

NBC does not multicast here (Bakersfield, CA), and it looks terrific.

Wendel's audio mix is good so far. The picture quality could be better.

NBC's HD sucks when things are moving - when they just show a talking head it looks great. Ditto on how Pittsburgh presented itself, the city looked great. The pre-game was kinda corny, but who cares ... I'm ready for some FOOTBALL!!!!

The problem may be local but NBC owns WNBC and they are paying alot of money to have the NFL shown on WNBC-DT.
Why would they allow WNBC to show the game with sub standard PQ?

Really Bad Audio, which seems to be par for our NBC affiliate (WFLA). Anything that isn't actually DD5.1 gives no sound, like all the commercials (not a bad thing) and the player intros, musical intro, etc. Been like this on all the preseason games too. idiots.

DirecTV + Antenna + 3 Locations = 325 feet of quad shield RG6. AARRGGHH!

It must be your affiliate because here in phoenix on KPNX it sounds great. Wendel was the mixer for monday night footbal and now works for nbc. He does some of the best mixes in my opinion.
