Was last week's ep (the teacher sex thing w/ Melissa Joan Hart) actually from last season? I ask, becasue Mariska H.'s hair style was from last season, not the short do she has now.

Plus, the almost non-existent Belzer in that ep.

Perhaps an unaired ep from last season?

Sam Waterston's Jack McCoy character made his debut as the head DA (replacing Arthur Branch) in a crossover appearance on the 11/13 episode of SVU, ready to hand DA Novak her head after the fiasco of how she handled the Louisiana child molester case.

Didn't sound too much like Schiff or Branch. He appears to be portrayed as a "no nonsense, I'm not a politician" guy. Also, notice that it looks more like his office, filled with books and clutter (note no glass enclosed case behind him).

Anyone else got an opinion on the "new" Jack McCoy?

Good episode last night.
At the very ending, I don't see why they were looking at eachother with silence.
I am guessing it was since Olivia helped his wife, it was passionate.

Great episode last night.
The talk at the beach with Elliot and his mother was a lot of drama. ha

I normally don't single out individual episodes of TV shows I like, but last night's episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" ('Swing') was one of the best "L&O" episodes in the history of the franchise and one of the finest hours of network TV drama I've ever seen in my life. Chis Meloni and guest star Ellen Burstyn deserve Emmy nominations for their tour-de-force performances (Mariska wasn't half-bad either). Even though it went through almost every cliché in the 'a very special episode' playbook 'Swing' clicked hard and often because the affection regular viewers of "SVU" feel for Stabler and Benson (whose private lives are rarely glimpsed outside a tenuous relation to the week's case) was rewarded. NBC will repeat this episode Saturday night at 10PM, so make a point to see it/DVR it in case you missed it last night. Have some Kleenex handy.

I agree about the cliché and "very special episode" comments. I didn't find anything very special about this one. Stabler's turbulent family life has been included in several episodes over the years although this is the first one that became the main plot.

I didn't know the presence of a third party voids attorney-client privilege. I like shows that include legal details like this.

NOW: my post on AVS Forum.
NEXT: someone else's post on AVS Forum.

I am just catching the end of tonight's episode. Do they shoot this in HDTV now? I know the older seasons definitely had a film look, but this looks like video to me. I haven't watched any new episodes in a LONG time so this might not be too new. Does anyone know?

Good grief, they're breaking canon with this left and right.

It was crazy enough they brought her out of witness protection (which involves new name, new address, new credentials, etc. - wasn't her new name "Emily"?) once, but they're going to do it again?? With her back with her old name?

Old series "Conviction" not withstanding, has Dick Wolf gone off the deep end? Maybe they're setting her character to be killed off?

Un-freaking-believable!!

I'm glad to see she's gonna be back. I liked the "Conviction" series and was disappointed when that ended. But it didn't make sense then either how she was suddenly out of witness protection.

From Fredfa's "Hot Off The Press" thread:

TV Notes
Mariska Hargitay Suffers Collapsed Lung
By Michael Starr, New York Post - January 13, 2009

"Law & Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay has suffered a partially collapsed lung--but will appear in all her scheduled episodes for the remainder of this season.

Hargitay shot the bulk of her episodes before the holiday break and won't miss any time on the NBC series since she doesn't appear in every episode, her rep told The Post late yesterday.

A collapsed lung--which can result from an accident or happen naturally--occurs when there's a buildup of air in the space between the lung and chest wall.

It's not known how Hargitay suffered the partially collapsed lung.

The news was first reported by "Access Hollywood."

That's terrible, Dad.

I noticed, at the end of last night’s episode, they said "All new episodes, starts February 7th." Could this be because of her lung issue or because of the special 6 week 'series' with Alexandra Cabot? Or neither.

Nah, they're going on previously-scheduled repeats to have new episodes throughout February and March (this year's sweeps month). Mariska's health will not affect the immediate future of "SVU" (episodes are either in the can or can be written around her character) but, for the long term future of the series, it might be time for Dick Wolf to start seriously looking around for a new leading lady.

So, last week she was in "Transitions?"
I forgot to even look for her, I didn't notice she was a guest-star.

TV Notes
Mariska Hargitay sidelined from 'SVU'
By Michael Ausiello, EW.com - March 9, 2009

It appears the relapse Mariska Hargitay suffered last week was a bit more serious than first thought.

A Law & Order: SVU source tells me that the... Emmy winner underwent a second surgery last week related to a collapsed lung she suffered back in January. (Earlier reports said she was hospitalized for "routine tests" after experiencing "some discomfort.") And although her reps initially said production on SVU would not be affected, they're now confirming that Hargitay will in fact miss several weeks of work as she recuperates.

"Mariska is recovering well and is expected to return to SVU in the next couple of weeks," her camp said in a statement.

An SVU insider adds that the actress' prognosis is excellent. "She is doing great," maintains my mole. "She will recoup for a few weeks and be back better than ever." Phew.

Remarkably, the SVU source says Hargitay's absence is only expected to translate into one missed episode. And in that episode, titled "Bagagge," Ice-T's Fin "will step in for Mariska."

Also helping fill the void will be Stephanie March, whose ex-ADA Alex Cabot begins her six-episode return engagement tomorrow night.

Anyone watch "Ballerina" tonight? Carroll Burnett was COLD-BLOODED tonight. I never watched any of her work , I'm not that kinda guy but her acting tonight was something else. Man she played a cold blooded mofo like a pro. The lady is an expert in her craft for sure. You just don't see that kind of performance anymore.

Nope. KNSD (NBC O&O station in San Diego) had it in HD.

You need to call KNTV engineering people to complain.

I loved the tag-team interrogation Stabler and Benson did with both Burnett's character and her nephew (who was a little too far out but not enough to ruin it). That back-and-forth scene went on for almost 10 minutes uninterrupted, which is rare for network TV drama. And did I miss it or was Stephanie March on-screen for less than a minute during court and a quick interrogation scene (behind the mirror)?

Good episode even if it was clearly Emmy bait for Burnett in a bid for Guest Actress nomination. Sorry Carroll, but if any guest star from "SVU" is going to win the Emmy this year it's gotta be Ellen Burstyn from her appearance on "Swing."

Is KNTV going to rebroadcast the episode because of the glitch? It was annoying to see some commercials in HD then have the episode return with black borders on all four sides. I don't understand why broadcasting the correct format isn't automatic.
