4:3 window-box here as well (WRTV-HD). It was in HD the last time they showed it (approx 4 months ago). War Of the Worlds looked great last night, however.

Unless you have a 4:3 display, it would be pillar-boxed, not window-boxed.

A check after the Super Bowl shows it in SD in Washington too. So much for blaming it on the local station (well known for not "flipping the switch").

My current primary display is indeed 4:3.

Can't vouch for all locations, but some saw in SD due to affiliates recording (and airing) a different version of the "Meet The Fockers" than the one fed live (which was simulcast in HD from network).

Why a different version? I did notice in Kansas City, the ABC bug was the old bug from seasons past, not the current "bubbly" ABC bug.

It was an extended version of the movie. Seems more affiliates chose to air the extended version than the live (standard) version.

I guess I owe our local ABC chief engineer an apology. They are notorious for not "flipping the switch" but this time I guess it was not their fault.

They threw on an election-update overlay during last night's movie (Charlie and The Chocolate Factory). Probably covered more than a third of the widescreen picture......(good thing I didn't record)

In other news, my sharp daughter asked why the score sounded like Spiderman. I informed her both films have the same composer (Danny Elfman).

IMDB also says that the Aspect Ratio of the DVD is 2.35:1.

Yes? That doesn't mean the broadcast wasn't open matte.

DaveFi,

Thanks for pointing this out. I should not have assumed that the movie was cropped. I'll remove that word from my message.

However, I do prefer seeing movies in 2.35:1 or higher aspect ratio, if they are available in that form.

Catch Me if You Can next week...

local ABC affiliate's tower still down so no HD for me until I go off to college in the fall (the tower might be done in the fall). It's on as a second subchannel on a MyNetworkTV affiliate. Not sure how crappy that looks since I can't pick it up but probably not the HD quality I crave...

I'm longing for a day when all severe weather coverage is on the subchannel...

It has aired before, I have it recorded. Thankfully that was before they had the equipment to fill the screen with pop-ups and huge promo logos, so my recording is nice and clean. Take that ABC!

The "they" you refer to isn't ABC, but rather your local ABC affiliate. Mine doesn't have the equipment yet...so during a severe storm and an HD program, they go to SD 4:3

At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it.

Thankfully my local ABC station does not pollute the screen.
I have a hard time watching movies with commercials but ABC is pretty good about logical breaks.

Catch Me If You Can is a must watch.
Seems like ABC has a lot of films with Tom Hanks lately.

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so

WEWS-HD in Cleveland has HD graphics/weather overlay. The bright blue school closings banner at the bottom of the screen really trashed the darker scenes.

What is strange is my ABC affiliate showed some 'chef' show and the station in the city north of me (~90 miles) which I can also pick up showed Catch Me if You Can.

Are there hog's in these movies, or were you just using a cliche? You can see how much of a fan I am I've seen parts of the first on none of the other 2, 3, 4...whatever it is.

Hog refers to Hogwarts - the school for wizards.
