It is important to keep ratings news in perspective.

"Heroes" still won the 18-49 demo.

And given the awful experiences this season with serial programs, I would be pretty sure it will go straight through next season.

Black Family Channel to Shut Down
African-American-Targeted Cable Network to Exitt April 30
By R. Thomas Umstead Multichannel News 4/24/2007

After eight years, Atlanta-based Black Family Channel will shut down operations April 30, according to sources close to the network.

The 16 million-subscriber network -- co-owned by lawyer Willie Gary, former baseball star Cecil Fielder, entertainer Marlon Jackson, cable veteran Alvin James and former heavyweight boxing champ Evander Holyfield -- offered African-American targeted, family friendly programming, overseen by actor/producer Robert Townsend.

Despite its star power and its unique positioning -- along with BET and TV One -- as a national network targeting African-American audiences, the network was unable to secure significant cable and satellite distribution to remain in business, according to sources.

Gospel Music Channel is negotiating with BFC to take over its carriage deals with cable operators, according to sources close to both networks. Gospel executives declined comment.

BFC executives confirmed negotiations with Gospel and said, It is not closing its doors, but would not elaborate further.

Sad on my part, but never even heard of that channel. Hope they find a way to keep it viable.

NCIS Feud Erupts! Harmon to Walk?
By Michael Ausiello TV Guide April 24, 2007

Multiple sources confirm that Mark Harmon is embroiled in a tense standoff with NCIS executive producer Don Bellisario, with Harmon apparently threatening to walk. CBS declined comment, but an insider says Harmon has been unhappy for some time over Bellisario's "chaotic management style," and simply became fed up.

"Mark's been working every single day, 16 hours a day," whispers one source. "[Don] tries to micro-manage everything. Script pages get faxed to the set at the last minute, and Mark is tired of dealing with the huge impact that makes on his life. He doesn't have time for his family or anything when he's working hours like that."

All I can say is Nooooooooooooo, say it ain't so McGee. I have fallen in love with that show, it is currently my favorite show on TV right now.

MNT Scraps Upfront Presentation
and Tuesday Telenovelas
By Jim Benson Broadcasting & Cable 4/24/2007

MyNetworkTV (MNT) has eliminated the possibility of both a formal upfront presentation to advertisers next month in New York and a return to telenovela programming on Tuesdays after the May sweeps.

MNT President Greg Meidel compared the move to scrap a formal upfront presentation, which the mini-network held last year to hype its failed all-telenovela strategy that began in September, to cable networks like Fox sibling FX foregoing splashy shows in favor of smaller, one-on-one meetings with media buyers.

One size doesn't fit all, Meidel says, adding that he believes MNT's story is better told on a personal level.

Bob Cesa, executive VP of ad sales for Twentieth TV and MNT, will lead the mini-network in individual meetings being scheduled with media buyers in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles starting the middle of next week and continuing through the upfronts.

It's an unconventional approach because MNT has an unconventional style, Cesa says.

A formal upfront presentation wasn't necessary since MNT plans to leave four nights of its recently revamped schedule intact next season, according to Meidel.

After arriving in January, Meidel did away with all but two nights of telenovelas beginning in March. International Fight League's IFL Battleground mixed martial arts bouts have boosted household ratings, as well as young men and women demos, on Mondays and Saturdays (where reruns air). MNT has also done better with theatrical movies airing on Thursdays and Fridays

Meidel intends to install more reality on the remaining two nights, starting with Tuesdays in the fall and Wednesdays when the remaining two telenovelas end in the fourth quarter. MNT is in discussions with reality producers such as Mark Burnett, John Langley and Bruce Nash.

After announcing in April that it would install a number of specials, including many with scantily clad women, during the May sweeps (starting early with tonight's Hawaiian Tropic International Beauty Pageant and Ujena Bikini Jam), Meidel says it would have been confusing to return to telenovelas in Juneespecially after ad buyers have already expressed their satisfaction with the changes.

We made the decision to do it now rather than wait to fall, he says.

MNT will announce its new reality projects for June within the next two weeks.

So be sure to check in to the Hot Off The Press thread from now and throughout the Upfront announcements next month for complete coverage of what we'll be seeing starting in September.

Weekly Nielsen Notebook
New, old hits reeling with all-time lows
By Paul J. Gough The Hollywood Reporter

NEW YORK -- It was a tough week for the broadcast networks, with several big-time shows hitting season or series lows.

The decline hit shows all over the schedule: ABC's "Ugly Betty" posted its lowest number ever in adults 18-49, as did CBS' "Shark," NBC's "My Name Is Earl" and three Fox shows: "The War at Home" and the venerable "King of the Hill" and "The Simpsons." ABC's "Desperate Housewives" tied its record low set on Easter Sunday.

CBS' "CSI: Miami," Fox's "24" and Tuesday's edition of Fox's "American Idol" fell to season lows.

Fox ended up winning the week in viewers and 18-49.

The week started off with ABC winning Monday night on the strength of "Dancing With the Stars" (18.9 million, 5.1/13), with "24" (11.3 million, 4.3/10) hitting the lowest adults 18-49 rating of the 2006-07 season and "CSI Miami" (15.4 million, 4.8/12) posting its lowest viewership all season.

Tuesday was roundly won by Fox despite the lowest mark this season for "American Idol" (26.5 million, 10.2/36). "House" (22.4 million, 9.1/22) beat the "Dancing With the Stars" results show (16.5 million, 4.2/10). Fox also won Wednesday with another episode of "American Idol" (28.9 million, 11.2/28), which saw the departure of Sanjaya. ABC's "Lost" (12.1 million, 5.3/14) halted its recent declines at 10 p.m.

Thursday was won by ABC, headlined by "Grey's Anatomy" (21.1 million, 8.7/23), which had its second-lowest adults 18-49 rating of the season. The night was dotted with shows posting all-time lows: "Ugly Betty" (9.5 million, 3.0/9), "Shark" (12.5 million, 3.0/9) and "My Name Is Earl" (7.1 million, 3.0/10). "ER" (9.3 million, 3.8/11) wasn't a low in adults 18-49, but "CSI" (12.4 million, 3.2/8) was low for a repeat. "Survivor: Fiji" did a 4.5/13 in the demo, but its 13.3 million viewers was a season low.

Fox Sports won Saturday in the adults 18-49 demo with its NASCAR Nextel Cup telecast of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 (7 million, 2.7/9).

Sunday saw "Desperate Housewives" (15.9 million, 6.1/15) lead ABC to a win in viewership and the demo despite equaling its lowest-ever demo rating. Numbers for "The Amazing Race" (8.7 million, 2.8/8) also were its lowest so far this season, while "The Simpsons" (6.5 million, 3.0/9) neared its 400th episode with its lowest-rated original ever. NBC's "The Apprentice: Los Angeles" (8 million, 3.2/8), on the other hand, finished its run ahead of its prior season average.

Ratings for the week ending Sunday were released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

For the week, Fox averaged 10.3 million viewers and a 3.9/12 in adults 18-49, followed by CBS (9.6 million, 2.6/7), ABC (9.5 million, 3.3/9), NBC (6.2 million, 2.1/6) and the CW (3 million, 1.3/3).

Veronica Mars would be a perfect fit for USA. Especially as an 8pm lead in to their crime Friday. Ratings would still probably be low but it would be a solid lineup.

You can bet on that.
I have never seen one episode of FNL and I am sooo hoping it gets renewed. If it does (and I think it will), then they will have one buyer of their season 1 DVD set and a new viewer of season 2. Not watching FNL is one of my worst tv watching blunders of my life. (It ranks #2 behind watching Reunion on Fox last season)

Barton, Upton Disturbed By Martin's Cable Agenda
By John Eggerton Broadcasting & Cable 4/24/2007

A pair of Republican lawmakers have asked Republican FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to lay off the cable industry when it comes to "additional, unnecessary and burdensome regulations."

Joe Barton (R-Tex.) and Fred Upton R- Mich.), the former chairs of the House Energy & Commerce Committee and Telecommunications Subcommittee wrote Martin on Tuesday saying they are "disturbed that with respect to the cable industry, you appear to be making proposals that are leading the Commission precisely down the road of intrusive regulation when it is least justified."

They are particularly concerned with Martin's push for a la carte as a way to reduce prices and boost parent's control over content.

They also cite Martin's support for mandatory cable carriage of TV station's multicast digital signals, a new plan to require cable to carry TV stations in both digital and analog after the DTV transition, his insistence that the FCC hold to its July 1 deadline for banning integrated cable set-top boxes, reports he plans to reimpose a 30% national cap on one cable company's subs, and plans to allow stations to lease digital capacity to women and minorities, who would then get mandatory cable carriage for the channels they create.

The legislators also urge the commission to extend the video franchise reforms it adopted for telephone companies getting into video to the incumbent cable companies already delivering it in great quantities.

I guess the cable PAC is on the move since no one was listening the other way.

Bellisario should be well aware that, if it comes to a standoff between the star of a show and the creator/producer, the former always wins (unless there's a sex/alcohol/crime involved) and the latter gets sent packing. Remember Quincy (Jack Klugman got the creator of that show fired so that Klugman could use his Quincy character as a soapbox to condem all of society's ills)? CBS would can Bellisario in a second if there was even a remote chance Harmon would quit and drag down the ratings of one of the few network series that is "American Idol" proof.

I just hope something gets worked out, I've only recently discovered NCIS, but I do enjoy the show and it looked like a slam dunk for renewal. I'm not sure I could imagine the show without Jethro. I'm really naive as to what makes a show tick, but how important to the show is Bellisario?

Speaking of NCIS, it's on now, cya later.

I am not sure CBS is in a position fire Bellisario.

Anyhow, it NCIS IS ending its fourth season, when stars traditionally get a little antsy -- especially with a show that is "American Idol" proof. And extra publicity at sweeps (and pre-Upfronts) time is always helpful.

I know for a fact that Harmon is a great guy and a class act, but I am still not sure I would take Ausiello's report without a handful (not just a few grains) of salt.

The Season's Final Month
Will Flower With Finales, Cliffhangers
By Robert Bianco USA TODAY

We've reached the May Sweeps, a time for see-you-in-September cliffhangers from shows that are coming back and we're-outta-here goodbyes from shows that aren't. It's jam-packed; USA TODAY leads you through the May maze.

April 26
30 Rock, NBC, 9 ET/PT (Thursday)
Raines, NBC, 9 ET/PT (Friday)
The sweeps kick off with two early farewells, one of them final. 30 Rock wraps up with a special episode featuring fabulous Broadway diva Elaine Stritch, which should be a great setup for the show's fall return. No such luck for Raines, which pours out its last hour Friday.

May 3
My Name Is Earl, NBC, 8 ET/PT
Those jokers at NBC are spicing up more exactly, smelling up Earl with a "scratch and sniff" episode, which sounds like fun. Unfortunately, they're also "super-sizing" the whole schedule, including a 67-minute ER, which sounds like considerably less fun. Not that it matters: Most people will likely watch the two-hour Grey's Anatomy (ABC, 9).

May 6
The Amazing Race, CBS, 8 ET/PT
This "all-star" version of the Race has been less amazing than a mistake. But if you've been watching this long, you probably want to see who wins. Or at 9, tune to NBC for a special look back at SNL in the '90s.

May 7
Drive, Fox, 8 ET/PT
Well, that was fast which I guess is only fitting. Fox's cross-country car race comes to a sudden stop with what it hopes is a cliffhanger, and not just a plunge off the TV cliff.

May 10
Without a Trace, CBS, 10 ET/PT
Trace ends its season on the night where it belongs. Welcome back, old friend. Where have you been?

May 13
7th Heaven, CW, 8 ET/PT
The family soap meets its maker after a long run. The run was a year longer than it should have been, but loyal fans will still want to say goodbye.

May 14
King of Queens, CBS, 9 ET/PT
Speaking of long runs and late goodbyes, CBS' working-class, worker-bee sitcom signs off after nine seasons. Find it hard to believe the show lasted that long? They probably do, too.

May 16
The Price is Right Spectacular, CBS, 8 ET/PT
If anyone deserves a salute for longevity, it's Bob Barker. He gets two this week: Wednesday's Spectacular and Thursday's Bob Barker: A Celebration of 50 Years on Television.

May 17
Ugly Betty, ABC, 8 ET/PT
It's the last Thursday of the season, meaning you'll also be taking leave of the night's biggest hits, Grey's and CSI. But considering the ride so far, you just know Betty has one of the year's wildest ends in store.

Jack's dreariest day ends. We know he'll prevail over the bad guys. Whether he prevails over Heroes (NBC, 9) remains to be seen.

Veronica Mars, CW, 8 ET/PT
Goodbyes can be tough even when the time is right for parting. Like the two-hour finale of Veronica Mars, a great show that has sadly run its short course.

May 23
American Idol, Fox, 8 ET/PT
Lost, ABC, 9 ET/PT
Not an easy choice: Idol winner or the two-hour finale of Lost? I'll be Lost, but most of you will be running on Idol.

House Leaders Back Cable in FCC Fight
Barton, Upton Denounce Martin's Support for a la Carte Regulations
By Steve Donohue Multichannel News 4/24/2007

Two key leaders in the House of Representatives are denouncing Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin's call for mandated a la carte programming tiers and other regulations that could hurt cable operators.

In a letter sent Wednesday to Martin, Reps. Joe Barton (R-Mich.)., House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman, and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, also told the FCC chairman they are concerned that he is circulating proposals for multicast must-carry, which could require operators to deploy digital set-tops in every home.

Reports indicate that the dual-carriage proposal also implicates the deployment of cable set-top boxes into consumers' homes. That is something that not all consumers want and a proposition made more expensive by the integrated set-top box ban, Barton and Upton wrote.

The two representatives also scolded Martin for revisiting a possible 30% horizontal cable-system-ownership cap -- an idea that they noted was shot down by a Federal Appeals Court in 2001.

In a noteworthy lobbying achievement for the cable industry -- which has encouraged pro-competition policies -- Barton and Upton told Martin the best approach to regulation is to ensure that free markets flourish.

We are disturbed that with respect to the cable industry, you appear to be marking proposals that are leading the commission precisely down the road of intrusive regulation when it is least justified, the two representatives wrote.

Asked for a response to the letter Tuesday, an FCC spokesman said, We are reviewing it.

More Law & Order turmoil?
Sam Waterston predicts co-star Fred Thompson will run for presidency
By Hal Boedeker Orlando Sentinel Television Critic his TV Guy blog April24, 2007

It is uncertain about whether NBC's "Law & Order" will be renewed. But Sam Waterston told CNN that he expects co-star Fred Thompson to run for president. Wolf Blitzer asked Waterston about the possibility of Thompson's throwing his hat into the presidential ring.

"I think that is going to happen," Waterston said Tuesday.

Waterston described the actors' relationship as "friendly, friendly."

"He's a good man, a very nice man, and he's been very, very straightforward with me all the time," Waterston said of the former Republican senator.

NEW YORK -- It was a tough week for the broadcast networks, with several big-time shows hitting season or series lows.

And it continued with Heroes. I also read on Gateworld that the Stargates were down 30% from the previous week.

In other words, everything is down.

And I can easily explain it: It's been damn nice outside the past week and a half for much of the country. 70s outside after it being so cold, people just don't want to watch TV.

Well then, they should have planned ahead and bought a new plasma for the patio.

Passions heads to DirecTV
Segments to begin airing this fall
By Josef Adalian Variety
NBC is closing in on a deal that will keep sudser "Passions" alive via an unusual outlet: DirecTV.

In what would be its biggest-ever original programming initiative, satellite provider is set to acquire original episodes of the soap opera from NBC U TV Studio. Segs would likely begin airing this fall, after the sudser ends its run on NBC.

There will be some changes, however.

Instead of five days per week, "Passions" will air only four times per week. It's also expected the show's budget will be reduced further to accommodate the different business model.

Neither NBC nor DirecTV would comment, but insiders said a deal could be finalized by week's end. It's unclear how much DirecTV will pay NBC, but a typical sudser costs a little more than $1 million per week to produce for network TV.

DirecTV has been edging further into the original content business, airing several first-run skeins on what it calls the 101. It's unclear if the company will program "Passions" on that channel or use the sudser as part of a larger programming initiative.

Peacock said earlier this year that it was canceling "Passions" after an eight-year run on the net.

HBO Films well-armed for Pacific
By Nellie Andreeva The Hollywood Reporter April 25, 2007

HBO Films has given the green light to "The Pacific," the long-gestating 10-hour miniseries from executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg that serves as the follow-up to the duo's Emmy-winning 2001 HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers."

Filming on the epic, which HBO Films is producing in association with Playtone and DreamWorks Television, is set to begin this summer in Australia.

A companion piece to the World War II saga "Brothers," "Pacific" tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines -- Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge -- across the vast canvas of the Pacific, from the first clash with the Japanese in the jungles of Guadalcanal to the triumphant return home after V-J Day.

Production will be based at Melbourne Central City Studios in Melbourne, Victoria, with filming set to take place in Melbourne, where U.S. troops camped in 1943, and Far North Queensland.

"We're proud to be reuniting with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg to complete the story of the American combat experience of World War II," HBO Films president Colin Callender said. "This epic miniseries is based on the true stories of three Marines whose experiences in the Pacific embodied the unique nature of that theater of war, and dramatize how it profoundly differed from the European front. "

"Pacific" is based on the books "With the Old Breed" by Sledge and "Helmet for My Pillow" by Leckie, as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers and Hugh Ambrose, son of "Brothers" author Stephen E. Ambrose, who died in 2002. Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries.

During the summer months there are only 2 shows I watch. Big Brother and Rockstar . Maybe this summer there will be something else to catch my eye.

I seem to really get my moneys worth out of Netflix during the summer, thats for sure.

About time. It must be almost two or three years since I first heard of "Pacific" (I think it was through an IMDB listing in 2004). Band of Brothers was so terrific, I can't wait to see this series.
