MavTV to Launch HD Feed

Men's-Targeted Cable Network Expanding Internationally, As Well

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 7/10/2007 3:22:00 PM

MavTV will add an HD feed to its growing stable of services beginning in the first quarter of 2008.

The move was made since the vast majority of the network's original content is being shot in HD and interest both domestically and internationally in HD programming targeting men has been in great demand.

The independent network has been marketing its men's brand and original series internationally in markets such as Australia, New Zealand and now India. The original HD content being produced by MavTV is also being snapped up by international distributors eager to reach the HD consumer throughout the world.

In addition, MavTV is very close to finalizing an international distribution agreement for the men's brand that will cover five continents. MavTV president Steve Smith said the bottom line is we have some exciting male content on the air and international markets and U.S. distributors seem very interested in what we have to offer. Moving into a full HD signal will only help us grow the brand faster internationally and in the United States.

MavTV is an independently owned cable network and video brand created specifically to appeal to the interests of men. Launched Oct. 1, 2004, the network features a mix of original sports and gaming programming, as well as general content related to the male demographic.

The network can be seen in more than 55 key markets via cable in the United States, and it has distribution agreements on mobile platforms in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and India.

This channel, along with others like Wealth HD, seems to exist only for providers who are looking to boost the number of "HD" channels on their lineups. RCN recently added those two for no apparent reason other than to reach the 100 mark for HD.

Thankfully TWC NE Ohio hasn't seen this channel or Wealth TV. And I hope they never come or are far off after better options have been added.

I've always thought MAV-TV had something to do with Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks. Obviously, that's not the case. But ever since this channel has been listed in the Dish Network EPG, and it's been there for quite some time, I've never seen any programming listed for the channel. Very strange.

I like what I've seen about Mav TV on their website.

Time Warner almost picked it up with Smithsonian to replace HDNet but that has been stalled.

If BrightHouse picks it up on the $6 HD pack, I might buy that package.

Since this channel was added when TWC royally screwed their customers, let's make a topic. MAV TV was added in place of HD Net Movies. The first thing I noticed about this channel is the picture quality is HORRIBLE. Several shows I've checked on this channel appear to be very bad HD or even 480i widescreen. Even FOX Digital Widescreen programming looks better than this channel. Poker was on in "HD", which looked like a program I had seen on other channels in much better HD, MAVTV looked like 480i widescreen. Another program looked like zoomed SD letterbox since there was a little black bar showing at the top of the screen and the edge looked blurry and unclean. Other lowlights of this channel include the block of Paid Programming in the morning, Paid programming on a PAY TIER CHANNEL.

This really makes me miss HD Net. HD Net always had beautiful, clear 100% HD picture as well as much better programming than MAVTV. No more latenight Asian MMA!

This is the worst "HD" I have seen in some time! Does TWC actually think this garbage is really HDTV?
-If Time Warner Cable thinks MAVTV "HD" is worth being in the HD package, it just tells you about the "mindset" of TWC corporate...what an insult.

Ive yet to see ANY HD on this channel, including any racing...it looks like its just an endless cycle of repurposed programming from other sources...if it was in HD, it would at least make sense as an eye-candy HD channel like inHD in the old days...but its nothing but STRETCHED SD crap. This channel should be embarrassed for even existing.

Totally agree. The only thing that is HD on this channel is the MAV bug in the upper right corner! What a poor substitute for HDNET and HDNET MOVIES.

Agreed, it just shows you the "mindset" of Time Warner Cable executives and gives you and example of what they think HDTV is (if they even watch HDTV).

Video of TWC executive board meeting : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdR8Q...layer_embedded

After TWC switched the pristine picture quality of HDNET/HDNET Movies for the rabbit-ear SD quality MavTV, I dropped the HD pak. Bad PQ and horrible programming.
