Yeah, i know. I tuned in last week since i was waiting for Curb Your Enthusiasm to go on. That series is a mess in MHO. It's not just the explicit sex either. It is just plain dull in MHO.

it's borderline pornographic, except in pornos, the woman doesn't look like she wants to commit suicide while giving the guy a HJ.

I guess the idea is to show real relationships, warts and all. But all they're doing is showing the warts, all the warts, and nothing but the warts. Yikes. Who wants to see that? My sister is a shrink. She gets PAID to sit through stuff like this.

That is no fun. You're husband would not like it? I can understand you're son and all.

Another good ep tonite (maybe I'm just in a good mood; really liked "Weeds" tonight as well ). Anyway, more interesting twists. And looks like more for next week, as well.

First, I agree that Hank was only dreaming of going to bed with Karen. Recall that the next morning he said something to her about nearly having got it on the night before.

Californication is now the best written show on TV, it seems to me. Near the end of last night's episode, we hear Mia, in voice over, reading from what I thought was the story she had written, which Hank had agreed to help her with. This happened as Hank's one night stand from earlier has returned Hank's guitar and records and is coming into his place for renewed sexual congress. After writing about Hank's sadness, Mia's final words are:

Here we are at the edge of the world, she thought, the very edge of Western civilization, and all of us are so desperate to feel something, anything, that we keep falling into each other and f**king our way toward the end of days.

What a way to sum up Hank! Very smart, very sweet, very sad.

I can agree with that, but, then again, there really isn't any competition. 2 more weeks...

After reading this blog post about the amount of advertisements in this weeks episode of Californication, I decided to go back to the tape and see how this week's (episode 4) scheduling compared with week 1.

Okay, so this was week 1:

One of the writers on the show must be a Slayer fan - Hank's three books: God Hates Us All, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss are all titles of Slayer albums!

Boy, the hyperbole about this show. I guess something must be lost on me. I like it, but at this point, that's it. I don't see the great writing so far. The lead is still so smarmy, and the dialogue too hip and cute (most of the time) for me to care more about most of the folks. It's one of those "it's so uncool to be normal" shows that, while still very interesting to me, doesn't rate at all the heaps of praises. I seem to be in the minority here though it seems ..

Oh well It's just different strokes for different folks. I do think it's a very smart show. The adults talk to one another "as adults" and I love that Hank does not talk down to his daughter. But i understand what you mean. I think i feel the same way about Weeds. I watch and enjoy it, but don't find it all as wonderful as many do.

Got this in my google alerts.

Californication
One of my first posts on this blog was plugging the writing of Charles Bukowski, who is an amazing writer and makes me feel good about being the low-life alcoholic I am.

Anyway, I'm pleased to announce that Hollywood has basically ripped off Buckowski and made it into a show called Californication. For those of you who don't read stuff that isn't downloaded off some website, this TV show does a pretty decent job of adapting Buckowski's work.

The character of Hank Chinaski (Moody on the TV show) is pretty much one of the best characters in literature, and for some reason totally reminds me of myself.

I don't see the greatness either. What I do see is that it seems like the first few eps were intentionally full of sex and nudity to hook in the male 18-34 demographic, and now we just get 100% dramedy. I'm not a fan of cheap ploys to draw in audiences. It reminds me of misleading trailers to make you think a movie is one thing, when in fact it is something else. A few examples of this are "Riding in Cars with Boys" (Trailers and ads billed it as a comedy, but it was far from it) and more recently, "Man of the Year" in which the ads/trailers make you think the whole movie is about a Jon Stewart type getting elected president (And makes you think Laura Linney is his first lady, not some lady who worked at some software company caught up in a scandal which is the actual focus of the movie).

Can't we have every episode have some sex and nudity? After all, practically every episode of Sex and the City had sex and nudity (Except from that prude Sarah Jessica Parker) and had its great writing and all that. Since Californication is about relationships and sex, why can't we have the best of both worlds?

I never knew it took T and A to make a program better There are still 7 eps, so maybe all you guys that need the boobs will get some What's the big deal anyway. I'd rather have good writing. I watched Sex and the City and there were many eps that didn't show nudity. Sometimes in MHO less is more
