I'm getting horrible macro blocking and freezing during this broadcast via Dish Network Nashville feed. As a matter of fact, the last few golf tourneys have been bad, but not unwatchable like this.

Anyone else seeing problems?

I was watching a bit on my laptop via OTA Pinnacle PCTV while here in Portland. Looked great.

It looked great OTA on WBTV (Charlotte NC) which doesn't do any multicasting. On the other hand, WSPA (Spartanburg SC) dropped back to SD for most of the afternoon to show weather alerts along the top of the screen, and their locally-generated SD is pretty crappy even for SD.

It was just fine for me. Occasional micro blocking from handheld cameras whe they were moving them.

Yeah, the handhelds sometimes have problems. I think it is a signal problem between the camera and the tower antenna. Have you ever been to a tournament? Those cameramen, and women, work hard.

Looking pretty good watching OTA on WCTV-DT (CBS station in the Tallahassee area), despite dropouts every few seconds (WCTV's transmitter is about 65 miles from Albany).

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt...

Thank you CBS for an excellent all HD golf season. To bad we have to deal with NBC's SD hand helds for the final three weeks of the "Playoffs" and the Presidents Cup. At least those of us with VSGLF-HD can get the Fall Finish in complete HD.

As usual when I watch one of CBS's productions covering a PGA golf tournament, I was both amazed and grateful. They have the best on-air talent in the business and their video is peerless. No other network is in the same league. I was grateful for another reason, too: Rory Sabatini didn't win.

I think one of the most interesting things they did this year was to have Gary McCord working in the control booth (for about an hour during the third round of a different tournament) showing how they work behind the scenes. I give kudos to those people trying to monitor what looked about 200 screens - that's some talent to have. You also got a look at one of the screens showing the hi-def and the markings they use on the screen to keep things in the 4:3 safe zone.

Well, next tournament for CBS is end of January 2008 - Buick Open at Torrey Pines. A lot of people will be focusing on that (and most if not all of the top talent will be there) because the South Course will be the site of the US Open in June.

Anyone compare the simultaneous true-HD (non-SD-camera) shots from NBC's San Francisco amateur match coverage? Seemed the CBS images were noticeably better, overall, than the best shots from NBC. If so, maybe there are too many variables to pin down the reason.

Here, the CBS feed was from just north of NYC to WCBS-DT, with no subchannels, then to NYC's TWC via fiber, versus the cross-country NBC feed. NBC does multicast here, reducing the max bit rate for true 1080i. But since I don't encounter, via cable, the MPEG breakups with motion local OTA viewers complain of, I've speculated TWC might be getting a full-bit-rate feed from NBC (before multicast encoding). Maybe not. -- John
