Charter Eyes More HD Via Motorola SDV Rollout

MSO Previously Used BigBand's Switched Digital Video Solution

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/9/2010 8:22:14 PM

Charter Communications plans to expand its HD channel count using switched digital video gear from Motorola, targeting SDV deployments across 60% of its footprint by the end of 2010.

Previously, Charter has used BigBand Networks for some SDV deployments. The MSO did not indicate how much additional HD programming it intends to deliver as a result of the expansion of switched digital video.

"Our goal is to deliver value to our customers, offering the best choices in quality content, including high-definition programming and fast, reliable Internet speeds," said Marwan Fawaz, Charter's executive vice president of operations and chief technology officer, in a statement. "Motorola's proven switched digital video solution allows us to meet this growing demand for HD and speed."

Charter has already deployed Motorola's SDV services in North Carolina, Missouri and Nevada, with more launches planned for later this year.

According to Motorola, Charter's deployments bring total operator commitments for the Motorola SDV solution to more than 30 million homes passed. Switched digital video improves bandwidth utilization by transmitting only those channels that are being watched in a specific neighborhood at any given time.

Charter, the No. 4 cable operator in the U.S., had 5.0 million basic video subscribers (of which 3.16 million were digital) as of the end of March.

Are any new HD channels coming to Smyrna, GA? We have very few compared to Comcast in the rest of Atlanta and compared to Sat, and frankly, it's getting frustrating.

Does Charter handle EAS alerts as poorly elsewhere as they do here in Madison, or are we just "lucky?" (I'm guessing the latter -- the local system is extremely poorly run.)

We had numerous tornado warnings last night that generated Emergency Alert System (EAS) alerts. I think it's great that Charter relays these alerts and breaks into normal programming. The problem is that the head-end does not return to normal programming after relaying the alert. Sometimes, it was like 15 minutes of a blank "Charter Communications" screen before normal programming resumed. So, if you wanted to watch the local TV stations' coverage of the storms, tough luck! I ended up switching over to antenna so that I could watch the storm coverage on WISC.

It wasn't just at my house -- several co-workers also mentioned having the same issue. And in the past, we've also had programming interrupted for alerts one or two counties away that do not affect Madison, but hey, why buy the EAS equipment for all those remote systems when you can just buy one, put it in Madison and annoy over half your customers? Kinda like the way they've cheaped out on ESPN HD receivers so we can't watch the Cubs, Sox or Cards when they are on ESPN HD because the Madison ESPN HD receivers feed systems many miles away that are in the blackout area. Thanks, Charter. Job well done as usual!

Are there more coming after that? ESPNU? Comedy Central HD? Others? Maybe UMatter can add some insight?

Sorry to be a pest, but I'm trying to decide between buying a Moxi, which commits me to cable for a few years to justify the cost, and getting DirectTV. My DVRs from Charter are always full with my wife's and kids' selections, and I need another solution.

This was brought to the forefront after Charter informed me over the weekend that they had added great new HD offerings though EPIX on demand, but I would have to pay $10 per month for it. I got pretty annoyed because I have long felt that Charter's HD offerings are slim compared to other cable cos and satellite. However, I'm trying to make an informed decision rather than a snap one out of frustration.

If I could get satellite, I probably would. I only watch HD and Charter definitely needs to step up in channel count (which probably involves dumping a lot of analog channels or adding SDV). I'd like to see at least one news channel in HD, ESPN News and ESPN-U, Comedy Central and Travel Channel to start. If I got those I'd be relatively happy. I keep Charter because I appreciate the personal service of guys like UMatter2Charter who hangs out around here. I wouldn't even consider AT&T because I've had nothing but bad experiences with that company!

I'm in 29607 in the Upstate. Had Comedy Central HD, CNN HD, ESPNU HD, and several others while I was on Time Warner before moving to Greenville. Would certainly like to get those back!

We will be adding Disney HD and Science Channel HD on 7/28. We hope to launch additional HD by end of year but that is TBD at this point. Currently there is no plan/timeline in place for adding 3D content.

Still waiting on info for everyone else.

For Zip 29379 & 29607, we are looking to add Disney HD in September and Comedy Central HD in December. There are other channels but they're still in negotiations.

A precursor to adding more HD content in Atascadero is the completion of our Switched Digital/Simultrans initiative. A more reasonable time period for adding more content will be early 2011.

14 months between adding HD channels. Nov 2009 was the last time, now we have to wait until early 2011. How do you guys keep customers. My guess is because we don't have Fios or U-verse in the area yet.

Umatter,
I know you probably don't have an exact #, however what is the average # of channels added after the Switched Digital/Simultrans initiative is in place. And will I need a set-top box for my non-digital tv's in my house.

Don't count on it. Charter implemented SDV months ago for us and they plan on on adding 2 HD channels by the end of the year. So much for using SDV to add HD channels.

I have currently sent these same questions up to our marketing team and there are no current plans to add those channels. I understand that these channels are in high demand and I am sorry that there is no time line set up to get them.

Once we add though we will make sure that everyone knows about it.
