Let them keep 'em. Carrying 5 worthless channels in order to get 2 hrs. of HD a night (in Charlotte, anyway) isn't worth it.

To be fair, PBS tends to have the most valuable sub-channels. I often record programs off the sub-channels of WGBH here in Boston.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but did anyone see the sneak preview of MHD on D*? I believe that it was on from 2am this morning to 8am, or something close to that.

Man, they can bring it on! Just upgraded from our Dtivo box to a couple of HR20-700 units. Loving it, can't wait until more is broadcast in the format. Go for it DTV!

In the SF bay area KQED offered DirecTV it's HD feed, for free, when DirecTV launched local HD carriage here. DirecTV declined, "not at this time" was their response.

To get all the new HD channels:
Is there a requirement to upgrade from the present 3-LNB oval to a new 5-LNB dish ?

So I live in Greensboro, NC and with the rollout of new D* HD networks the first week of Sept. coming along a little more than two months from now what is the status of the RSN's? Currently my RSN's are Fox Sports South, Turner Sports South, and Mid Atlantic Sports Network. So are these going to all be in HD for Sports come Sept? Are all the Hurricanes Hockey Games, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, and Washington Nats Games going to be broadcast in HD? To me the biggest question is whether or not when the Braves play games on TSS if that is going to be in HD? Curious for any input. Thanks.

Yes, all of the RSN's will be in HD on conus, and most likely all home games will be in HD, not sure about the away games though.

I made no such assumption. I verified with DirecTV that there will NOT be any increase in the HD package. You are correct that the sports packages and premium channels cost extra, and I should have clarified that point. But from DirecTV: "There are no plans to increase pricing".

I understand that very well, but there is also a national PBS HD feed.

Yes, those will count toward the 100. I did mention that, even though they were not specifically accounted for in the numbers.

What about this article is optimistic? It sounds to me like they WILL get to 100 ... but using some "sneakery" that I'm sure most did not expect.

Thank you for your feedback.

How many people care whether it's 100 or 50 or whatever? As long as they give us everything that's available that's all we can ask for.

Go here: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global...ssetId=2300004

This is what is available now in HD and these will go CONUS on the new sat. Anything not on this list either isn't available in HD yet or doesn't have a deal with DirecTV. You can bet that since DirecTV is all about sports that if an RSN is available in HD and they can carry it, they will.

It will be hard for anyone to provide Washington Nationals games in HD since MASN doesn't produce them in HD.

My understanding is only Fox Sports South has the Braves HD games. TBS and Sportssouth games are not HD this year.

With as many cable channels headquartered here in Atlanta, you would think we'd see an improvement. Oh well..I guess that is Time Warner.

SportSouth has been showing games on channel 96. I watched the Tigers and Braves and National and Braves the other night via SportSouth. FSN is also showing in HD. Its TBSHD that has stop showing HD feeds of the game!

1080p and PS3 is a Match made in HD Heaven!

I care when companies advertise what they end up not delivering. If they said, "we will carry all available HD channels" then that's fine. But if at the end of 2007, they say "we promised you 100 channels, but there's only 30 available" I think they owe something to their customers.

Put it this way. If you gave me $100 to pick up 10 pizzas for you, then came back and said "sorry, they only had 5", I'd owe you some $.

Its a lot easier to get 5 pizza's than it is to get 50 HD channels. Sure I'd rather have 100, but if we get 50 ligit channels, thats a definite start.

Let's just hope the July 6th launch date holds.

They'll have no problem getting to 100 if they are including NFLST, MLBEI and PPV channels.

You are missing the point, though. There is no standard definition for what the word "channel" means (while there is a standard definition for the word "network" -- notice that they did NOT use that word). For all practical purposes, a channel is any video feed associated with a number. There has been no argument over the years when service providers counted the SD and corresponding HD channels as separate channels, even though they carry the same programming. There has been no argument over the years when service providers counted three public access channels as three channels, when in reality one is used 24/7 for classified ads presented by the township -- the same "programming" presented in a loop, all day long. That's still a "channel". There has also not been any concerns raised in past years about counting "channels" that are only operating part of the day. That was just accepted as the nature of that "channel". And if they put "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", On Demand, on "Channel 429", the same "programming" presented On Demand (which is even BETTER than in a loop), all day long, then that's legitimately a "channel" too.

Always be sure that before you get angry you make sure that your own casual attention to what you're getting angry about is not the cause of your own consternation.

Agreed, but if D* advertise 100 then 50 means we didn't get our money's worth. If D* advertises 150 channel capacity, it's misleading but at least it may be correct. If 100 HD channels includes expensive NFL/MLB/PPV add-ons that were not included in the total before...again not great, but ok.

A car manufacturer was once forced to change their advertising when they said their windows were (I forget the exact percentage) 70% quieter. The implication was that they were 70% quieter than they used to be. When asked to explain, the manufacturer said the windows were 70% quieter...closed compared to open.

The point is that companies who make incorrect or misleading promises don't deserve our business.

True, but it seems that some people are looking to be misled -- looking to be disappointed. Some folks simply formulate their expectations internally, rather than basing them on explicit, unequivocal promises.
