I know it is an unfair comparison, but I watched Reaper tonight and damn near pissed myself laughing. Chuck... not so much. Chuck was pitched outright as a comedy, and it is not.

The truth is, Chuck is a show that needs to make some decisions about itself. I can't escape comparing it to the movie True Lies, because they have similar premises and similar views of how to approach their premises.

One of the shortcomings of True Lies was that the first half of the movie is a bit loving parody and a bit spy comedy. Then the second half is outright, Die Hard type explosions.

Chuck kind of jerkily bounces back and forth between the two impulses and does it without warning. The show's producers need to make a decision about the show, because it does not work well enough to justify not watching something else.

If they want a drama with heavy comedy mixed in, they better ask Joss Whedon how that all ends (Adam Baldwin reports that Firefly isn't on the air anymore). Which means the show needs to suck it up and become a comedy, as advertised.

I'll give it a couple more episodes. The premise hasn't grabbed me yet.

Well, I hated True Lies thought it was rather lame. But, I must say I was amused by Chuck, and comparing the plot holes in Chuck. And comparisons to Heros? (Teleported through time recently?) they are just TV shows. I like how he sells windows PCs, but, he has Macs at home
But, there was some great stuff hidden away. Anyone catch the 'Astro Diapers' adult diapers with a astronaut on the box that he walked by in the Costco/Sam's Club analog?
Too bad their on opposite networks or I could see a Reaper/Chuck cameo (in the background certainly) or other in-jokes.

Well, fwiw, I enjoyed it as did my 12 year old son (for what *that's* worth).
I did get a kick out of some of those background jokes such as the astro diapers.

On a related note, how about that actual diapers commercial (huggies) with the little song that ends, "even astronauts need to poop" or something like that. Intentional? Coincidental? Off topic?

NBC is apparently convinced that the big thing that made Heroes click was the presence of a nubile blonde chick. Hence, why so many of their shows now have one front and center.

Didn't like it as much as I hoped but it's worth a second episode at least. Can't really see it going anywhere for too long. Looked great in HD though.

Yeah, cause Heroes was the first show in TV history to have such a character.

These things go in phases, though. There are stretches where they think you can't have an attractive, young actress without turning off the female audience.

Also, we had a long stretch where non-traditional beauty was popular.

I think we're getting to a point where the feminist critique of TV has finally realized women can be attractive and men can be horny without any of that being treated as the end of the world.

Chuck's female handler is actually a pretty decent actress considering the fairly limited material she's working with. I suspect of all the folks involved with the show, she will probably walk away having gained the most.

With some time to digest Chuck vs other shows, I think it is probably going to lose my vote next week. I started watching How I Met Your Mother over the summer and loved it, and I'll probably go back to it if Chuck doesn't pick up.

I donno. I grew up po and had a lot of second-hand computers growing up and ended up playing a lot of older stuff.

I did feel retarded when I was the only person in the room laughing at the joke and then had to explain text-based gaming and how nerd-chic the joke was.

Just got done watching it.

I actually liked it. I thought the plot-line was funny and interesting and DAAYUMMM that woman is HOOOOOOOTTTTT

I didn't really like the way the CIA/NSA people interacted with Chuck sometimes...seemed too TV'ish if that makes sense

Anyway, I will keep watching. I like the acting

Nice to see another Firefly/Serenity alumni has a regular gig on Chuck.
3 other Firefly alumni have their own new regular TV gigs this season too!

Let's see who all is working...

Badger: BSG and BW

Mal: Desperate Housewives

River: The 4400 and Sarah Connor

Zoe: Standoff. I don't think it has been canceled. If so, I will be hurt, because who doesn't want to holler "It's Peter from Office Space and Zoe from Firefly!!"

Wash: Alan Tudyk has had a good run of well-received films, including most recently 3:10 to Yuma.

You know, I got home to see the 15 y.o. girl tuned in to Desperate Housewives for the first ever because Nathan Fillion was on there. "So far he's said Hi and carried some groceries in," she said when I asked if that was why.

Firefly may be the world's leading source of new fan interest in shows, as we all keep desperately hoping the show will just be spontaneously reconstituted if we all wish and watch hard enough.

Yeah, we really do. The funny thing about 'Firefly' is that it seems to be getting more popular over time, especially since "Serenity" hit the big screen. If ever a TV show deserved a second chance at life, this one is it. And, it could work this time.

Maybe if Sci Fi gets sick of lower budget series' with no fan base - they would consider resurrecting it.

The Firefly alumni have an incredible knack for making shows that do not stick. So far I think the healthiest run has been for The 4400, at a brave four whole seasons that somehow get worse but stay on the air. Of course, Stargate: Atlantis will have a long run if history is any guide.

I was a latecomer to Firefly. I barely remember any of the promos for it, although I definitely remember watching the world series that year. After I watched Serenity I was impressed as hell and got the show on DVD.

Obviously, Firefly fans are having serious detox issues. We gave Drive a chance, and that show was dreadful (did Tim Minear ever watch Death Race 2000, Cannonball Run, Smokey and the Bandit, etc.?).

Chuck, I don't think I would have been as disappointed with Chuck as I was if the show had been pitched more accurately. I was expecting something outright funny like Reaper, not so much a Dramedy.

Fox owns the TV rights, so that is unlikely.

Huh? Why does that make it unlikely?

There are many reasons Sci Fi wouldn't consider it, but the fact that the rights are owned by Fox isn't one of them.

Watched Chuck Saturday night. For me it was pretty weak. It has no chance to break into my TV schedule.

Introduce anything new into a system and it increases the odds it will fail. Maybe Fox gets snippy about the price, or maybe decides they agree Firefly needs to come back and decide to screw us twice.

I thought tonight's episode was pretty good. The Wienerlicious fight scene was better than the one in the Bionic Woman last week, that's for sure.
My main complaint was the PQ. It was really grainy over here in Chicagoland.
