So I just signed up for directv, and the installation guy just left. This will be the first time I've had a provider in 6 years. I went ahead and took advantage of their "big deal", and I like it so far. And I'm glad I'll finally be able to watch live Astros and Texans games.

Quick question though: When I watch premium channels in dolby digital, the center channel volume is super low compared to the surrounds/LFE. Does anyone else get this? Any fix other than adjusting levels on my audio reciever? The levels are perfect for bluray/htpc/xbox, I'd hate to have to adjust that level back and forth when switching sources.

MisterClean84,

Make sure your DTV receiver has Dolby Digital Audio turned ON:

Menu => Settings => Audio => Dolby Digital = ON

If that doesn't correct it, it's likely an issue with your AVR. Is your DTV receiver sending digital audio via HDMI, Optical or Coaxial to the AVR? Check your AVR settings for the appropriate digital audio input.

DD is set to on, and it's going through HDMI to my Pioneer VSX-1121k. I've since changed channels (to stars HD from Cinemax HD) and the volume issue isn't nearly as noticeable. So it may have just been the particular movie I was watching, or possibly the channel. Appreciate the help, though.

It's mostly the show or channel. I have watched Whale Wars before where every single speaker had the same level and it was awful. The next episode would be back to normal.

I remember watching a Vikings nfl game years ago where John Madden only talked out of my left rear speaker. The lesson being:

Step 1: Try another channel.

Step 2: Panic, curse alot, report the problem on AVS forums.

All the blue lights are on my receiver...usually that means there was an update.

Anyone know what the update is?

Movies must be OAR, sports and movies must also have 5.1 audio, No EE or NO SALE!

Also under that same menu sequence , you have the choice for surround effects = Low- Medium- High . I like medium

Those are sound effects associated with screen navigation, nothing to do with "surround sound".

According to the list linked above, about 20 by my count (not including regional sports). That's pretty much the same margin they're behind other providers as well (U-verse, Dish, etc.).

Looks like after a short hiatus, local inserts are back. Just noticed it today. On CNN they went to break, started out as a TruGreen commercial then switched to a stretched Academy Sports spot. Went channel up and back and the TruGreen commercial was back.

These days, doing a channel up and than down again can sometimes take an entire commercial break! Okay, an exaggeration, but it feels like it.

That's right forgot about that listing. Looking at it now looks like I would be missing very little by jumping to DirecTV from Comcast. BBC America HD I was looking forward to getting on Comcast until every time I looked at the network they were showing ST:TNG reruns.

Also looks like a few others like E! and Lifetime Movies is missing which is no real loss to me. I'll give those up for HDNet Movies, GolTV HD, and the like.

I have an HR21 hooked up in my basement. I had component going to my projector and hdmi going to the tv behind the projector. Recently, the tv would not receive signal from the D* DVR.

The hdmi on the tv does work, as I hooked up a blu ray to it to test the connection.

So either the hdmi jack on the box has failed, or the new update disabled it maybe?

Any ideas?

If the update disabled it, I can tell you that it disabled my (older) HD television. I purchased a powered HDMI splitter from MonoPrice. It is part MHSP0102B, and is advertised as supporting HDCP. It is a 1 to 2 splitter, but I am using only one of the outputs. It solved my problem, so if that's your problem, this will work for you. It beats unplugging the HDMI cable from your HR21, then plugging it back in again. It was pretty cheap, but I can't remember exactly how much.

Yeah, using an HDMI switch (splitter do the same?) as a generic problem solver for HDMI connections should be a sticky or something I use a 1:2 Monoprice (used as 1:1) switch between DTV receiver and DVDO Edge - tried it between Edge and display, but it works better, reduces problems maybe 80%, directly after the sat box.

I believe the update disabled by receiver on Saturday...but only temporarily.

It wouldn't turn-on. I unplugged it, re-plugged and everything is back to normal.

Thanks guys.

What about this one:

I do not want to have a powered one if I can help it due to lack of outlet space.

The one you linked to is not HDCP compliant, it supports HDCP pass-thru, which means, since your problem is due to a handshake issue between your receiver and the display device, this won't change that. It will be useless. The powered one I mentioned here IS a bit more, at $33.50, but it clearly says it's HDCP compliant, and it is because it works (for me).
