Hour shows were similar; for example ER episodes started at around 46 minutes early in its run but by the series finale regularly ran 42 minutes and change.

The best way to get a more precise measurement would be to check run times of various series on DVD.

On a more BBT-specific note, I have to say that of the female characters, I currently find Raj's girlfriend to be the most attractive.
That's just crazy, at this rate it will be a 10 minute show.

I agree with your thought on Raj's girlfriend.

It's all a matter of fitting more commercials into a thirty minute time slot.

Especially with shows like BBT, paying that many cast members is not cheap.

.
It wouldn't surprise me if they began coaching the cast to speak in voices an octave lower so it will be less noticeable when they start speeding up the playback by 15%...

No need; digital techniques can speed up playback without affecting speech.

TiVO is even including that in their latest software release.

They actually started doing that on some movie and tv shows when they are re-aired, like old seinfeld episodes. I saw a youtube video on it where they played the original and the sped up version next to each other, and you could definitely see a difference

It's all about squeezing that extra 30 seconds of commercial time in there

It is funny that you guys talk about speeding the program up. I used to do that all the time with my old JVC svhs tape player. IIRC it was mostly Charlie Rose. I could watch an hour show in like forty minutes. For something like that, it was great.

Current projector - JVC RS25 and Marantz VP15S1
Future projector - pre-ordered new JVC from AVScience

Some dramas are down this season too - e.g. Blue Bloods under 40 minutes (without opening) twice this season. Hawaii five-0 is bucking the trend though, hitting 43 all season (with opening)...

Amazon shows MacGyver episodes holding up at 46+ minutes from '85 to '92...

Yikes- under 40 minutes? I've been watching a DVD of the old Man From UNCLE which time out at 51 minutes each!

The Tivo version in entertainment in itself.

Take a show like the "Today" show. Where you have some slow talkers and some fast talkers. You probably wouldn't notice the audio being sped up with the slow talkers. With the fast talkers however, it does sound like a tape that's been sped up. Kinda funny.

I do look at drama somewhat differently from comedy. In comedy a minute or two of standalone scenes and jokes, even worthwhile ones, can usually be cut with little noticeable impact. With many dramas plot holes abound, and you have to wonder if something got cut that would have closed a hole. It's also kind of unrealistic to compose plots week after week that unfold at a consistent pace and still fill up exactly 42 minutes, say. So some flexibility can be good - you see that a lot on FX where Justified e.g. might be 39:30 one week and 44:00 the next.

When I watch some of the older shows now they can seem stretched to fill the 48+ minutes. Oftentimes faster pacing and crisper dialog would have been an improvement IMO. After all, Peter Gunn managed to cram a pretty decent story into 25-26 minutes...

‘Big Bang Theory’ back on top among DVR viewers
By Media Life Magazine Staff - Feb. 2, 2016

With midseason hiatus time now over on broadcast TV, CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” has reclaimed its position as one of the top programs among DVR owners.

The Jan. 14 episode of “Big Bang” posted a 5.9 rating among viewers 18-49 with seven-day DVR playback added in, according to Nielsen, up 2.1 ratings points from its original 3.8 live-plus-same-day rating.

That was the most growth of any show during the week ended Jan. 17, and the only program that week to add at least 2.0 ratings points in the demo.

“Big Bang” also had the most growth of the week among total viewers, adding 5.17 million for an L+7 total of 20.93 million.

Meanwhile, with most shows back in first run during the week ended Jan. 17, NBC’s new Jennifer Lopez cop drama “Shades of Blue” increased its DVR viewership.

The Jan. 15 episode of “Shades” doubled its rating among 18-49s with seven-day playback factored in, going from a 1.3 to a 2.6 in the demo.

The only other show to double its rating that week did so from a much lower base–CW’s “Reign,” which went from a 0.3 to a 0.6.

We finally get to see Sheldon's mee maw.

Two things I did not like about this episode were the way the actress played mee maw was just off to me. I didn't like her in the role. Not sure if it was the actress or just her portrayal or what but something about it seemed off to me.

Raj's new flame was hot, but didn't like her voice. To rough/gravely.

I thought Sheldon would have a complete meltdown when his precious mee maw and Amy went at it. Poor guy, stuck in the middle.

A little light on belly laughs in this one but I still enjoyed it as a whole.

Funny that they had an actress they pretty much gave Elsa's hairstyle to trash Frozen (I disagree with her completely.)

I also call "foul" as there's no way the boys wouldn't recognize that she had been Zoe Graystone on Caprica.

The actress playing Sheldon's Mee Maw played pretty much that character in the excellent 2013 film Nebraska.

I hope she stays in the show, way hotter IMO...

And talking about hot, what about the upcoming movie from Melissa Rauch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3859304/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Rated "R +"

So, what would it be the "big secret" they are going to reveal this Thursday?

I can only come up with two things:

- Penny's maiden name
- Who's Howard's dad

Episode was ok. One of the better ones of the season, but to me Penny & Leonard are just phoning it in.

I'll keep watching the rest of this season, next season? Dunno.

I thought this one was OK, couple good moments, the rest was just OK.

They are going to be able to have some good story lines with the baby and Sheldon, he is going to have a melt down.
