MY GOD! PILLARS ON TBS HD! Even their own promos are being shown correctly. Could this mean, and I know that I'm going way out on a limb here, that TBS has abandoned stretching? Is this possible?

King of Queens is in HD right now, but have you seen any stretched SD shows with the commercials pillar boxed?

Why can't they just use BLACK bars? What is so hard about that concept? I'd hate to see the kind of animated crap they use during the news on regular programming

And their sister channel TNT is still showing SD 'Charmed' in warp-o-vision.

Stylized pillars are better than black bars.

I had the TBS SD channel on before while watching Yes Dear since it is not shown in HD yet, so I have not seen any SD shows yet.

Depending on how it is done. If it is ESPN style or what I saw on TBS, I'll grudgingly say OK. But if it is done in the style of local news or network news, I say no. I strongly dislike bright bars, especially when paired with dark programming. I like to keep it simple.

So far, the TBS bars appear to be OK. I was watching on a SDTV set, but these bars blended in almost like regular black bars. Plus, I saw a real HD commercial during KoQ. One commercial spot broke from the TBS bars, except the picture looked in proportion and there was 'floating' text on screen(for 4:3 cropping). I think that has to be the first time a proper 16:9 commercial has been shown on TBS.

Unfortunately, TNT is still doing the same thing.

I don't mind the bars used on newscasts either.

I noticed it also. Ironically, the puppy commercial was 16:9 HD and was squished to 4:3 with pillars. I also prefer plain black, but the less distracting, the better. TBS' isn't bad.

I still find it hard to believe that they will no longer stretch 4:3 programming, since they've been so clueless about presentation up to this point. Plus all of their SD programming is still labeled as HD in the guide. Maybe they just haven't updated the info yet.

The cynic in me thinks that they've just decided to pillar box SD commercials during HD programming. I know that makes absolutely no logical sense - but that's precisely why it is a real possibility.

I'm not a usual TBS viewer. The only sighting of a stretched channel using HD commercials is FOOD HD. Even though commercials/SD programming is stretched, some commercials are true 16:9.

TNT better follow soon. It's embarrassing that they are still distorting programming. I hope other stretch offenders will follow TBS' lead. Since TBS/TNT seem to be thought of as the 'big' networks' and everyone copies them, maybe others will keep copying.

I've seen HD commercials on TNT and A&E, both of which are stretched.

"Friends" is SDTV at 6:30.
"Family Guy" is SDTV from 8-10.

Who would've thought we would be anticipating SDTV shows on a Turner HD network!

Yeah I was having some hope that TNT would not be stretched then when I switched I saw the infinity reruns of Charmed and sure enough it was stretched. Wonder why they would change one and not the other as well.

CV needs to add H2 HD

Give them time. I really can't see them doing it on only one channel.

Crap !

Figured as much.

Guess some genius figured it was important not to stretch commercials since it looks like garbage. That's the difference between having to please someone (advertisers) that can spend their money elsewhere, versus someone that has no option but to keep writing you their check.

Nutrisystem probably wasn't thrilled that their spokespeople were getting fat again.

Commercials are still being presented correctly, however. How strange. I guess the advertisers got pissed at having their spots distorted.

If advertisers had half a brain, they'd realize that there's not much point in having their commercials not look like crap - if the programming that they're slotted in looks like crap and people aren't tuning in.

And now, to really confuse us, AMC has decided to air a non-HD movie, The Godfather, in 4:3. Never seen that before, for any non-HD.

'Better Living Through Modern, Expensive, Electronic Devices'

I saw a 4:3 commercial on Food Network last night that was not functified. It wasn't a D* commercial, it was a Windex commercial. It really caught me off guard. But then all others were functified. So I guess it might've been an extra special commercial insert?

I updated the first post with the info about TBS. Have there been any other instances of AMC not distorting SD material?

I still hope the idiots at FN start using a 16:9 SD version of Ace of Cakes for the HD channel. I too wonder if they actually watch their HD channel since their stretch-o-vision is terrible. Even the Promos are in stretch-o-vision. When they do show HD then it's great.

I've seen those on TBS and TNT. The only OAR commercials on TNT are the ones inserted by TWC. But then even TWC started stretching their commercials!! Then they started showing them OAR again.

I couldn't believe that one. I was watching it on the SD channel, saw it was letterbox. I go to FOOD HD, expecting HD or 16:9. Nope. Stretched with skinny bars at the top and bottom. So it looks like that stretching not only makes a funhouse mirror, it crops some of the top and bottom of the picture too. Or it's mangled in some other way by stretching.

Trying to. With the amount of HD channels D* is spitting out the updating has gone a little dry. Of course other providers are launching new HD channels and those need to be included in the list.

It's important for people to report new channels that aren't on the list, whether they distort or not. Recognizing the channels that do it right is almost as important as bashing the ones that don't.
