I love to watch HD hockey, and I have a light controlled bat cave. If you are a hockey fan, you will of course know that about 80% or more of what fills your screen is white. The ice of course, and also one team is wearing white uniforms. I have a Panny AX-100U, and I find to get the sparking white ice I am using Normal Lamp Mode and Dynamic theatre mode: essentially, full torch mode, the max lumens I can get out of this thing. The game looks great, and the whites are gleaming. I cannot use this setting for any other tv or movie watching, the colors are bad and the blacks are washed out. But with hockey, there are no colors or blacks really, or very little.

Anyone else of the same opinion?

...and could CBC-HD show a Habs game now and then? All I get is Leafs!

I have the Center Ice package but it is all SD, actually the worst SD of all 500+ channels to boot. Thank god for cbc and tsn HD.

Note:
This seems to be dependant on your cable provider, as other posters below mention that their Center Ice package contains some games in HD.

I'm a big hockey fan; in fact Hockey is my number one priority as far as programming is concerned. I just switched to D* and got five different games in HD this past Thursday. The games looked great but each channel needed to be adjusted (even slightly between the two feeds of the same game) this never happens for any other sport. I think it's because of the white and the contrast it creates. Some games look better in Dynamic mode others are better in Standard mode on my 1080p LCD JVC. HD is better than SD for contrast but I still think they should tint the ice blue to take the bite out of broadcast and to help match all the cameras. BTW the SD games on D* look much better than the SD games on TWC.

I can talk more about this later but I've got to get ready to go see the Kings live in a few hours.

I bought my HD setup for movies and fell in love with sports all over again instead, hockey in particular is amazing, it is like a live experience. After playing around, I am going to use the torch mode when friends are watching, as they love the bright light and powerful whites. As we all know, you want that positive feedback when friends are over in your home theatre!

Yeah, I'm glad this wasn't a racial thing.

Hey, the Pens have Georges Laraque, the Craps have Donald Brashear, and, and, ummmm.... the Isles have Satan.

FYI, the ice should not be white white. It should be a grayish white.

Maybe not white like a sheet of printer paper, but good ice is fairly white. Anyway, semantics. Regardless, the bright white goes over well with the guests, always an important factor!

I watch all the Habs games on RDS HD. Much better PQ than Leafs games.

BTW, all the games from the ACC in Toronto looked washed out (or more like widescreen SD) regardless of the broadcaster. Must be something to do with the lighting and/or color that ice is painted.

Oddly enough, I don't get RDS HD, just the SD feed. I didn't even know there was one. CBC, TSN, and Sportsnet are the only Canadian sports HD feeds I can get.

last nights NYR vs Pitt would have been a good game to compare
NYR road sweaters are white and the ice is definatley grayish

There are a lot of variables in terms of lighting/cameras in arenas that affect ice color.

True. If you saw it on a video scope, it should actually measure at around 90% video level.

I hadn't thought about it until I saw this post, and change my settings to vivid mode watching the Det./Columbus game. To me, the vivid mode is as close to being there in person as you can get.

Speaking of the "being there in person" experience, did anyone catch the Kings/Ducks game last week in the "rinkside view" presentation in HD?
Every camera was from the top of the glass or below, without any commentators or commercials (they did a tour of the arena & production during the tv timeouts).
It really simulated the feeling of being at a live game.

Um, "some" is a bit less than "all".

from the NHL Center Ice website : "Did you see over 1,100 NHL games last season? Our NHL CENTER ICE subscribers did. That's over 40 fast, powerful and aggressive games each week, including some available in high definition! Plus, select games from the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs." (red emphasis their's).

Perhaps if "some" were defined, I could make a more informed decision.

Some is defined every month or so:
http://www.indemand.com/sports/nhl/s...ScheduleHD.pdf

What games you will get depends on provider and local. Here, Comcast Philadelphia does not have GameHD.

The addition of a CBC-HD HNIC game is huge.

Thanks for the link. I don't imagine my Comcast has something your's doesn't, so I guess I'm out of luck.

I only watch the Pens, which has been a real disappointment this year, but most of the games I've watched have been in HD. They've had some games on HDNet and NHLHD, too.

I think the number of games offered each night varies, so it's probably hard to define.

Sorry, good point. The games I get via my cable provider (Rogers) here in Eastern Canada are never in HD. I believe this is not the case with many other providers, as seen by the subsequent posts.

Good point. I am sure if I watched the game in Cinema or even Normal, the white would be more "Accurate". But d@mn, for hockey, I like to pump it up on Vivid. At last I found a use for this setting, I hate it for anything else.

NHL on HDNet next 60 days-

and because HDNet doesn't have a 'lodef' audience to worry about,

the cameramen, directors, producers, can frame the shots for 16X9 widescreen...

they don't have to worry about 'center cut' protecting the 'shots' for the 4X3 lodef audience.

It was presented by FSN west (probably the Kings regular broadcaster, since the game was in Anaheim and it seemed like the host was on a roadtrip).
