Was watching House of Lies Sunday and I hope this was just a joke. During a part of the show, there was a snipe basically in the middle of the screen against a black background that said House of Lies "time" and stayed up there for quite a few seconds. I was like are you kidding me and my wife goes "who does that?"

My favorite, this week, was weather related. There was a Winter Weather Warning for just about the whole state. Definitely as far as any Detroit television signal goes. Nonetheless, a couple of affiliates insisted on eating up a corner of the picture - in the 3X5 safe area no less - to display a map of the affected counties. Couldn't ya just say, "Winter Storm Warning..alla y'all."

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.

I noticed that too! I don't think I've ever seen that on House of Lies. Very odd to place it in the middle of the screen as well.

You mean this thing?

That sort of junk is the reason I quit Sho five years ago and it seems nothing really changes. Really though that is such idiotic placement it has to be an error. It looks like it should appear in the corner, but I wouldn't put it past them to be that inconsiderate.

Watch the language, guys. This is an all-ages, races and religions board. And I hear from all factions when someone circumvents the filters by using special characters. The filters are in place for a reason. Do not try to go around them because you feel you have a need to swear. If you quote a post with offensive language in it, edit it out or you're just as likely to get an infraction. Ordinarily, we frown on editing a quote, but for this we'll make an exception wink.gif

There I was, watching the team figure skating competition at the Winter Olympics, one of the individual performances, and suddenly NBCSN put up an animated advertising for a later event, blocking the view of the feet of the performers! And guess where I was looking to see how the performer's skates hit the ice? Right at an event that didn't interest me. Grrr.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Blu-ray players (Sony BDP-S3100, old LG BD390), Roku (the original model: N1000), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (25Mbps/5Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Starter Package), DVD/VHS player.

I set my DVR to record both the Chi/Wash and Tor/Bkn games last night on ESPN2 and ESPN. I watched the first half of the Tor/Bkn game, and at halftime switched to the beginning of the Chi/Wash game. I was intending to watch the first half of that game and return to the Tor/Bkn game when it got to halftime, and once that was over finish up the Chi/Wash game, which I did. However, to start the second half of the Tor/Bkn game, for some unknown reason ESPN decided the scroll at the bottom of the screen wasn't enough, so they added the Chi/Wash score in a rectangle in upper right-hand of the screen. It was easy enough for me to avoid the scrolling score, but adding an additional scoreboard made it impossible to ignore. Later when I flipped to my ESPN2 recording, they had the additional scoreboard for the Tor/Bkn game as well. It totally screwed up the suspense for both games. What are these people thinking? Putting aside my plans on how I was going to watch these games, why is there a need to show two scores simultaneously? I'd really like to sit across from the decision makers and listen to their logic for this kind of practice. What kind focus group are they using that says they want more screen space taken up by adding and additional scoreboard to the already existing one at the bottom of the screen? Is there no end to this madness? I know, there isn't, and it's only going to get worse.

I cannot watch anything on NBC Sports which has the bottom line. They actually squash the picture, distorting the aspect ratio to make room for it! Thankfully, so far they have left it off of their Formula 1 coverage.

Sorry for a lack of screen shot but I was watching CBS This Morning and not only did they have the rather unobtrusive opaque CBS eye in the lower right corner(4:3 safe area ) but in the lower right they had a largish box that said CBS This Morning and to the left of that the worst thing was another box with a moving picture of some nature scene in a 15 second loop  My god, the eye(which I could live with) then the constant bug telling me what the hell I'm watching the whole time and worst the PIP box thing with a moving picture in it. Totally ruined what I was trying to watch, Aaron Neville singing! Thanks a lot CBS (_x_)

New horror will no doubt lead to more mess on screen during NFL games:

RFID tags on Players and Refs (yes, the refs too).

I'm sure the players union will not let that go on for the regular season. If they can track the players speed and routes so precisely the coaches will 100% know when they're doggin it and taking play's off.

You might be confusing the NFL players union with the MLB players union. The NFL union is a joke. The owners pretty much get everything they want. The MLB owners pretty much get nothing they want.

I was at brother's house. They recently switched from Dish to Directv. It was on a Starz channel (because they get the premium channels free for 3 months) and there was a pop up graphic advertising Outlander during the movie. So yeah, man can't pay for the purpose of having an advertisement free viewing experience anymore and actually get it! Premium channels still have no shame in degrading their premium service. Sad...sad...sad.

Anybody else think part of the motivation behind all this screen clutter has to do w/ the proliferation of DVR's and content providers wanting to keep you from being able to archive a clean copy of something, so you'll be more likely to buy BR/DVD of the movie/show?

It has nothing to do with archival. They want to be able to show you advertising even when you use your DVR to skip the commercial interruptions. Encouraging you to purchase home video releases is at most a secondary concern, if it's even a concern at all with the rapid decline in physical media sales.

In my market the locals are unusually persistent and obnoxious with their weather warnings. Here is an example from tonight's Panthers Pre-Season game. Not only do we have the game graphics, but the station logo (4:3 safe of course throughout the ENTIRE game) and a massive scrolling weather notification...
