It's funny you say that because the Hollywood round is consistently the lowest rated part of AI. People want to see auditions or the call-in competition. I think in year's past they had Hollywood drag on for two weeks but they cut it down to one a few seasons ago in response to low ratings.

The problem with the Hollywood portion, IMHO, is that they don't show enough singing. It's too much about drama between contestants (Who didn't stay up all night practicing? Who didn't learn their song? Who goofed off?) and about how who is on/off rather than us seeing these people sing.

Oddly that's the part of AI that's most like a traditional reality show. People getting into fights, talking behind each others' backs, emotional breakdowns, threats are made, warrants are served, past crimes are revealed by the press and so on.

The thing I don't like about it is... who are half of these people? Most of the people who didn't get camera time during the auditions get knocked out in Hollywood so it seems like a waste of time.

NOW: my post on AVS Forum.
NEXT: someone else's post on AVS Forum.

It is ironic, but I wish they would make the Hollywood section the most. We get to see how people work together, and how professional they are. The danger with the Hollywood section is it increases the burnout factor for the singers. You can see it as the competition goes on the public usually gets tired of the front runners.

This is true, and don't forget the other effect. Many times you have someone make to the final 32 (or whatever) and we've never seen them sing (and possibly never seen them except for the 'elevator ride'). Even if they are good, it's tough for such people to make it to the finals because people already have their favorites based on who is shown to them, so if someone isn't shown but makes to the first live broadcast, they could be toast soon. I'm not a fan of that.

Anyone else getting tired of the dearth of backup singers trying out (a la Melinda Doolittle)? My beef with that is that backup singers are already in the industry, they have a better shot to get a door open for them. AI should be for the complete unknowns, the people who have no professional singing background but have lived on a farm all their life, or were a waitress prior to this, or something.

It hasn't been that way for years. Most of, if not all of the finalists have had some sort of formal music training, if not being active in a band for many years perfecting their art.

There are more than one actually, the girl in red pictured above is Kristy Lee Cook who had a deal with BMI and Spears record company. Doing a google search on her name provides all the information you need on her.

Another who we have yet to see, but is apparently one of the top 50 is Carly Hennessey, who had not only a record, but one with a promotional budget of $2.2 million that ended up selling a whopping 378 copies.

Here is a link to a NY Post article on Carly http://www.nypost.com/seven/01182008...er__964144.htm

There are going to be quite a few people in the top 50 with professional music experience. Enough to make the whole thing a bit boring past the audition phase.

I don't know - I still get enjoyment watching professionals crash and burn. There's only one winner and 49 losers.

Also, from what I've read it's going to be different this year, allowing those who can play an instrument show off their talent in the early rounds.

Really? That's awesome, just like Nashville Star and Canadian Idol.

This is quite possibly the funniest audition ever on AI - at least as far as I can remember. I crack up everytime I see it, and Randy and Paula just make matters worse (or shall I say, more funny!?)

The audition of the good looking, but weird, black guy and that of the stalker guy reminded me of why I think the audition rounds are the best thing about AI. By the time they get toward the end, most of the successful contestants have proved themselves to be truly talented but the unconsciously funny auditions by untalented people who fail and their even funnier post-audition rants are the main reasons I watch.

If the record company gave her a $2.2 million dollar promotional budget, that means she owes the record company a lot of money. All that cash is paid by the artist's "advance sales" which she had none of. The record business puts the financial burden of everything on the artists.

I was in Sports Authority yesterday and I saw an Ali Lohan (Lindsay's younger sister) Christmas CD on sale. Don't ask me why (it's in Sports Authority or why she has a CD out)!!!

People have CDs published(?) all the time. Doesn't mean they are talented or successful.

Stupid fan guy. I told my wife, he is so eccentric he is probably unemployed. I can't imagine that guy holding down a "normal" job.

Sorry, he was just too "out-there" for me.

Had a few really good voices last night, including the 16 year old kid who had partial vocal chord paralysis. He seemed like he had to sorta strain to talk, but he could really sing well. I also really liked the sisters that came in (well, the one who sang), she did really good and even though she missed one note, she is really good.

They seem to be a little more lenient this year. Seems like they're letting anybody that can actually sing through to Hollywood. In years past, they would be more critical about other things (their appearance, or personality, or marketability, etc).

Of course, I'm basing that comment on what they're actually SHOWING us. They might just be not showing the ones that are getting screened out for the above reasons.
