American Idol 7 Kicks Off With A Few Changes

Hollywood (eCanadaNow) - American Idol, Season 7 is about to kick off on Fox, but this year will be a bit different as a varied approach is going to be used. Fox has stated that it will focus more on the lives of the contestants.

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe stated that Fox is going to focus more on the contestants and their lives than it did last season.

American Idol will still be all about the singing, and the voting, then more singing, and more voting, you get the idea. That basic formula is not going to change. What is going to change though is the way in which the show is produced as Fox apparently wants fans to be able to become more in-tune with the contestants, and know how they are off of the stage and in their lives.

A couple of notables you will be seeing in American Idol, Season 7 include John Sligh, the younger brother of Chris from season six of American Idol. You will also see a lot of familiar faces in the audition rounds.

Another change is that there will be no more group numbers once they move out to Hollywood. Contestants are also now going to be allowed to play an instrument to accompany their singing onstage in Hollywood.

One thing the executive producer did state, is that their will not be another Sanjaya problem, as he stated that the top 12 will be too talented for that issue to come up.

You don't deserve our help. You, sir, are part of the problem.

Believe it or not, I had successfully resisted succumbing to American Idol addiction, until last season when, for the first time, I let my daughter talk me into watching it. That was a BIG mistake because, heaven help me, I'm hooked!

In my own defense, I suppose I should explain that I recorded all of last season's episodes, which allowed me to fast forward through Sanjaya's more egregious performances and some of the other dreck, too. Still, shame on me.

I hate, hate, hate the reality TV genre but AI isn't that, exactly. Instead it's an admixture of delusional but weirdly funny contestants who can't sing a lick and remarkably talented young performers who can REALLY sing. I also (usually) enjoy Simon Cowell's eye-wateringly snarky comments to the contestants. In fact his, I didn't hate it, crack has become a part of my vocabulary.

I cannot resist the train wrecks that show up to audition in these early weeks. My wife watches the show and I get sucked in each year. Love those Simon Cowell remarks.

AI must be recorded. It is too painful to sit through the 59 minutes of commercials each hour otherwise.

There's no reason for the bad people to advance past the screeners to appear before Simon/Randy/Paula other than staged shocked value, and surely lots of people "act bad" just to have their 15 minutes, but it's hard to look away sometimes.

So, did anyone notice this seasons first 'plant'? The girl in the red dress with the crazy gyrations...her left earing was off...then on...then off...then on...while she was singing and talking with the judges...

I don't mind plants (too much) to make the show more 'enjoyable' for others out there...but at least catch your silly continuity errors before you air it...or at least just let them do one take...

The girl that sang "Amazing Grace" that kickboxes is by far the most attractive girl (w/ talent) that I've seen on AI...wow...

The crazy glitter girl has a lot of talent...in improv and art...some of the work they showed of her was actually pretty good..

For those that enjoy such things....

It was mentioned last year in the AI thread to check out Linda Sharp's "Don't Get Me Started" blog/review of AI. Just google her and the title to get a link. I'm blocked at work so I can't post.

She usually had her "reviews" of the previous nights show done by early morning EST.

Nor sure whether she will continue this year or not. Seems she swears she won't every year...But we all know how THAT goes.

Dry and witty musings.

Can anyone post some screen shots of that smoking hot blonde that kick boxes, lives in a log cabin? WOW, one of the most beautiful individuals I have ever seen on TV. Very impressed.

I really hate the first few weeks of Idols because of the goofy, sometimes staged performances. We saw a few decent singers, and several jokes.

However, the dude that sang the Stalker song to Paula made me cry I laughed so hard.

"If you were a bath tub, I would culk her" "If I was Columbo, I would Peter Fulker" That made me laugh.

I've been saying it for 3 years, but have always fallen....I'm going to wait and watch them AFTER the Hollywood Auditions are over. Everything up to that point is pointless to me. The goofiness was ok the first couple years, but I'm kind of over that now.

tonybradley - you know what's even scarier about that stalker guy...he actually had a decent voice...but I swear I've seen him before in something else...I think he was a plant...it was too 'civil' in that room for it to be a real random person. If someone started singing that way to a friend of mine and we had no idea who that was...something far different would've gone down...

Oh, I agree 100% it was a plant. If not, Paula would have been freaking out, not laughing. Paula cries and freaks out over everything anyway. I believe most of the crazies are plants. Also, they would have taken him out immediately when he said he broke into her house...yadda yadda. Maybe not all of them are plants, but most of them.

And yes, his voice wasn't bad at all.

Last night's episode of AI didn't have many high points but that's all right because it seldom does -- thank God for TiVo! I thought the good looking black guy with the weird expression who couldn't sing a lick was really funny. I was already laughing hysterically when they showed a shot of Paula and Randy with their faces covered to hide their own hysterical laughter. Good stuff!

The tall blonde girl with the glitter makeup and the New York accent was a hoot, too. It's a shame that her singing wasn't as good as her rants and finger gestures, which she demonstrated after she was rejected. I though that Simon had it right when he said that she looked like Christopher Walken. Heck, she SOUNDED like Christopher Walken, too.

I agree that the tall, startlingly beautiful girl who sang Amazing Grace was the class act of the night. I'll be surprised if she doesn't go a long way.

Plant or not. To get that far, the guy has been checked out. And there is security in the room. Plus, if you couldn't get that the guy was not dangerous... It was a joke. The guy was funny. Paula got it.

Last season we got to see the large men bounce a loony out into the hall after he came at Paula with what he said was a hair product but just as well could have been Anthrax. Even the people who have been checked out could flip at any moment.

If you want to take the early weeks seriously, they do show how difficult it is to stand in front of three people and sing a song a cappella. There are so many ways to do it wrong, I'm amazed anyone can do it. And when someone does it well, it's incredible.

NOW: my post on AVS Forum.

The return of Fox's American Idol was down in the key 18-49 demo from its 2007 debut, scoring a 13.8/32 in its two-hour premiere versus a 15.7/36 in its two-hour premiere Jan. 17, 2007, according to Nielsen Media Research overnight numbers. But the show still demolished the other networks and built audience throughout the night.

Idol still had plenty of power to crush the competition. Fox beat all of the other networks combined in primetime, with ABC/CBS/NBC/The CW avereraging an 8.5/19 on the night.

And Idol grew every half-hour, from an 11.7/30 from 8 p.m.-8:30 p.m. to a 15.3/34 from 9:30 p.m.-10 p.m.

You're right! I remembered the wrong weird looking actor. I think I confused Walken with Dafoe (it's Willem, not William) because the blonde with the New York accent really did sound like Walken to me but, in retrospect, not so much like Dafoe. In any event, I am sure we can agree that the girl was really, really weird!

She seemed like she had some mental issues. But, you'll probably disagree, but I actually thought she started off singing that song really well. Sounded like the original singer to me. Not right for AI, but I agreed with the "She should be a in a '60s Cover Band". Based on her voice, not her mental stability.
