I'm trying to get connected to Comcast. Their website asks for my SSN and the person I've dealt with wanted my driver's license and DOB. I'm really not down for giving any of this information. In the age of identity theft, I really don't give any of that out unless there's an absolute need. Is there an easy way to avoid this?

Do you have a phone? Call them and ask for a rep, go to a local Comcast facility or have someone come to your home for subscription.

No need to provide SSN or DL info. All they should need is a billing address.

Technically, in Illinois at least, your Driver's License is the property of the State and is not yours to give out anyway. Obviously, this is a much ignored situation.

Sturgeon's Law: "Nothing is always absolutely so."
Sturgeons Revelation: "Ninety percent of everything is crud."
My Thoughts: "A reasoned argument must share some basic common points."

Unfortunately they are in the same boat and want this information for a credit check. It used to not be this way, but with the economy the way it is they need to be sure you can pay your bill. Granted I haven't had to sign up for years, but I'm willing to bet they'll want a credit check regardless of how you sign up.

Bleh... you don't need SSN or DL for a credit check. Name and billing address is sufficient.

It's simple for them... if you don't pay the bill, they disconnect service.

Just an FYI, I work for a cable company, and ALL employees have to go through a background check before hiring, so for companies in America at least, your information is safe. Not sure how that works for Comcast though, as they outsource a LOT of their call centers to India.

Being an employee and being a consumer/subscriber is totally different.
No need for them to have a SSN. No matter how "safe" they think their security may be.

May I suggest to cover your head with foil so that "they" can't read your mind and mess with you...

6 TV's in the house on FiOS and we only pay $4.99/month to connect them all!!! Power to the CableCard and WMC7!!!

Does that work for you?

In my experience with Comcast and Verizon, they never asked for that info to become a subscriber. But then again... I didn't have my aluminum beer can hat on, so maybe they did get identification without my knowledge.
