Hi all,

I have Comcast digital cable in southern New Jersey. I've been experiencing some problems with the cable -- hardly at all this winter but it it happened a lot during summer months. At some points, my service suddenly stops and repeats itself for a few seconds. For instance, if I'm watching a program where someone is talking and let's say they happen to say the word "THE," the picture freezes and "the" constantly gets repeated for about 5 seconds. On some days it happened quite a bit, other days not at all but it became very annoying. Is this a problem with the cable coming into my house or could it be a cable box issue? My box is Scientific Atlanta 4250 HD. Thanks for any suggestions.

Might be on their end. Not much you can do about it if that's the case.

You can swap the box and see if that helps, but I think something is getting hung up before it enters your house.

Don't believe everything on the Interwebz! A duck's quack DOES echo!

Just a quick update. I removed the splitter in my family room and am now running the cable straight into my cable box and then to the TV. I don't know if it was due to a faulty splitter or not, but so far no problems. Also, I may be imagining it, but I swear the picture quality looks a little better. Perhaps a bit sharper and better defined once I got rid of the splitter.

It is your imagination. Digital cable is either ON or OFF. Typically you'll get a scrambled screen (pixilazation) if you have a week signal going into your cable box. If the picture is already there, and you increase the signal, the picture itself doesn't change, your signal levels just change. You can enter the diagnostics screen of your 4250 and check the stats on page 1 and see the difference when you add the splitter vs. no splitter. To enter the diagnostic screen, press the bullseye on the front of the box for apprx 5 seconds, you will see a "mail" light start flashing on the display, then press info button and you will see the diagnostic screen pop up. use page up/down on remote to scroll through.

You mentioned removing a splitter, do you have a cable modem in your home or just TV's?
