I have an approximately 4 year old Motorola HDTV DVD through Comcast. I think the HDD is getting a little shaky (and pretty full) and wanted to upgrade to a new, larger box, but not lose all my old recordings. Comcast says there is no way to do this, and from what I've read, you can add storage to an existing box via an external drive, but that drive cannot be used for any box other that the box it was formatted for, i.e., not for moving content from one box to another. Is there a workaround for this? I have a whole bunch of shows I don't want to lose if I have to switch boxes.
Thanks!

Comcast is right. You can't move it on to a new DVR.

The only way to get them off is to use a DVD recorder (preferably with a hard drive) or a computer with a video capture card. Both would have to record in real time, no instant or high speed transfer.

A TiVo would allow you to transfer the recordings to a computer at high speed.

Don't believe everything on the Interwebz! A duck's quack DOES echo!
