I need to figure out how to get a signal from a VGA source (PC) via a DVI-D cable to an M1 source (Projector).

The reason for this is I want to run a DVI cable through the wall to allow for either a HDMI, DVI, or VGA input. I was hoping to be able to accomplish this through the use of adapters. Currently as it is the HDMI signal will go through, but not the VGA. I wasn't aware of how many different kinds of DVI connections existed until recently, so I've identified the cable in the wall as a DVI-D. I could replace it with a different kind of DVI cable if I need one that will do analog as well as video but right now I'm kind of on information overload and am having a hard time figuring out exactly what I need.

or... would it just be easier to go M1 to HDMI and then from HDMI go to VGA or DVI as needed?

If so, I could then just run HDMI through the wall and have the appropriate HDMI to DVI or HDMI to VGA cables for the input.

Can't do it. VGA is analog. A DVI-D cable is purely digital.

You need a DVI-A (analog) or DVI-I (analog & digital) cable.

Call monoprice.com and ask them for advice as to which cable to use.

cavu,

thanks. That's the conclusion I was getting at as well... so the question now is: can I go M1 to DVI-I to VGA?
any idea why all the DVI-I cables on monoprice are only male-male?

I'm starting to like the idea of just using HDMI in the wall more and more, though.

Certainly, with the right adapters.

All regular cables are male-to-male. A female to male is considered an 'extension' cable.

In fact, you are probably better off to run an M1-DA extension cable from end to end as it will have all the necessary conductors included.

blackbox.com sells them for ~$25 for a 25ft. You may have to phone them for the M1-DA male->female version.
