I am in the planning stages of a new home build.

I built a HTPC and it will be located in the HT. It is not on 24/7. It will be powered up/down as needed.

I will have several repeaters/mini-HTPC's located in other rooms throughout the home. These device will be used to to access the HTPC located in the HT since it will have all the media.

I have the iMON remote for the main HTPC and can use it to power up/down the HTPC. I assume I could use learning remotes in the other rooms to remotely power up/down the main HTPC so the local extender/mini-HTPC can access the main HTPC to get to the media.

Would I use some sort of IR blaster which uses RF to send the signals to the other blaster ? The home will be ~ 4300sqft (2 story plus a basement located HTPC).

Thanks for any advice suggestions!
Rob

Not exactly what you asked, but have you considered Network Attached Storage instead?

Yes I have, but that would have to be left on 24/7.

They can go to sleep and power up when disks gets accessed. Sure, you'll have to wait a bit when you want to start watching a movie if the NAS is in sleep mode, but it isn't much of an issue.

And, frankly, you might even end up using less power even if not enabling sleep mode, compared to powering up an entire HTPC just to access its disks.

So it is sounding as if a NAS would be the most efficient/easiest method ?

Got any recommendations which will work with four 3TB drives?

Thanks.

EDIT:
WHat about the "Wake on LAN" setting in BIOS? Could that be used in a way to power the HTPC on & off from a remote extender?

Easy to script a WOL command for the remote systems to wake up the server. For the extenders you'll need an IR distribution system to send a wake up signal to the server that is linked to the software you're running on it to wake up.

I'm not sure if it'll be the most efficient method, that depends on a lot of different parameters.

I myself have got a Synology NAS and am very happy with it.

WOW!

Those NASes are pricey for a decent one!

What I would prefer to do is be able to utilize my JBOD tower box I already have.
It is the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817576009 from MediaSonic. (Awesome box BTW).

If I could simply find a router which had a USB3.0 port that I could plug this box into, that would be ideal, yes?
