I want to install some simple outdoor speakers that my friend gave to me. The house is already prewired for it, but I need to get a volume control. It will be one pair of speakers and they will connect to Zone 2 of my existing receiver. I have seen quite the difference in price and features. Can someone let me know if a cheap volume control will work? Also, what do the higher end ones give me that the cheap ones do not? I don't want to spend the money for a higher end if it is not necessary for just one pair of outdoor speakers.

Some/most volume controls offer impedance matching.

Find a quality manufacturer, quality varies. Low quality will fail sooner than higher quality.

Look for one that is outdoor rated, if it will be outdoors.

Make sure the VC can be used with the speaker wire that you have - check the gauge of the speaker cable, and the VC specs. Some wire may be too large to fit in the VC terminals.

I had no luck with the Monoprice volume controls. They didn't match crap, let alone impedance. I switched to the HTD ones and they seem to be fine so far. I've only had them for a few months though.

Niles, Xantech, and Russound are all well-respected names, but I've never used them.

My Phoenix Gold brand VCs lasted 15 years. Don't know if they're still the same quality, though. I pulled them out and replaced them with Nuvo keypads, and they still worked perfectly.
