I am planning on installing a few zones in my house for audio distribution:

Zone I have now:
Kitchen
Main Bathroom
Basement Office
Basement Game/TV room

Potential other zones:
Backyard Deck
Bedroom
Upstairs Office

I think I would only ever realistically have a max of 6 zones, my house is not that big..

I have looked at HTD units, speakercraft and Sonos.

I like the sonos, but I also like being able to control the audio quickly from the wall without pulling out my phone/tablet. Right now I have conventional volume dials on the wall.

Are there any keypads that can work with a sonos without requiring an expensive controller? (or being $400 like the sonos remote).

Another option I have been thinking about is using a PC with multiple audio cards, but again I am not sure how I could control it using keypads.

Thanks for any suggestions/options

You could look at Casa tunes http://www.casatunes.com/
I have not used it myself.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of them before. It definitely seems to do everything I want, just seems kind of expensive for the sound card (use my own amps) at $750, plus $200/keypad. I wish there was some kind of universal usb keypad I could just plug into a usb hub, and run cat5 to each keypad (and be wall mounted)... At $200/keypad, I might as well mount ipod 4th gens on the wall.

thanks for the info! It definitely does what I want it to.

Casatunes is great! I have used it over 5 years. Their support is excellent. I use it with two Russound units so its a great interface. I have my music sitting on a WHS machine and Casa runs on that also. I use my ipad android devices to control the music.

Maybe look into installing a russound unit and using Casatunes as the interface.

AirPlay (part of iTunes) might work if you don't need streaming services like pandora and if iTunes supports your audio formats. Granted, there are not dedicated wall panels but, as you said, you could always use iPod touches, if you want.

You can stream such services via airplay, on a computer (PC or Mac) it's possible by using Airfoil and on iOS devices it's natively doable.

Sonos and mount an Ipad or two or three in the wall in your home

Google ipad wall mount this will bring back quite a few options
