I have just set up my 2nd zone and out of 5 sonos components 3 of them have been defects.

Both defects were the Connect
The S5 was good out of the box but its only a week old

The first connect bought in January was bad out of the box
The second connect worked for 2 months then began to drop numerous times a day I would have to unplug it to restart. As it got worse and worse initially it was once a week or so so i attributed it to the nework and lately it was like every hour so I contacted support and they confirmed that it had to be returned.
The third connect would not find my network so that went back as well

So three out of four Connects have been returned

Am I just that unlucky or is this a problem with Sonos and the Connect specifically?

Bad luck. I've installed hundreds of sonos devices and the only bad piece i had was a zone bridge that was bringing down the entire network after being installed for a week.

I'd find out what router and WAP that Sonos recommends, or find out what others have used with good success, at the Sonos forums.

Just to clarify the 3 problems were all different

Connect 1-Ethernet port was bad out of the box
Connect 2-Must have shorted out as it worked for 2 months then just began dropping connection. Support had me do the "mute test" and unit was unresponsive so they said it needed to be returned
Connect 3-This would not complete installation when i attempted to set it up

Connect 4- Hooked up and is working fine for 2 days now hopefully this is the last one.

Connect 1/2 were of the same batch as i got it at the same time
Connect 3/4 were also of the same batch as I got those at the same time

I think it's bad luck too. I haven't had a bad Sonos product yet. They do run hot and depending on your setup, I could see one maybe 2 products failing because of heat. As far as connections go, there are so many variables involved that it's too hard to diagnose well.

Sonos margins for us dealers are very slim already. There isn't a lot of money made selling their products, it's about installation and properly designing a system for the customer's needs.
