Hi, I've searched several threads, but can't see to find the right answer to my questions.

We bought our home new 7 years ago and the screen porch and family were pre-wired, but they didn't leave a diagram like they did in our old house in Seattle. The wiring includes 2 cat5 runs and 4 speakers and 2 speaker wire runs to the screen porch.

Anyway, I bought some Def Tech AW5500's for my screen porch and hooked up the wires to the receiver. I decided to test out the connections before hanging the speakers, but got no sound.

Here's my connection points as I see them. Can anyone tell me if I need to add something? Do I need a volume control at the door leading to the screen porch? I'm surprised that the connections "end" at the point going out to the screen porch. I thought that a volume control would be optional there and the cables would run directly to the porch.

I'm not worried about putting speakers in the family room as I have a full theater in the basement.

Volume control location in the family room. It looks the same as the screen porch connection:

The volume control is optional - you just need to connect the incoming / outgoing wires together at the volume control location. Simply splice them together and you're done!

WOW. Now that I noticed two sets of single wires, I see that now. Thank you so much!

*Edit* I tried it. It doesn't work. I've verified that the speakers and the receivers do work, but I can't get any sound. This is weird. There are no other dead plates where I think I should make connections. Any other ideas?

Invest in a $10 ohmeter, from HD/Lowes. Test the wires for continuity.

You have 4 conductors/wires in each cable at the VC locations? 4 different colors?

Will do. I do need one of those.

And in the wires I'm trying to connect, there is only two colors, red and black. I just don't get it.

How many wires are in each of the speaker cables at the VC?
