Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a whole-house audio solution where the volume control for each zone can be controlled via an iPhone and/or Android app instead of through a proprietary control panel. I know Crestron and Savant sell systems like that, but I'm a geek and I want to install it myself. Are there any solutions that aren't sold through dealers?

I have no experience with this product but many here suggest HTD as a great seller of quality stuff.

I have had my eye on this:

Kind of like a multizone receiver. Independent volume control for each zone, independent source selection for each zone. I use iRule for my system control now and could easily add this to my system, plug in 6 sources and connect my speakers and be off and running.

Wow, $800 is a lot better than the $4k or so I was looking at for a Crestron. Thanks for the lead.

It wouldn't come with any way to control it remotely though. That would require something like iRule as I mentioned. Whereas I understand the Crestron system to be self contained.

Since you mentioned being a geek, iRule or one of the other IOS/Android control apps should be right up your alley.

HTD does have a separate control device and mobile app to go along with it. Note this just gets you source selection and volume control.

"Driving" the source will be left to some other app... But the HTD, HTDnet app and a Sonos: Connect would be a good solution for a WHA system...

Thanks Jeff. I was planning to just drive the source using my Mac Mini, which gives me music, video, and TV all in one box. Now if someone would just make a mobile remote for Pandora...

Airplay from an iPod/iPad/iPhone to an Airport Express is a cheap way to get Pandora to a WHA system... Control obviously from that device, and battery being the limiting factor.

I prefer to have devices installed permanently in the setup, so I don't have to worry about battery life or making sure the device is connected, etc. I really like the Pandora interface on the Squeezebox Duet, so maybe I'll find one of those used.
