I have a few airport expresses setup to provide multiroom audio (am transitioning from Squeezeboxes) but am unsatisfied with the power draw (30-40 watts vs 4-5 watts). After looking into other options I found that I could get a group of Raspberry Pi B (with 3.5mm out and 2-3 watts consumption) and hook them into my amplifier , one per room. They have 1-2 distro's that should work (Squeeze plug). I was wondering if anyone else has tried a similar setup and how did it work out?
I would've gone with Apple Tv's but they're digital only and I currently have a Niles 1230 that I'll be using. Is there a digital multichannel amp (Toslink) that can be used w/apple tv?

Is there anything I'm missing as to why this isn't a good idea or any good alternatives I'm missing?

Thanks a bunch

Monoprice sells a converter that will take TOSLINK in and output L/R analog audio.

I used one of these for a while before I got a real A/V receiver. Only issue I had with it was that it had a little high freq noise whenever there was no input signal (e.g. when I turned the source (TV) off but not the amp).
